Kraken Up
nonavalon
Merlin spread her stance wide to keep balance on the ship now rocking violently from the kraken’s thrashing. One frantic tentacle gouged at the ship, shattering a swathe of the gunwale.
She reached out a hand toward the beast and muttered a spell, throwing quite a notable volume of magical power behind its casting. As if a massive fist had pressed a divot into the sea, the water surrounding the beast’s body receded, leaving its softest parts exposed to their attacks.
“Ban, your turn. Take care with my specimen.”
Beady, mean eyes glared at them from either side of a stone-like beak set near the juncture of its legs. Though she couldn’t see it, based on the creature’s anatomical similarity to a squid, she assumed that a serrated mouth lurked at the back of its bulbous head. Were its internal organs as equally reminiscent of its smaller cousins, she wondered? Studying this creature was going to be delightful. If he damaged it, she would be irritated.
“The hell ye mean, take care with it?”
Ban scowled down at the monstrosity. He could think of several ways to dispatch the thing, but most of them were messy. Merlin probably wouldn’t approve. Removing a vital organ with Snatch would be the most efficient. Except…he wasn’t sure what was vital on this kind of thing.
“I’ve only ever fried up this guy’s little relatives. What’s what in that mass o’ guts? ♪”
Only one way to really find out, he supposed. Not knowing how long the magician would be able to hold the creature, he vaulted over the remains of the railing. The Kraken’s flesh was a bit softer than he’d expected, and he sank in a little. It also reeked of dead fish and old seaweed.
Fun.
Willing magic into his weapon, he lashed out at the main body, where he assumed something important must be. The pointed tip pierced the rubbery hide, and the magic latched onto whatever was there. With great effort, he yanked the weapon back, along with some organ or other.
“I got it’s…whatever thiiiiiis is!”
The Kraken let out a horrible sound, a kind of whistling screech, and began thrashing even more furiously. Once again, Ban found himself flung against the side of the ship. This was just not his day.
“Please tell me that worked. I dinna want tae do that agaaaain.♫”
“Of course it worked, but to make it angrier!” hard to blame it, anyone would get mad if a stranger ripped out their organs with a weapon. Harlequin didn’t know how much longer he could keep the tentacles under control. Chastiefol may be strong, but it wasn’t indestructible; he could swear some of the stitches were starting to rip. This wasn’t good…
“Merlin! Do something!” honestly, the woman was scary in many ways already, he didn’t really need to add her morbid interest for a sea monster to the list, as expected as that could be.

Anyone else would’ve probably been bothered by what the kid wanted him to do, but the fairy saw no harm in his plan. It wasn’t as if a normal human could ever keep up with his speed if he decided to get serious. Should Ban be in danger, it wouldn’t be hard to reach him.
“Fine then, we’ll go with that. Don’t be reckless, I’ll be keeping an eye on you.” and he meant it. While he couldn’t literally watch him all the time, if he stayed close enough, his poor heart reading ability would be enough to pick up on the kid’s emotion. At any sign of distress or panic, the fairy would be on his way, faster than any human could ever hope to be.
The last rays of the sun vanished below the rooftops. The darkness could still be frightening, hiding all sorts of unfriendly and dangerous folk. But as Zhivago had taught him, it could also be an advantage.
As long as you stayed alert and kept your guard up, the shadows would be on your side.
Ban moved silently toward the darkened building. By now, the streets had cleared out aside from the odd drunkard. Standing on tiptoe to peer into the window, he confirmed the shopkeeper had left. The door at the far end of the room was closed.
Picking the lock was a relatively simple task, he’d learned it quickly. Still, his height made it more difficult than it should have been. Ban wished he were taller. He pushed the door open slowly, to keep the hinges from squealing. He was light enough that the floorboards shouldn’t creak. There were some advantages to being tiny.
Ban spared a glance behind him. He could still see Harlequin, even in the night’s gloom. The boy sighed. Anyone with eyes would notice that coat. He’d just have to hope that the fairy was as strong as he seemed to think he was if it came to a confrontation.
He slipped inside the shop.
From a safe distance, Harlequin quietly observed the kid doing his job. Everything was apparently going fine, if the lack of angry humans throwing things was anything to go by. While he hoped that everything would go alright and without any incident, he was already prepared for the worst, fingers twitching and ready to use his weapon.
Minutes passed, and everything was still quiet. Did something happen? Was he ok? He really hated to have to wait in the darkness -metaphorically and literally-.

