The Sea And Me
I’ve been out at sea for 15 years now, and honestly, it’s all I do. Wait for the tide to rise high enough to get my boat out of the Scottish harbour, then travel five miles into the North Sea (one of the most treacherous seas in the world) before I drop anchor and grab about three hours of sleep.
Of course, I always check the weather before heading out. But, no matter how careful I am, the weather can change without warning. I sometimes wish I didn’t need to sleep, but everyone knows that’s impossible. It’s especially dangerous when you’re asleep, not just because the weather can turn suddenly, but because fishing trawlers have this annoying habit of catching fire. There's a mountain of electrical cabling mixed with a fuel tank full of 2000 litres of diesel, plus other hazards I won’t bore you with. So yeah, it's one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. One wrong step and it's game over.
Fishing trawler on fire not long ago, near me.
And yet, I wouldn’t change it for the world. Because, sometimes, the sea is simply magnificent. It has an energy about it that fills the loneliness many people experience. There’s something magical about being out there on the water, in the middle of the night, with the entire universe above you, full of stars. It makes me feel alive, contented, and in awe of the vast ocean beneath me.
And then there’s the sunset. That glowing orange light across the water, like an enormous flashlight, followed by the silver moonlight that replaces it. It’s like a motorway in the sky, but one you can never quite catch.
The worst I’ve had it? A Force 10 storm, that came from nowhere. The boat was literally rolling from left to right, and for a moment, I genuinely thought that would be my last day on Earth. But in a way, that experience taught me something valuable: life is really held together by a string no thicker than a hair. Sure, I could have quit and kept myself safe on dry land after that, but I learned that wrapping myself in cotton wool won’t make me live forever. There are so many variables at play, so many things beyond my control. I’ve known people who simply dropped dead, with no illness, no warning. It’s like when your time’s up, it’s up—and it doesn’t matter what you’re doing.
Storms don’t just happen out at sea; they can happen anywhere. And I’ve found a way to live with them. They remind me of my younger days when I would get anxious or worried about something. My mind could create a storm of its own. To be honest, those mental storms were worse than the physical ones. The one at sea lasted a couple of hours, but the ones in my mind could go on for days.
So, next time you’re near the sea, take a walk along the shore. And remember: whatever’s happening in your life, the waves will keep breaking, and tomorrow the sun will rise again.
