I’ve been working on a short story about a sheep having a major identity crisis, and it’s done! I’ll be posting it on CF and dA, maybe even here on Tumblr, why not.

Oh yikes. We might have blown up the comments section on page 77 of Ascend on DeviantArt. What was a comment that started on about how unlikable the characters are exploded into people expressing the issues they’ve had with this webcomic’s writing. Some quick takeaways:

1. If a ton of people are expressing confusion about your story, something is not working.

2. If people are bored with your story and complain about the fanservice, something is not work.

3. Don’t be that author who claims they want critical feedback, but then fight with readers if the critique isn’t “polite” enough. It’s okay to point out if someone is being rude, but don’t be rude in return. And for the love of all that’s good, don’t call someone a “bigot” because called your character a self-insert.

4. Don’t block people and then unblock them just to argue.

5. Block rude people and move on. Take useful criticism and try to figure out in what ways your story can be improved.

And if you’re going to pay a well-known artist hundreds of dollars per page and have the comic uploaded to said artist’s DA page, be prepared for some criticism. One, because the content is literally pushed in front of people’s faces because they chose to watch the artist. Two, if the work isn’t as good as the artist’s own work, there’s going to be push back. Excellent artwork can’t save a story from subpar writing.

After I was encouraged to check out the Twitter account of the Ascend author, I saw a lot that explains his behavior towards critics. Worse yet, he’s someone with views I can’t support, mainly fascist ones. The receipts are in the replies and notes on this post.

Going forward, I won’t be reading or talking about Ascend. Consider this my last post on the subject.

discourse about redemption arcs would vastly improve if instead of always asking “is this character redeemable?” people started asking “what message would it send to redeem this character?” and “would it be logical or satisfying on a narrative level to redeem this character?”

also i am begging people to realise that redemption is not the only possible kind of development for a villain. they can progress without it being a positive change. it's so boring and restrictive when the only reaction to a new bad guy is debating “will they be redeemed or not?”

Here's a pleasant surprise, Space Doe's Komorebi is back with updates after a two-year hiatus. The author mentioned in a Deviantart status update her 2020 was problematic. It's good to see her life is more stable. She returned with not one, but two new pages (203 and 204).

If you haven't read or heard of Komorebi, here is the beginning of the comic. It's a story about a herd of deer ruled by a wicked king, and has some religious themes. If you like comics such as A Doe's Salvation, What Lurks Beneath, and The Colour of Your Eyes, you'll likely enjoy this comic. I need to write in more detail on WordPress. This was just a quick one for now.

I am disappointed in you seal ( Account; exposedmundr ), not only did you lie to people - but also LIED TO ME, a friend that has been with you through thick and thin, you manipulated, played victim, adverted the situation, and kicked people out without a proper good reason, except because of your anxiety and paranoia consumed ya and made you irrational, impatient and cold to everyone. you have become the monsters; kiq and staz that everyone had collaborated. To stand up for justice as a group and as a team and everyone to give their perspectives of the home comic publicly TO JOIN instead of you making the server private again without NOTIFYING ANYONE. not only that you have tried to make everyone look like your enemies, and paint a pretty picture of your innocents. Cute how y’all talk big and tough, callin each other cowards and “Rogios” and “Kiques” but as soon as I try to enter the server, I’m immediately kicked, interesting. Scared of ol’ Troggy?

Anyway, I was just popping in to say:

Stop working with Surs/Lemon/Jonna/Backstabby Mcgee or whatever the fuck that pedantic little weirdo is calling himself every other day. CCS started with him, and it wasn’t until after he left we all discovered why. He’s looking for free artistic labor. He wanted us to write/illustrate his bizarre obsessive headcanons he had about Raela and then later the NPC character Jonna. Amazing to me that after five years he’s still doing it. Collecting artists to do his work for him, flipping out when people don’t want to listen to his elaborate and nonsensical headcanons 24/7. How about you just go write a fanfic, dude? We know you can draw, why manipulate others? Why try to cozy up to Staz? Think she’ll let you ghostwrite Jonna into a reincarnated lesbian on page one thousand? Nobody wants to completely rewrite Asmundr/Home but your weird lyin little ass, so go do that and stop manipulating people.

Also, fyi, this guy has given multiple discord group name lists to Kique, multiple times. Stop falling for his shit, and stop coddling him.

For real tho I wish some of you would work on your own projects rather than try to bully or manipulate Kique (or his homunculus Staz) into writing a better comic (the comic YOU want). He will never improve. He doesn’t even accept advice from close friends and he never has. Criticize and mock it all you want, but get out of the mindset believing you can convince him of anything or somehow change course of the comic. There’s nothing here to save and there never was, you’ve fooled yourself. The story you have in your mind is not the one you’re reading, it’s the one you wrote. So go write that and stop wasting your time.

At this point Home’s only value is a tool to teach people how not to write a bad story, and how to completely squander potentially interesting ideas. Critiquing it is more entertaining than the story will ever be. Kique will never accept critique or ways to improve, but yet he’s not above stealing others’ ideas. Honestly, the fans and their ideas are just as much as a co-writer as his actual co-writer, but he’ll never admit it.

Personally, I would implore people to put that effort into creating their own stories. Or support creators who actually value and respect their fans.
