A feminine glimpse into masculinity
Barbershops are a world that encompasses men, and has always struck my curiosity as a woman that clearly does not belong inside. It is an environment that attracts a plethora of wide research regarding its evolution, purpose, and interactions it withholds. Hair is a tool of self-expression, it is ultimately personal, social, and symbolic. I attempted to delve into the world of old-school barbers that have always appealed to me due to the loyalty of their customers and their stubborn existence despite the presence of modern barbers and hipsterism. The simplicity, familiarity, and friendliness of a traditional barbershop are its most appealing features. My question and quest was to better understand how barbershop culture can shape masculinity. Men may take use of barbershops as a way to pamper themselves, unwind, improve their health and appearance, and feel better about themselves. Additionally, these cultural institutions have a role in shaping and redefining modern masculinity. Without the constraints of societal norms and expectations, men may freely express, experience, and enjoy their masculinity at barbershops. This photo essay explores the detailed interactions between a man and his barber, the environment that they both and others have felt comfort within for years, and the cultural effects that reshape masculinity through barbershop culture.
