When Wounded Knee II the siege began in 1973 we (Independent Oglala Nation) stated to the world that we are not under dominion of the United States; we are not domestic dependent nations. We are original, free, inherently sovereign peoples deriving our authority from the powers of Creation. You will never stamp this out with all the institutional and material might you force on us to implement fear; it is a spiritual gift that lives in our hearts, minds and bodies that we need only recognize and nurture. Our Tree will flower again. We are not yours, we are with Creation.
I vision, dreamt about this jingle dress for almost a year before it became a dream come true. The 365 cones representing the calender months. The red and blue waterbird represents my strength, my courage, my faith and my dad’s teachings. The waterbird are my dad’s design from his jewelry, the black and green fabric were the ones my late nali gave to my parents. The red, white and blue headpiece were my late grandfathers (army veteran). The white plumes are for loved ones that passed away. The powwow fan that my dad passed down to me.
