If you use the word “queerbaiting” about characters who are openly queer in the text, just because you’re not sure if some ship will be canon or not, you are never allowed to use words again.

We got this when TMA Jon was confirmed as canon ace and Martin as canon mlm, just because people weren’t sure if they’d actually get together.  THEY’RE STILL QUEER.  We’re getting this with a show full of pansexual vampires and a mlm whose queerness is an important part of his character background because..???  The fave ship isn’t happening fast enough or something??  Hell even as obnoxious as Disney is, it was annoying for Loki when you had two bisexual leads but accusations of queerbaiting were thrown around because, again, a ship didn’t happen (and then ignored the REAL baiting re: genderfluidity).

Calling a character queer but then never integrating that characteristic into story lines baits queers into watching but then never seeing themselves really reflected. Unless of course they manifest queerness in vivid ways without having the character in a relationship. It is possible but I’m not sure how probable.

Holyyyyyyyyy fuck well thank you quakie for being the #1 example of why this attitude is just so shitty and reductive, I guess??  You think that the only way queerness can be integrated into a storyline is through romance??  I’m guessing trans people don’t count as queer, let alone aroace people!!  You’re demonstrating this whole “the only queerness that matters is same-gender romance,” but even THEN it’s not like the only aspect of queerness that matters is romantic relationships.  

“It is possible but I’m not sure how probable” the fact you can’t even THINK of stories that matter aside from shipping–literally any story related to being trans or gender exploration or aro or ace characters or confronting religious trauma or forming communities or self-love or anything??  How about how queerness intersects with other identities and cultures, people discovering their histories??  But no, queerness is just an irrelevant detail until it becomes a canon ship, it’s ““improbable”” that someone could meaningfully integrate it unless characters are making out.

I’m aroace and agender–literally nothing in a romance will connect to me, but I have common ground with other queer people in dozens of other ways–and here you are saying that the ONLY way that queerness can be reflected in a character is the part I can’t relate to.  Even just seeing a LIVING TRANS CHARACTER means the world to me.  How deep into “shipping is all that matters” do you have to be to not even be able to hypothetically imagine that??  Fuck off.

The Teen Titans are dealing with the issues inherent with teenage superheroes showing up in war zones

This is why I love superhero comics sometimes: half the time they’re like “politics! Intense family drama! Alcoholism parallels!” and the other half they’re like “haha Doctor Doom is a baboon now” and it’s impossible to guess which one you’re gonna get ahead of time

Every coffee shop I have EVER worked in had at least one barista who would regularly change orders without the customer’s knowledge or permission, for reasons like

she doesn’t need to be dieting

Ugh, non dairy milk is so hard to steam, and drinking soy is a fad anyway

Life is short, eat the damn cheese bitch, it won’t kill you

I’d have to go open another bag of the gluten-free, and I don’t wanna walk all the way to the back room to go get it

At least once, I caught it maybe 3 seconds from disaster- someone with a life-threatening dairy allergy had ordered a soy latte. She told me at the register that it was a deadly allergy. I even wrote on the cup “ALLERGY- NO DAIRY”.

I caught the barista in question rolling her eyes and saying under her breath, “skinny bitches and their fake allergies, trying to get shit for free” (this particular coffee shop had a policy where a dairy allergy meant you didn’t pay the extra fee for non-dairy milk).

I saw the barista rinsing the dairy pitcher, put 2+2 together, and yelled out to the customer to stop her. She hadn’t started drinking yet, but she did lick the drips on the lid- she still needed her Epi-Pen and to go to the hospital.

Suffice to say that barista was fired on the spot… but there are many more people like that. Far too many.

Make the food/drinks people order, the way they fucking order them.

Even if she had just been trying to save the 50 cents…. so what?

Don’t bet people’s lives on your decisions.

I wish everyone would admit that classic literature is inherently difficult to read, and that you shouldn’t feel stupid if you don’t “get it”. Especially the dark academia/ classic lit fandoms and stuff. Like unless you have the vocabulary and pop culture knowledge of an 18th century nobleman, it’s going to be a tough read. It’ll take you longer to read; you’re not stupid if you’ve spent several months on a single book! And you don’t have to enjoy everything. It’s okay if you got bored after one chapter of Wuthering Heights, and couldn’t be bothered to read the rest. It’s okay if you want to read your favourite kids book for the 10th time instead. You’re not stupid. No piece of literature is inherently better, more “important”, more “meaningful”, or more “intellectual” than another. First and foremost, read what brings you joy.

But instead of referencing, say, the bone stealing witch or the wonderbread guy or Skyrim or loss.jpeg, classic literature assumes you’re gonna know all the stuff a Back-Then Reader would have known

No kidding, like. when you read Classic Literature™ in context of academia? We’d always get at least a week-long crash-course on the relevant historical context, social tensions, religious understandings, pop-science misconceptions, common literary tropes — And we’d get handed a selection of short stories and poems from other contemporary authors for a sense of the General Cultural Vibe — THEN we would finally read the book.

I mean, imagine trying to understand Stranger Things except you have to guess what all the Star Wars and D&D talk is about based on a single preserved reylo fic and a historical summary of the Satanic Panic. That would be really weird and confusing, right?

So if you’re reading classic lit on your own, without a passionate expert scribbling on the whiteboard to explain ancient memes and break down ye olde Discourse for you? Of course it’s gonna be hard to understand!

It’s natural to struggle, and it’s okay if that’s not your idea of fun.

Today’s classics were often yesterday’s pop culture — and it’s perfectly fine if you’d rather use your precious free time and limited energy to engage with pop culture that’s Relevant To You instead

Just to add--if you are interested in classic literature, the first book in the era you’re looking at (probably somewhere in the 1800s?) will be the weirdest. But you’ll start to recognize references, social mores, etc. more and more, until future books don’t throw you off nearly so much. 

Also: You don’t have to understand every single reference for the story to work, as long as you get the gist of it. For instance, I haven’t read any of the Gothic novels Jane Austen parodies in Northanger Abbey, but I don’t have to. All I have to understand is, “A fangirl has been reading tons of paranormal romance and dreaming up so much fic in her head that she’s completely unprepared for what real relationships are like.” This should be familiar to absolutely ANYONE on Tumblr. 

It’s tougher than contemporary stuff, yes, and it’s hardly a big deal if it’s just not your bag--but it can be a whole lot of fun. Don’t be pressured into reading what you don’t like, but also don’t be intimidated by anything that might interest you. Find your joy, wherever it lies.