He merely nodded in answer, not ready to get into details. Even if he wanted to share the story, the words were stuck in his throat, bitter as ever, always reminding him of his own failure, the sin he would never be able to atone for.
In his drunken state, it took more than a few seconds for his mind to register the man’s words, but once it did, his eyes widened, his surprise clear. He opened his mouth, but struggled to find the words for a moment.
“How…” looking down, the fairy shook his head with a sigh. “I… I’m not the Fairy King…” the title was nothing but hollow words, not holding any meaning for him, not now that he had done nothing to deserve it.
“Everyone died… they died and I didn’t do anything… I thought I was strong enough to protect them… I was… I am a fool..”
Ban drained the remaining ale, savoring the warm, disorienting buzz and contemplating the next bottle on the bedside shelf. The steady drumbeat of the rain continued.
“I dinna know what happened, back then…But ye had yer reasons…♪”
It wasn’t as if he were the only member of their party who had failed.
Ban selected another bottle, though it hung unopened in his fingers as he rested his chin on King’s eternally-tousled brown hair, his own thoughts swirling..
He should be angry. He should hate King for being the one to leave her in the first place.
But he didn’t.
Not after seeing King’s reaction that day in the Capitol of the Dead. Seeing how much he had truly cared.
Elaine’s death was his own sin, his own weakness, not King’s.
“She never stopped caring either, ye know. I thought…” his voice trailed off for a moment, drowned out by the storm.
“I thought th’ Fairy King must be someone pretty amazin’. She jus’ laughed. Said ‘It’s not like that at all, he’s a crybaby who can barely hide his feelings’“. He chuckled softly.
“Stiiiiiill, ne’er thought it would be ye. Though, come tae think of it…Guess it was obvious~.” He grinned into King’s hair.
“Ye don’t get tae make fun o’ me fer coming up with shite nicknames anymooooore. ♫”
For awhile, the only noise filling the room was the rain drops against the window.
King was silent, head resting in his hands, for once not complaining about the weight of the man. He let the words sink in, the fog in his mind replaced for a moment by the memories of his beloved sister, remembering all the times she fussed over him, or when she scolded him, always with that worried and caring expression on her face.
He really missed her.
“That… t-that sounds.., just like her…” if Ban noticed how his voice cracked, how he was almost unable to speak, King didn’t care, and he certainly didn’t care when the man saw him crying his heart out.

“I wouldn’t need to do this if you didn’t decide to try and take on all those weird humans on your own.” he clearly wasn’t happy with what just happened.
“And I got your damned chest, you’re welcome.” with that, their conversation was over, the merman more focused on the enviroiment, looking for any other possible threat nearby.
There was no way to know if those that attacked them were the only foes in that island, it would be better to be careful, at least for the time being, and sail as soon as they could.
“I’m immooooortal, I coulda handled ‘em with my eyes closed. Bet if ye’d have gotten outta there like I toooold ye th’ spell woulda been broken and ye wouldna had tae drown me. ♪ ”
Ban attempted unsuccessfully to right himself. In fact, if he didn’t know any better, he’d say the spotted green limb that held him was purposely keeping him inverted. Occasionally his head hit the sand below.
“An ye gotta admit, now that it’s o’er that was kinda fun, aye?” Ban spit out a mouthful of sand. “Ye think ye could maaaaybe..put me up there with ye? Let’s open that thing up and see jus’ what we risked yer neck fer. ♫”

Harlequin considered for a moment the pirate’s request, before pulling an unpleased face and then answering.
“Maybe for an immortal like you it could be fun, but for those like me who can die?” still dragging him through the sand, the merman didn’t notice a rock poking through it until he heard the distinct sound of a skull hitting it. Ops.
“And no, you’ll wait until we get back on the ship. We aren’t even that far away, look.” true to his word, the ship was finally in sight, thank the seas. Of course, not like Ban would be able to see it from his position, at least not unless he broke his neck or something along that line. Harlequin may or may not- scratch that he was definitely doing this on purpose.

