He didn’t really like the fact she didn’t believe him but Austin decided to let it slide by for now. She was happy to talk about basketball, and that’s all that mattered. “Hell yeah I am!” He responded, maybe a bit too enthusiastically, “My coach in school always said my height was an advantage and I practiced like everyday and I can do cool trick shots and stuff! I bet you’re awesome, cool people are always good at basketball it’s like, the rule.”
“I mean, you’re a fucking tree, dude. I’d hope the height was helping you,” she commented, gesturing upwards to point out their height difference. Laughing at both his energy and his genuine insistence that she was cool, Riley reached for another glass of champagne from a passing server. This was gonna take a while, this guy was the nicest one he’d met here so far. “We should play sometime. Get a couple more people together. Maybe I’ll let you win.”

Maybe next time just go for caramel syrup? That’s just liquid sugar and I’m sure you’ll get less weird looks.
Eh, I don’t give a shit about weird looks. Someone’s always gonna have an issue, right? Might as well do whatever.

Aurelia was sure that this was the only place in town that wasn’t monitored, at least not heavily. Of course, it wasn’t like it was some sort of police state with cameras following them constantly, but there were people taking notes and making comments and she needed a break from it all. Carraway Ridge clearly wasn’t a cause of concern for the project, and it was nice to sit and think (and maybe bring a bottle of vodka to drink to ease the boredom), staring up at the old warehouse, trying to make sense of the graffiti on the walls.
“Fuck me,” She muttered with a jump when the other woman spoke. “You scared the shit out of me.” Aurelia then added, not exactly answering her question. She glanced over, shrugging. “Ghosts, previous project studies who didn’t obey the rules,” She paused, eyeing her over, “People who put more sugar than sense into their coffees.”
A grin formed on Riley’s face at the other’s answer, eyes still on the warehouse. She’d find out. Maybe not right this second but one of these days, she’d find out what was in every last one of these. It was only when the last comment came that she finally looked into the direction of the voice. “Oh hey, it’s you. I stand by my coffee order.” she greeted. “What’re you doing here?”

Rory stared her down for a second, trying to work out what side she was on, exactly, before deciding she was cool. For now. “Well, I’ve been the cause of many a frown line I suppose,” He muttered, before cursing under her breath at the kick she gave his chair, steadying himself slightly. “Fucking psychotic behaviour that, you canne just kick a stranger.” He chided, though his smirk made it clear he didn’t really give a fuck.
The submissive rolled his eyes at her comment as he grabbed the cigarette, fumbling in his pocket for a lighter. Yeah, he knew, and his noise of contempt made it clear that he really didn’t care. “Truman Show the only thing it can be compared to, yeah? That or The Sims.” He added, with a hum. Though he wanted to argue more, he conceded in the end, shufflinf over to the window and perching on the window sill. “Real names or fake names?” He asked, words muffled slightly from the cigarette in his mouth, rolling the lighter aggressively to get it lit.
“I can do whatever I want,” she retorted casually, giving him a face. Stranger or not, she’d never really considered herself bound by the rules of society and she wasn’t going to start now. Lighting her cigarette once she was by the window, she took a long draw and then watched the smoke dissipate into the night air. She didn’t smoke often, not cigarettes, but they did offer a nice break when things got too much. At his question, she hummed in thought and turned her gaze to eye him up from the side. “Riley. But if anyone asks, I’m Genevieve and my father owns this building so obviously I can smoke here.”

‘Not gonna lie. I’m not sure what I was expecting when I signed up for the project, but I guess I kinda thought it was going to be different.’ He stubs his cigarette and throws it into a bin right outside of the fire station. It’s been a slow day, in fact, all days up till now had been slow. No fires, no car accidents - the biggest action was getting a cat off the tree and that had been useless - if it can climb up it can get down on it’s own. ‘I mean it’s so quiet and normal. I guess I just thought I was gonna end up in some post-apocalyptic novel or something.’

