Trobriand returns!

Hello, citizens of Tumblr! It is I, the one and only, Jacques Pierre Romain “Santiago” Denis de Keredern de Trobriand, aide-de-camp extraordinaire! But you can just call me Jacques or Trobriand.

I am the proud cousin of Simon Bolivar and uncle of Regis de Trobriand, Hero of Gettysburg. But most importantly, I am the aide-de-camp of Iron Marshal Louis-Nicolas Davout!

Through grace of God and Davout, I am allowed to speak to you, the people. The Marshal has also selected me to be the voice for my fellow aides like Colonel Falcon and Bourke.

So, to sum it up, if you want to talk to me or other aides about anything and everything, feel free to write to my inbox!

Napoleon's costume design - Part 2

This is the continuation of this post, where I've created my own headcanon for Napoleon's style evolution, or at least the one I would follow if I had to do a comic about him.

Here I've added his uniform as a Consul and his uniform for war as an Emperor. You can see much better the smooth flow I intended to create across the designs.

I gave myself quite some liberty especially with the latter, to the point that this is a re-design rather than an interpretation of the original. The belt is kept as a prop and ties even this new look to his previous ones; he has no tricolored sash now, as to subtly say he's now faithful only to himself. This belt is full of work tools, just like a carpenter or a plumber's; it represents how, despite being an Emperor, Napoleon is still hardworking and prone to intervene first-hand on the field.

The leather details like the boots and gloves are heavily emphasized. The main inspiration is Vegeta's armor, which represents the heavy role the Saiyan Prince hides his insecurities behind. I've previously talked about how similar these two characters look to me (not just because they both are short jerks).

The leather elements also serve as a suggestive nod to the BDSM aesthetic; it's meant to suggest how warfare is a transverse way for him to seek gratification and self-affirmation he isn't able to find in his private life.

You know what day it is today.

It is December 7, 9:20 in the morning. 210 years ago, marshal Ney met his end facing the firing squad.

I portrayed him briefly in a costume competition, where I based my entry on his ill-fated decision to betray Bourbons and follow Napoleon. In those 90 seconds I managed to change from “I will bring him in the iron cage” to “Vive l’Empereur”. The audience loved it.

Standing there, reading Ney’s actual words, wearing his uniform, his hairstyle, trying to portray what I had read read (and also based on Dan O’Herlihy’s portrayal), I realised the weight of the decision. The man had to sacrifice his reputation and in the end his life in order to avoid ordering the French to slaughter their fellow French.

In that moment, I felt it. And I hope I did him justice.

The routine is like usual - it was Marshal Victor’s birthday after all. The said marshal is going to receive a card today. The weather is miserable on this day. It has been like this for two centuries.

Something changed, as the creature that used to be marshal Ney learned to grasp its power. He remembered the lessons he received and he was aware that a bit of concentration and patience would summon the sunshine.

However, he refused to do so. He was standing there, rain dripping from his face like tears he never shed for his own death. No, all his tears belonged to those he left behind and only saw again in an illusion crafted to drain his immense power and destroy the entirety of creation.

No, this rain, the wounds, that was one of the few remaining links to his humanity. He decided to leave the others, stay with the guards and help them to monitor the Void. He certainly managed to hold his ground and fought many battles.

But on this day, Marshal Ney is not fighting. He is standing in the rain, and thinking about his beloved children and his wife he grew so fond of despite the circumstances. He held his hands in prayer for those he lost the day they lost him.
