But you see, the idea that some have that because Data is an android, he could never love and be loved is so strange to me. Data is an artist, a being who smells flowers and holds a cat, a romantic. I don’t care if the message some producer wanted to pass was that he’s nothing but a talking machine, I don’t. He may not breathe like you and I, but who are we to deny Data the greatest human act that is love? And what do we say to the people, people like me, who relate in a deep level to the character, that because we are not like the others around us we cannot love and be loved? No, that simply cannot be the message we get from Star Trek, that’s not what Star Trek stands for. Data can love, even if he doesn’t understand exactly how. Data can be loved, even if -or especially because- he isn’t used to this experience. Please, respect the android.