❛ Incredible. The Fairy King’s forest is alive…
Amazed eyes wandered over the vast flora & beauty of the place, after finding by mere accident the place. A long story of how she managed to fall in there, in which one thing lead to the other & well, it didn’t matter for her now. —Bedivere was in an awe.
If there was something King was glad of, was seeing the forest once again. The dreadful sight of the charred remains was something he would never forget, and during all these years the guilt still haunted him. More than once he wondered if there was still something he could do to help his people and his home, sulking in his own failure. It was quite the relief to find out that a new, wonderful forest was alive and still growing.
This was one of those times, wandering alone around the forest, countless thoughts going through his mind, he was so caught in it that he almost missed the human. Almost.

While he wa busy shooting the soldiers, Harlequin barely catched with the corner of his eye the weird galra fidgeting with something on his arm. However, it wasn’t the right moment to worry about whatever that was. There were still plenty of enemies trying to stop him.
Focused as he was on shooting at the soldiers to clear a path, everything after that was a blur. Something hit him, and he could feel all his energy draining.
“W-what the…” before he could even realize what was going on, everything went black.
Ban’s gin widened as the oncoming guards began to stumble. He wasn’t sure what they unfortunate sensation they were experiencing, but he felt like a million GAC. Energy coursed through his body, and he was pretty sure he could lift a spacecraft if he wanted to.
This thing was awesome.
One by one the other Galra collapsed, and Ban prowled leisurely toward the now-clear exit corridor. He turned toward the enraged being who had been battling alongside him.
“Ye can calm down now, thanks tae my new toy our path is clear…oh.”
The stranger was collapsed in a heap.
“Huh, guess it had a radius after all. Heeey, are you deid ♫?
He knelt by the smaller figure, checking for a pulse. Good, he was just unconscious. If this kid really was what Ban thought he was, then the last thing he wanted to do was kill him. Pointed ears pricked up at the sounds of more boots approaching. Tucking the stranger under one long arm, he raced toward the exit, the stolen power giving him an incredible speed boost. They’d closed the blast doors, but he simply pried them open with brute force.
He dropped below the ship’s gangplank, ducking into the shadows. A few more guards raced past, but Ban was in his element. He’d learned long ago to work with his nigh-on-8ft height. There were very few things he couldn’t climb, or squeeze himself into. He made his way silently toward the back of the docking platform and freedom.
His own little ship, the Vulpecula, was docked in the woods beyond the landing pad. He was grateful for little backwater spaceports. The Empire sometimes got lax, but that was to be expected when you’ve been ruling for millennia unopposed. Of course, there was talk now of some lion mechs or whatever suddenly causing trouble, and security was on the rise. Ban wanted to make sure he pulled off this heist before things got complicated.
Mission accomplished. Well, almost. Now he had to get safely into space before this purported recoil kicked in. It would be embarrassing if he got captured due to passing out just before making the getaway.
And there was the small matter of his unexpected guest. He dumped the stranger rather unceremoniously on the floor beside the captain’s chair. First things first. He guided the vessel out of the planet’s gravitational pull, then plugged in the coordinates for one of his favorite hideyholes in the nearby asteroid belt. Once on course, he turned back to the unconscious stranger.
Aside from some scratches, he seemed unharmed. He was, however, covered in weapons. Ban had removed at least three knives, some sort of small blaster, something that appeared to be a collapsible spear, and something else that seemed to be a grenade before he gave up and simply stripped the kid of nearly every article of clothing aside from those that most furless beings seemed to deem necessary.
Satisfied that the kid wasn’t going to hurt himself or accidentally blow up Vulpecula, Ban deposited him below in the sleeping quarters, locked up the pile of weapons and clothing, and headed back to the bridge for a well-earned drink. If he was going to pass out anyway or possibly die (unlikely), he was going to do it happy.
Waking up usually wasn’t exactly something pleasant for him. That may or may not be due to the fact that illegally aboarding a ship would usually lead him to sleep crammed into a very small and uncomfortable place, or in very rare occasions, being caught. Anyway, this wasn’t the first time he woke up with a hellish headache, and it sure wouldn’t be the last one. Waking up in an actual bed, tangled in sheets, and with only his underwear, however? That was a first.
Just what the hell happened while he was unconscious? … Why was he even unconscious in the first place? Once his head stopped throbbing, or at least the pain was manageable, Harlequin tried to recall the recent events: the galra ship, the alarm… did he got caught? No, that couldn’t be possible, or else he would be cuffed and locked in a dark cell. The room he was in looked way different than a galra shipped, let alone a cell. Then what…?
Wait, he wasn’t alone during the fight in the ship, was he? No, he definitely wasn’t, there was an odd galra that run into him… the galra! If his supposition was correct, then he had to find that galra. Not wanting to waste anymore time, he stood up in a rush… and fell, his head spinning and his body shaking. Had there been something in his stomach, he surely would’ve threw it up already by now.
Why the hell was he feeling so ill and weak? Did that damned galra do something to him?
Well, there was only one way to find out. After a few ticks, Harlequin decided to try again, his time standing up slowly and carefully, leanig on the wall for support. Once he was sure that he wouldn't fall again, he started making his way towards the door.

