I hadn’t been dancing since a few Fridays ago when I made it out to Brooklyn Swings, but last Thursday I attended the Frim Fram in Manhattan! And I have to say, it was one of the best dances I’ve been to in a while! Dancing there reminded me of how much I miss dancing regularly, even with the craziness that is my life right now! Up on the fourth floor of the building, I wasn’t sure I was in the right place when I arrived as I didn’t hear music, my usual assurance when attending a new location! But it turned out I’d shown up early, during the end of a lesson! There were three rooms with huge dance floors, but for the frim fram, only one was used. It had a great floor and lots of space, although that quickly disappeared as the dancers arrived! It was packed! The music was fantastic, I met some incredible people, and I barely got to sit down! Even though I knew no one in the room, I was asked to dance every single song. I tried sitting and conversing with a lead when I needed a break, but leads came up to ask me to dance even while I was obviously in a conversation (this was interesting.. I have yet to decide whether or not I liked it. It could have flipped to annoying had I not been in such a fantastic mood!) Although the floor was mainly filled with east coast swing, a few leads opted for lindyhop with me, which was fun for me! Interestingly, I didn’t see very much balboa, even on incredibly fast paced songs! I danced one of the fastest lindyhops of my life! I met a blues dancer, and we had a really fun fusion dance, but the scene was definitely a predominantly east coast/lindyhop, there wasn’t much variation. I left the dance exhausted, energetic from the amazing dances and leads I’d had the joy of experiencing, with several new friends, and incredibly dehydrated! It turns out, if you don’t have a breather between dances... You forget to drink water! (Or at least I do!) I’m excited to return to this weekly dance and I’m looking forward to getting to know the regulars!
