Apparently an unpopular GOT thought.
Ok, so I'm going to start with the fact that while I didn't love much of the second half of season 8, and there are MANY inconsistencies, there is something that I am about to defend.
I have seen So. Many. Complaints/comments about Jon being "punished and sentenced to the wall"
When I first watched the finale I wasn't upset at all about Jon's storyline because I thought it was understood that Tyrion and Bran were pulling one over on Greyworm and Danerys supporters. The whole part where they give him his "sentence" was to allow Greyworm to believe that Jon was going to live a shitty future so he would leave.
Let's look at the evidence:
1. We as an audience know that there was no one left in the nights watch except those that made it to Winterfell (Edd says so in EP. 2)
2. We as an audience also know in EP 4 that Tormund was taking the wildlings back to the wall with the intention of going north and Jon asks him in the same episode to take Ghost with him.
3. Bran is the three eyed raven, he knows everything past and present. He would definitely have known the above information and Tyrion who was hand of the queen (pre episode 6) would have also known.
I believe it was Tyrion and Bran's plan all along to allow him that freedom and anyone that calls that a punishment....well I disagree with you. Hard.
4. There's no need for the wall. The north has an acceptable relationship with the wildlings and the white walkers are gone.
5. When Jon actually shows up at the wall, there is no nights watch, only wildlings (and Ghost) and he leaves with them to go north of the wall and live as a free man.
It was Tyrion and Bran's plan all along to allow him that freedom and anyone that thinks he was being punished...I disagree.. hard.