“Whooooa… ♪”
Ban whistled through pointed fangs. His unusual battle partner was…unexpectedly aggressive. And possessed very good aim. Still, high body counts weren’t really Ban’s style. While he didn’t feel any sense of kinship whatsoever with the Galra soldiers, he hated it when jobs got unnecessarily messy.
Ignoring the blaster shots (despite the odd one finding its mark), he continued to fiddle with the gauntlet’s controls. He tried one last combination of buttons, and felt something come to life in the device, the remaining lights along its length glowing brightly.
“Noooow we’re talkin’.” He raised a gloved hand toward the oncoming soldiers, lips peeled back in a grin. “Let’s see jus’ what this thing is capableooooof. ♫”
He had no idea what the gauntlet’s range was. If it was a line, he could work with that. If it was a circle, even better.
That’s what experiments were for~

She noticed that he was looking for a few good moments…was he judging her…? At least she felt as if he were. The girl after all had a good intuition. Though, she quickly averted her thoughts back to what the other said.
“Oh! So you live here. Why didn’t you say that from the start?” She questioned before going on. “Is your home nearby? I’ll walk you there! After all, I can’t just let you just wonder around alone. It is dangerous as you said. Come on Harlequin, lead the way.” She offered a small smile before showing him her bow and arrows. “if anything tries to attack us, I’ll protect the both of us, so no need to worry while you’re with me. I’ll keep you safe.” Wow…how dumb can one person be? Curse her chronic heroism.
Was what she last stated. Man…she really is hard to shake off, isn’t she?
“I told you already, I don’t need company!” much less from a human girl.
“And I don’t need protection either. You should leave before you can get yourself in trouble.” He was the Fairy King, for crying out loud, if anything it was him the one who could protect her!
And protecting her might be what he will end up doing, if she didn’t leave anytime soon. He now highly doubted that she could be a threat for the fairies, but it didn’t mean that she wouldn’t find any real threat. It had been awhile since a human last tried to raid the forest and steal the Fountain, and things were never quiet and peaceful for too long. Chances are, someone was preparing to attempt and take the Fountain, and should it really happen, having a human girl around would make his duty more complicated. Definitely not what he needed.

