Harold's Airbnb in Deming NM
Harold’s Airbnb in Deming NM
It has been a long time since I have posted an update about our adventures. A lot has changed for us since my last installment but I am determined to finish chronicling our journey around the country if only to share the beautiful pictures we have taken.
When I left off, it was December 2017 and we were in Rockhound State Park in Deming New Mexico. Our next stop was just down the road at a very…

Camping at Rockhound State Park- Deming, NM
Camping at Rockhound State Park- Deming, NM
After a lovely 2 week stay at City of Rocks State Park in Faywood, New Mexico, we made our way to nearby Rockhound State Park in Deming. We had been considering heading to Big Bend National Park in Texas ( my favorite!) but the weather report was calling for it be pretty cold there so we nixed that idea. Rockhound was only a short distance away, close to town if we needed wifi or supplies, and…

Home base at City of Rocks State Park- New Mexico
After waking up to a beautiful, sunny morning at our spacious campsite at City of Rocks State Park, we decided to make it our home base for a couple of weeks. Our camp hosts and some fellow campers had persuaded us to purchase an annual pass for the New Mexico State parks which meant our non-electric campsite was free. The pass is $225 for non-residents and allows you to stay in any park for free…

Visiting the Catwalk Recreation Area in Glenwood, NM
Visiting the Catwalk Recreation Area in Glenwood, NM
After a relaxing ( and free!) couple of days at Cosmic Campground, we decided it was time to move on and continue exploring New Mexico. We headed toward the small town of Glenwood and decided to stop and explore the Catwalk Recreation Area. It was pretty cold so I was hesitant to do much walking around. A woman we ran into in the parking lot encouraged us to do the 45 minute round trip hike. She…

A few quiet days at Cosmic Campground
A few quiet days at Cosmic Campground
It was a beautiful morning when we woke up at our private campsite in Box Canyon outside of Gila, New Mexico. The sun was shining and the autumn leaves on the trees were so pretty. If Francis did not have a work deadline we could have happily spent a couple of days there but alas we had no phone or internet signal so we had to move on.
We drove towards Reserve, New Mexico enjoying the scenery…

Why Getting Outdoors Is Good for People in Addiction Recovery
“We are pleased to introduce a guest writer on our blog, Michelle Peterson. Michelle has written a great article about one of the many benefits of spending time in nature. Look forward to more of her articles in the future.” Francis and Kate

A Year on the Road!
A Year on the Road!
Today marks the one year anniversary of our epic road trip across the United States. We gave up our apartment in Durham, NC, put our stuff in storage, and on June 3rd, 2017, we hit the road in our 2004 Jeep Liberty. The plan was to travel for a year, explore the country and find a new place to call home. It is hard to believe the year is up already. It has been an incredible adventure! We…

It was time to move on from our lovely three days stay at an Airbnb in Gila, New Mexico. We took our time saying goodbye to our hostess Joanne, She talked with Francis about her impressions of the first chapter of his book and gave us more ideas for places to visit in New Mexico. Her Airbnb is definitely on our list for a return visit.
Our first stop was at the library in Gila to find out about…

Blissful stay in Gila, New Mexico
Blissful stay in Gila, New Mexico
We enjoyed the couple of weeks we spent in Arizona but it was time to move on to New Mexico. We both have a particular fondness for New Mexico for a variety of reasons and were looking forward to revisiting some favorite places and exploring new ones.
We took our time packing up our campsite at Schoolhouse campground on Roosevelt Lake. We had a reservation at an Airbnb in Gila but check-in was…

Taking the Apache Trail Scenic Drive to Mesa, Arizona
Taking the Apache Trail Scenic Drive to Mesa, Arizona
After a couple of days spent mostly working at our lovely campsite at Schoolhouse Campground on Roosevelt Lake, we decided to take a drive into Mesa, Arizona to run some errands. We needed groceries and a couple of new tires for the Jeep. Several people had told us about Apache Trail Scenic Drive although not everyone recommended it. It was alternately described as a must do scenic drive or an…

Schoolhouse Campground, Roosevelt Lake, Arizona
We woke up to a beautiful view of the sun sparkling and ducks swimming on Apache Lake from our campsite at Burnt Corral Campground. If we had phone and internet service, we would have been happy to make it our home for a few more days. Unfortunately, because we are working on this trip and not just vacationing, we can’t be off the grid for long. We took lots of pictures and enjoyed coffee and…
