i do like the idea that when will reintroduces colleen to mack as will’s boyfriend, colleen wasn’t really… sure, at first. colleen’s looking at her son and will’s looking back with shiny eyes and a wavering voice when he goes and um, you know mack, my boyfriend. and that’s, well, not ideal. but she loves will, so she hugs him tight and turns to mack and hugs him too, and there’s something stiff and jilted in her hug with mack but it doesn’t matter right now, because she’s too busy trying to clear the radio static filling her head.
and mack isn’t dumb, he might not be as sharp as will but he knows when someone’s sizing him up, looking past the sweat and the red face and heaving breaths, when a coach is looking at him like he’s just short of something. kinda like how colleen’s looking at him now, past the nervous flush and the expensive red wine and the bouquet of flowers will helped pick out, like she’s scrutinizing, trying to see what will sees in mack. trying to find potential good enough for her son.
and while it’s not the worst reaction, it isn’t the best, either. is it kinda disheartening? sure. but mack is good with potential. he can work with it, he can make it into reality. especially for smitty, who had to take a minute to breathe before they walked up the porch steps, fingers fumbling clumsily along the rosary ring clasped around his neck.
so mack decides mid-hug, jolted in a way that doesn’t speak acceptance yet, that he’s going to win colleen over. because he knows he’s the one for will and it doesn’t matter if she makes it hard, because mack’s gonna win. after all, he’d already won over one smith, how hard is it to win over another?