“Ye know what yer deein? What is that, a knife? Ye realize they’re wearin’ ARMOR, riiiight? ♪”
Ban wasn’t particularly concerned for his own well-being. The worst they could do was torture him a bit and then toss him in a cell. Been there, done that. He really wanted to play with this new toy though, so letting himself get captured was out of the question.
He probably could have bulldozed his way through the oncoming guards easily enough, but there was something about this kid that warranted looking into. His scent, and the design of his clothing reminded Ban of that world. If that was the case…he couldn’t just leave the stranger behind.
Huffing in annoyance, Harlequin decided to ignore the galra and focus on the enemy. He could do whatever he wanted as long as he didn’t try to stop him.
Not even a tick later, the soldiers opened fire, and Harlequin didn’t waste anymore time. Dodging the shoots as much as he could, he tried to come up with a plan to get out of there as soon as possible, possibly without dying. That would be nice.
He briefly considered using a granade, but then decided against it. The corridor was too small and too crowdy, the probability of getting caught in the explosion was too high. Looking at the closest enemy soldier, he quickly aimed and threw his knife, the blade enbedding itself in the galra’s throat.
As soon as the body fell, the blaster in his hads was pried away by an invisble force, landing in Harlequin’s hands safely. The exchange of weapons costed him a moment of distraction, and a shoot grazed his arm, but he ignored the pain and the bleeding, more focused on shooting the soldiers, not hesitating as some of them fell to the floor. He wasn’t going to let himself get captured here.

“Um I think so? I’m not really sure. Back home a lot of us could use magic but it does come more naturally to some than others.” She never really stopped to think about it before but it’s definitely something to ponder on later. “Is magic common here?”
Now, that was a bit weird. Even with his limited knowledge, he couldn’t remember magic being all that common between the humans. Where did she come from?
“Well, not really, at least for humans, as far as I know. Where do you come from?”
nonavalon
“I see.” She supposed she had to concede that that was at least a logical excuse, if not the truth. Besides, regardless of his intentions, he provided useful information for her to work with. “In any case, you have my thanks. Magic cancel.” At her command, the spell enclosing them melted into nothingness.
“For the record, your method of contact was terribly stupid. I could very well have entered into combat with you instead, and then where would we be?”
The fairy didn’t seem fazed at all once the walls disappeared, not even bothering to look up once the last bits of magic faded from existence.
"I'm sorry for not having enough time to plan a better entrance- next time I'll make sure to send a letter beforehand while I wait for the other demons to be done with their mess."

“Okay. Now, I need you to hold still while I do this.“ She pulled out what little medical supplies she had and started patching him up, careful not to wrap bandages too loose or too tight. “Can you walk? Or should I carry you?”
While the treatment wasn’t something pleasant, it was nothing he couldn’t handle. At least she wasn’t being as harsh as most of his comrades usually were.
"Don't worry, I can walk on my own- and I mean it."
robodoption
She sucked a breath through her teeth. She wasn’t that great at administering first aid to begin with, but this would be a doozy.
“Okay, um…how far away is the nearest town?” she asked. “Whatever I’m able to do isn’t gonna be much more than a temporary fix.”
“I don’t think it’s very far from here...” he should really start to try and actually memorize a little more about humans’ towns and stuff. Of course, he could fly and get wherever he wanted in the spawn of mere seconds, but knowing a few things wasn’t too bad either.
“That way.” with a calm completely out of place for someone that was almost bleeding to death, he pointed in the direction where he could recall seeing the nearest town.

“Oh… Cool!” She beams with a small grin. The pillow, weirdly called Chastiefol, reminded her of the magic carpet in Agrabah.
“Huh? Oh yes I have!” Astra nods with a small smile. “I actually know all sorts of magic, though Lightening and Wind magic are more my specialty.” She was getting better at gravity magic though. “I can do some other stuff too but I’m not really sure how it all works yet.”
"All sorts? Are you a mage?" she looked a bit too young for that, but it's not like he minded, everyone was free to do what they want with their own life, be it studying magic or training to become a knight. Who was he to judge them?
