Trump V. Trump: Jeff Sessions
Remember back when we were all a billion years younger and reading Twitter was a fun, lighthearted way to distract ourselves from the daily grind? Yeah, I don’t either. Maybe we all had a collective dream of that reality because it sure isn’t what we are experiencing on a daily basis.
But back in 2016, the Trump campaign got a surprising boost from Alabama U.S. Senator Jeffrey Beauregard Sessions III. As the first U.S. Senator to back Candidate-Trump, the support provided credibility to a campaign that up until then had been deemed a media-stunt. But when Jeff Sessions put on that MAGA baseball cap and proclaimed his approval for Candidate-Trump, all of that changed.
To say, Candidate-Trump was pleased with the endorsement, would be accurate:
What great friends! Sessions was such a loyal lapdog...I mean, supporter, that Trump tapped him for Attorney General. The confirmation hearing was brutal but Sessions appeared to ease concerns when he voluntarily explained Senator Franken, while under oath, that though he had been a Trump campaign surrogate and he didn’t hear of anyone meeting with Russians and he knew he NEVER met with Russians. Alleviated, the Senate confirmed him.
Celebrations erupted throughout the White House! Two racists who dreamed of an immigrant-free America. A match made in heaven!
Until the dam broke in March 2017 when it was discovered that Jeff Sessions met with Russians during the 2016 RNC, making his confirmation hearing statement “technically” perjury. Thanks to some fast-talking he was able to avoid perjury charges (at that point, at least) but he did what all officers of the court are supposed to do, and recused himself from the on-going Russia investigation thus putting Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in charge of that particular can of worms.
Trump immediately praised his AG for abiding by the rule of law and applauded Session’s ethical approach to the issue.
I’m kidding.
He threw a Twitter Tantrum about how unfair it was and then went surprisingly quiet on Sessions.
Four months, a FBI director firing, and a special counselor appointment later, Trump is furious that his loyal lapdog did not play the role Trump had expected him to play. By recusing himself, Sessions put the Trump administration and the Trump family in the path of intense investigation from a non-partisan, seasoned, bad-ass lawyer. This was NOT what Trump envisioned when he rewarded Sessions with AG.
Now the Russia investigation is closing in on Trump and his family. Special Counsel Mueller is investigating finances, tax returns, everything. And Trump is scared shit-less; which is more terrifying than an angry rhetoric-spouting Trump. Because at the end of the day, Trump, like all tyrants, are cowards who hide behind lackeys, stooges, and yes-men. And when cornered, those are the first to be sacrificed to protect the tyrant.
Trump began preparing the sacrificial alter during his New York Times interview last week.
Some damning words but as we know, words and interviews mean nothing in Trump-land. It isn’t until it is emblazoned via Twitter, that his thoughts are finalized for all to see.
This morning we all saw the tweet confirming what had been suspected all along. The sacrificial altar is prepared and waiting for Jeff Sessions.