“I mean, it might not be post-apocalyptic but it’s a little creepy,” Riley argued, taking another draw from her own cigarette. She didn’t really know how she’d ended up outside the fire station but the people here seemed chill and so far, nobody had told her to leave so she’d made herself comfortable for the time being. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s real Trueman Show. I mean, none of this is real. We’re just like.. guinea pigs.”

I mean, it’s coffee-flavoured sugar by that point, surely. What exactly do you put in your coffee anyway?
I mean... sugar. The girl looked at me a bit weird after the third package but, eh.

Austin’s eyes widened. “Oh no! NO! I’d never take that!” He argued, though his defence didn’t seem completely honest, despite it being true. “Like, I have smoked weed and stuff but that’s it I swear!” He calmed down slightly when she gave her name, and asked questions about basketball. “Hi Riley, and yeah I do! Like whenever I can, it’s my favourite thing apart from bowling. Do you like stuff like that?”
“Sure dude, whatever you say.” Riley wasn’t sure whether or not she believed him but honestly, she didn’t care that much. He did seem fun enough to hang around with at least for the time being. And he didn’t even want to talk about where he’d invested his stocks. “Yeah, I play basketball. You any good?”

Rory grinned, wavign his hand as if she was showering him in compliments. “You know, they modelled him off me,” He said, an easy lie, but one he liked to tell, moving to sit on a seat, looking through the room in disdain. “You ever wish you could set something up in flames?” He muttered, mainly to himself but he didn’t particularly care if the stranger in the room heard him.
Getting comfy, he faced her again, mimicking the ‘gimme’ motion. “I left mine at home, and if I don’t get my nicotine fix I’ll claw someone.” Rory explained, “And I doubt I’ll be given Truman Show jail again this time round.”

“I hear that arson is generally frowned upon,” she returned, just as thoughtful as the other. It was one of the few things she hadn’t done. Hanging out in places she wasn’t supposed to be, smoking, all of that was fine. But she has never had actual plans to damage anything. At his motion, she made her way over, though she made it a point to kick against a leg of his chair for good measure.
“You have horrible manners, you know that?” she informed him, but produced a pack of cigarettes anyway and flipped one to him. His next comment had her eyes widening slightly and a finger wagging into his direction excitedly. “That’s what I fucking said. Anyway, they probably have smoke detectors here.” With that, she nodded towards a window and headed over to open it up lest they set off any alarms.

The good thing about working at the record store was that she didn’t have a lot of hours. Given the fact that her basic necessities were paid for, there really was no need to do more than a couple hours to afford some extra stuff. Which meant she had plenty of time to do other, more fun things. Like walk around the weirdly empty streets of Caraway Ridge, sneaking glances through broken windows and into construction sides. Where the rest of Westfield seemed to have a modern glitz and glamour to it, this looked like it hadn’t caught up to the rest.
She noticed the shadow of someone else close by but only glanced in the direction briefly before turning her head back to a graffiti-covered warehouse. “What do you think’s in there?”

“Oh my God, you’re absolutely brilliant. Okay we have to start looking as soon as possible. Do you think there’s like, canvases hidden in here?” Eloise grinned and began shifting through the room. It seemed rather unimportant but that didn’t mean there would be no secrets locked away in here. Sometimes the best secrets were hidden in plain sight. “I suppose I’m a little disappointed that there isn’t a sex dungeon but I suppose nothing can be perfect.”
“Unless…” she thought for a moment, “What if the old people were getting their rocks off on getting drawn nude by starving college artists. Not exactly a sex dungeon but it’s adjacent.”

“Oh my god, a sex dungeon would be so much better!” Honestly, anything out of this ordinary that would spice this place up was a win in Riley’s book. She was fine for now but she knew herself and a few weeks or maybe, if she was lucky, months from now when she’d turned over every pebble in this town, she’d get bored. And that was never a good time. So anything exciting she found now might help her out later.
“I wouldn’t put it past them. You can’t tell me anybody in that room is there just for the art of it all. They’re all there for the boobs.”

