I've compiled everything I've learned from the locals about the species I'm trying to find. This is what they had to say:

"Yes, I've heard of it, but I've never seen it, and I don't think I know anyone who has." - anonymous neighbour

"That's not real. You shouldn't pursue things that aren't real." - owner of Summertree Farm

"I have seen some strange things around this island. For example, that circle of rocks surrounding a statue near the port. Everybody knows about that, though. It does make me wonder. Who could have arranged such a thing?" - paperboy

"I don't believe in that supernatural BS." - anonymous gas station cashier

"Yeah, I've seen it. It was all dark outside, and I saw this dang deer in my backyard. That thing was suspicious, all right. Had three legs and only one antler." - anonymous neighbor

For the record, this does not match the description of the creature I want.

"I think I've seen something like that on the message board outside Resident Services. It was just a picture, though. Someone posted a flyer with this real scary deer and a caption above it saying, 'HAVE YOU SEEN THIS?' I took it down, though. It was scaring my daughter." - anonymous diner waitress

Wait.

"Who posted that?" I asked.

"I'm not sure, it was a while ago."

"Do you still have the flyer?"

"Actually, I'm not sure why, but I think I do. Somewhere at home, though. If I find it, I'll bring it to you."

Perfect. This could be a lead.

Entry 2

I suppose I should begin with my history surrounding Tropicana. I was born in Salem, Oregon, but my brother and I were sent to live here with my grandparents when we were young. Zeke was never too fond of it. He thought the old house we were moved into was creepy, with its creaking floors and antique dolls. Grandma had protested, saying that the house wasn't creepy, but original. After all, it was nearly one hundred years old. He said that it was too big of a change from our old house in Salem, though I was too young to remember it.

Tropicana is all I've ever known. When our grandparents passed away four years ago, Zeke vowed to renovate the house after spending ten years unsettled and on edge. He never did.

He never had the chance.

Exactly one year later, he headed out to run errands. I said okay, as long as he'd be home before dinner. Two hours had passed, and I started getting worried. I called his cell, but no response. Another two hours passed. The town was just as small then as it is now, so there were only a few places he could have been. I checked all of them.

It wasn't long before I saw them pulling his body out of the Summertree Lake. Battered, bruised, and bloody, one thing was obvious from the start.

He hadn't drowned.

He was killed.

My vision blurred as my world spun. I couldn't stay standing, so I laid down, trying to catch whatever breath was still in my body.

It has been three years since then, and all I've done is think. Whatever killed Zeke, I know it's still out there. There is nothing about his death that is natural, and if it was an animal, it was no ordinary creature.

I'm going to find it, Zeke.

I promise.

Entry 1

I’m starting this journal to document my progress in searching for this elusive cryptid that Resident Services swear doesn't exist. I know that it’s out there. I know that it's real. Tomorrow morning, I will start my journey by asking the townsfolk about their experiences with the Trioculus Deer. Some may not believe in it, but the truth remains.

That monster is the reason I lost my brother.

History

In the year 1860, two anonymous travelers discovered an island off the coast of Oregon, uninhabited by any signs of human life. They established new developments offshore, determined to colonize the area. To gain appeal and traction towards the island, they nicknamed the land “Tropicana”, drawing attention to the beachy shores and surrounding ocean. Despite the name, many oblivious tourists came to the island in search of a tropical getaway, only to find disappointment in the wooded, mountainous landscape. Aware of the negative reputation Tropicana was developing, the anonymous travelers were desperate for another easy cash-grab. They created a plot to draw intrigue to the island, rather than desire. In a turn of events, Tropicana became of freakshow of sorts, claiming to be the only place on Earth inhabited by a rare species;

the Trioculus Deer.

Unbeknownst to the founders of Tropicana, the species may not be just a hoax. In its more recent days, the island once bustling with activity has become a town of mystery, localness, and community as less and less tourists swarm to sightsee.
