Disney’s Sleeping Beauty was first released on January 29th, 1959.
One of the film’s iconic scenes - when Briar Rose meets Prince Phillip for the first time to the tune of “Once Upon a Dream” - was called Sequence 8 when it was being produced. It was a particularly hard sequence to get right (Walt Disney rejected it several times) and ultimately had to be done 4 times, almost bankrupting the studio in the process. (x)
Disney legend Marvin Davis (1910 - 1998) was a master planner, art director and scenic designer. He is remembered by Disneyland fans for designing the exterior of the Haunted Mansion (pic 3), Sleeping Beauty Castle (pics 4-6) and the buildings on Main Street, U.S.A.. Davis also drew the master plan for Walt Disney World (pic 2) and contributed to the design of Walt Disney World’s Train Station (pic 1), Contemporary Resort and Polynesian Resort.
WHAT
Disney’s Frozen will soon merit its own chapter in the entertainment industry Big Book. The 2014 Oscar winner for best animated feature has earned over US$1 billion at the box office, currently the second highest-grossing animated feature in history, behind “Toy Story 3.” The movieâs phenomenal financial success has obscured under-the-hood examination of its performance engine. As an acting teacher, I am an artistic purist; grosses and popularity awards donât mean much to me. My standard of measurement is the emotional impact a movie has on its audience and its elegance as a work of art. “Frozen” is beautiful to see, fun to sing along with and is a modern day marketing marvel, but the script has structural and performance issues that are worth examining because they impact directly on acting.
BAM. I love Frozen, but I have my issues with it. This article reflects very accurately my own criticisms.

For what it's worth
When people started calling it a new Disney renaissance starting with Princess and the Frog as Little Mermaid and Tangled as Beauty and the Beast, I disagreed. PatF seemed about the quality of late 90s ho-hum Disney animated musicals, and Tangled was still clinging to that sickening self-referential attitude of the 2000s, not to mention the craft in the story/cinematography/art direction/musical numbers seemed pretty unthoughtful, despite having so much money thrown at it.
Frozen, however, is AT LEAST the quality of the Little Mermaid, and, dare I say, bit better.

Frozen
I saw it. I enjoyed it a lot. I also enjoyed Tangled. Tangled is incredibly flawed. Frozen, not as much. The second half doesn't live up to the first half, but who's going to be bothered? It was ten times better than Tangled. There was one part of Frozen's story that was blatantly formulaic, but that criticism comes partly from the fact that I feel like I can judge this film by higher standards. The finale was not nearly as cool as the opening. Olaf may be ugly, but he's cute and unobtrusive for the most part. Flynn Rider is infinitely more obnoxious. I really missed some meaningful development between Anna and Kristoff. Could have used more of that over sassy banter, especially because I feel that the climax fell a little flat without it. Best since the Lion King? Hmmm...well, I believe the biggest Disney animated film triumph between this and the Lion King was Tarzan (ironically also directed by Chris Buck), and Tarzan was way more flawed than Frozen. So yup, quite possibly. Honestly, "lazy character design" doesn't concern me nearly as much as the intelligence of a story. If you have character design concerns about Frozen, I direct your attention toward Tangled. In fact, if you have any criticism about Frozen, I direct your attention to any worse case of it in Tangled. And the most important thing about Frozen is that it seemed to really care about itself and take itself seriously. Tangled seemed like the work of a blasé Flynn Rider-type who threw in a couple of songs, a princess, a lot of sassy self-commentary and not a lot of thought and called it a day. Frozen just seemed to work much harder at being something special, and it paid off.
