The dirty little secret of most bike shops is that they create a bunch of trash. Most of it goes in a landfill, sometimes some of the cardboard gets recycled. We like to think of bikes as being green, but they come packaged in a bunch of plastics and paper and cardboard. Cafes and restaurants also create a bunch of waste. Over half can be recycled, but it's a pain in the butt so usually it's just tossed. This is the Frederick single stream recycling center. We haul a huge load here every week. Recycling is important even if it costs a tiny amount of money, gets you covered in week old soda and food and is generally a pain. Encourage other businesses you deal with to make the effort, beyond cardboard.
