bear lowkey just pussied out and left nikki to suffer with not only his death but sarah AND ian's. id tell bear to khs but he already did so idk
on my second viewing of obsession, i had the realization that nikki’s story at the party wasn’t the movie using incest as an easy shorthand for making the audience uncomfortable or creating a general “things are off” vibe but was another way the real nikki was crying out—a metaphor for the fact that nikki, like gretel, is being made to fuck her “little brother” (bear) under duress, at the behest of an external magic (the witch’s spell in her story; obviously, bear’s wish)
so i just saw obsession
I think juliet deserves to be a little weird and off putting. As a treat
midsummer: if the feudal strictness of your home kingdom can’t give you what you want, try going on an adventure guided by magical supernatural beings
macbeth: but not like that
hamlet: if you’re in a duplicitous violent world, your king and your peers and your girlfriend may lie to you, so only follow the advice of your steadfast best friend
othello: but not like that
as you like it: if you undergo a misfortune that causes you to hate your life in your city, give yourself a makeover and run away to the woods
timon of athens: but not like that
two gents: if you’re in love in italy, you can quickly and easily communicate important information via the verona postal service
romeo and juliet: but not like that
Memorizing Shakespeare is either the easiest thing ever or staring at a single line for 40 minutes because it’s a string of words you’ve never seen in your life

i saw a production of much ado in the round last week and it reminded me how much i love live theater.
it was texas themed, everyone was accented, usually barefoot, and there was a fountain in the middle. small venue, maybe 50 seats total, but PERFECT for the show.
during the gulling scenes benedick fell into the fountain (pulling himself out and kicking his feet when beatrice bid him come to dinner) and the watchmen came out during a brief intermission to clean up the splashed water.
i love the intimacy of a small venue and the way the company took full control over the space, not a single seat had a bad view, and at some point i believe every audience member was addressed.
it was one of those shows that reminds you theater is living. breathing. art.
i feel like when i receive information that should be taken as a clear sign i don’t understand
not in the evil i don’t know when to leave people alone way
in the i don’t know if you actually want me around me please verbally confirm and sign a paper quarterly that confirms we are friends
my life is a sitcom and this episode is the filler episode that everyone loves

i feel personally attacked
are you an "out damned spot, out I say!" wife or an "out, out brief candle!" husband?
hamlet’s “i did love you once” and ophelia’s “indeed, my lord, you did make me believe so” is such an underrated gut punch. it’s betrayal it’s heartbreak it’s vulnerability it’s so over. truly no one is doing it like shakespeare
Uh what? Is this a dagger which I see before me?
Its handle is like totally pointing at me…..
Lmao I’m gonna try and clutch it 😏….
i want to make one of those videos where i record myself everytime i want something but i fear it would be repetitive.

and i think that’s pretty telling
in a recent reread of macbeth i think of the passage where lady macbeth talks about her baby, and it really just makes the contrast between her and lady macduff so much clearer
“I have given suck, and know how tender tis to love the babe that milks me. I would, while it were smiling in my face, Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums and dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this.” - act i s vii
in most of the versions i’ve seen of this scene, the conflict between the couple escalates past this, turning at line 69 (nice), lady macbeth’s famous
“We fail? But screw your courage to this sticking place and we’ll not fail”
and that doesn’t sit right with me–she gets really vulnerable, she is angry, getting increasingly frustrated, and lashed out at her husband by repeatedly attacking his masculinity before flipping the argument into something that briefly resembles empathy, before turning it into something that, in my opinion, hits them both like a dagger. pun intended. neither of the two references the absent child again in the play, and i think this is a reflection of how deep the dagger cuts.
i think it would be really cool to see a production that lets the two of them grieve and deal with the weight of this together. let the mention of the child hurt and be the point the scene shifts. it would create a more nuanced and developed relationship between them, and help to develop parallels between lady macbeth and lady macduff. who by contrast, i believe is stronger when played as if she is pregnant.
