this isn’t talked about enough but i would just like to point out this very important character moment in the finale
Piper expects Deke to be in there with the team as they’re all discussing the fate of the world and what to do and if to save Coulson or save the world, yet Deke is standing outside, away from the team, and stating that this is for THEM to decide, NOT HIM
yet….don’t forget here, Deke’s own existence is tied to whatever decision this team makes, in fact, Fitz stated plenty of times his belief that if they change the future then Deke will simply blink out of existence
so you got the team inside arguing and discussing choices that DIRECTLY AFFECTS Deke, if anything, he has every right to be involved in this conversation, but he steps away from it, he says this is for them to decide even though it is his right to decide wanting to exist too
there is a huge amount of character growth and maturity in this one moment
this is his life and his existence on the line, yet instead of rushing in there and getting into arguments and fighting with everyone and be selfish as he might have done when he first met the team, he instead simply accepts his fate, whatever it may be, and just go make the best of it and maybe visit the world while he still can
he’s not upset or jealous or blaming anyone, he simply understands and accepts it and puts his own fate in the hands of the team even though they don’t realize what a big leap of faith he is taking with them
Deke spent a large portion of his life doing everything to keep himself alive, to ensure his own survival, everything he does good or bad, comes from wanting to keep himself alive, yet in this moment, he sheds that attitude of selfishness, he sheds this trait that has defined his life, and puts the feelings and emotions of others above his own survival
it’s his existence that is threatened and to be determined by the decisions made, but the greater good is no longer just about him and he recognizes that