The dinner was boring. And the alcohol wasn’t cutting it. And, if experience was to go by, places like these always had a secret nook that hid the good stuff, so Rory snuck away in hopes of finding something, even just some discarded badly rolled joint, to make this evening a bit more bearable.
He heard someone rummaging around in an adjacent room, light flooding under the doors in the otherwise dark corridors of the community centre, and he wondered if he had hit the jackpot. Smirking at the girl who he caught red-handed, looking like the very definition of sketchy if he ever saw one, Rory shut the door. “What do you have on you?” He asked. No point asking what she was doing, it was evident it was the same thing as him. But he might as well save time searching himself. “C’mon you have something. Sharing is caring, I won’t tell anyone.”
Riley raised an eyebrow at the guy who entered after her. Her first instinct was to assume he was an employee of some sort, sent to make sure Riley stayed within the bounds of legality or whatever. However, it became evident very quickly that maybe, that initial reading had been incorrect.
“Putting aside the fact that you sound like the Big Bad Guy from an after-school special, I gotta disappoint you.” She did actually subscribe to the same sentiment he had voiced, but shockingly, there hadn’t really been an opportunity to get her hands on weed on her journey here from jail. “I got cigarettes but they took the rest. ”

If she’s an actress she should be fired because she makes pretty fucking shitty coffee if you ask me.
Really? Mine seemed fine but then again, I was once told you apparently can’t call it coffee anymore if it’s 50% sugar. Which, by the way, is bullshit.

“Sorry, sorry. I’m not trying to be sneaky. Or, well,” Eloise corrected herself, laughing for a moment. Maybe she was trying to be sneaky, but probably in the same way it appeared this woman was. They both wanted to explore and see if there was a chance of unlocking some secret passage way that lead to a dungeon or a private sex room.
Or maybe just Eloise wanted there to be a private sex room. That just sounded so much more fun than sitting down at a dinner party bored out of her mind.
“I’m not trying to be sneaky with you, how’s that,” she smiled. “I think we’re after the same thing here. Curiosity might have killed the cat but satisfaction blah blah blah something something.”
Riley wasn’t one to question people’s motivations so long as they didn’t impact hers. Even less so if their intentions seemed to line up with her own. And sometimes, doing cool shit was more fun when you didn’t do it alone. So she shrugged, gesturing around the abandoned room filled with easels and drying clay pots. “A little disappointing compared to what I was hoping for,” she admitted almost sadly before an idea struck her.
“Oh, oh! Do you think they have a bunch of like, nude paintings? This feels like the place where someone’s always naked so struggling college students and middle aged wanna-be artists can paint them.”

“This is like, totally awesome, right?” Austin had been a bundle of excitement all day, and was practically shaking with enthusiasm. “Like, look at all this food, I don’t think I’ve seen this much food like, ever, even counting when we used to get like group take outs when I was on the boy’s basketball team in high school.” He paused, frowning. “I mean, obviously boy’s team, not that like girl’s can’t play - oh and like all the other genders too! Anyway hi I’m Austin!”
“I don’t know whether you’re on speed or just always like that but I love the energy,” Riley decided with a laugh, following Austin’s gestures towards the food. Half the people she’d come across so far acted like they’d had a stick implanted into their asses so it was nice to meet someone chill. Or well, with a total lack of chill but good vibes at least. “Riley, hi. You still play ball?”
where: welcome dinner - adjacent room
While the dinner was cool and all, fancy had never been Riley’s brand. So while the others mingled in their expensive dresses and ate fish eggs or whatever, Riley had taken it upon herself to explore the rest of the community center. When else was she gonna get the chance to poke around the place unattended? Sure, it probably didn’t house any mind-blowing secrets but she wouldn’t know until she had a look.
She had just slipped into an unlocked door just down the hallway and was rummaging around what appeared to be art room for a less suspicious light than the big one when she heard someone else enter the room and jumped. “Holy shit, dude,” she replied as she turned around towards the noise. “Don’t sneak me up on me like that.”
Yo, is it just me or is anyone else getting Truman Show vibes? Like, are we also secretly in a reality show? Is that chick at the coffee show real? Does she work there because she’s into coffee or does the project thing pay her? It’s all pretty wild. Anyway, before we gotta play dress up tonight, I’mma explore around this dystopia a bit.
