Exactly 250 years ago today, during a particularly harsh Hampshire winter, the seventh of eight children was born into the family of a local clergyman. The name of George and Cassandra's daughter was not officially recorded until the following April, owing to the conditions... but from this obscure start, she would grow up to become one of the most beloved authors of all time. So universally read, that her works have never been out of print; a phenomenally talented pioneer who, despite such scant formal education, used her incredible powers of observation and understanding of the various quirks of human nature to bring to life, as she sat at her twelve sided writing desk, a cast of captivating characters which continue to delight.
It was at this desk, in the cottage which her brother had procured for her, that she wove intricate story threads that ensure her novels are endlessly readable and timeless... hence why they are still being enjoyed and discussed after so much time has elapsed.
Although, in so many ways, she remains an enigma, with so little facts known about her life... we all feel like we 'know' her and have an idea of who Jane Austen is in our heads. That speaks volumes about her talent.
Our world is barely recognisable to the one she inhabited, but Jane Austen captured the fundamental essence of human nature in the writing she managed over the course of her tragically short life, and that is why we continue to delight in her works. In that sense, she lives forever.
Happy 250th Birthday, Jane. Thank you for all of the delight you've brought to successive generations of readers from all walks of life. I cannot imagine my life without your novels... and I'm certainly glad that I don't have to!

I love how in pride and prejudice (1995) they just place random scenes of Darcy having an existential crisis throughout the series.

I [27 M] have a massive crush on this girl [21 F] but hate her family. I told her that I’d still like to marry her despite her poverty and how annoying I found her mother & sisters. But she said that I was ‘the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed upon to marry’!! AITA?

They all came to Heliogabalus’ parties, the ancient equivalent of Conan Grey, a wicked party-animal and an angel with horns with a fine taste for flowers. Once a year he howled on top of his empire so everyone could hear: « Come and rejoice, my friends! It is the only week of the year where the beautifuls aren’t scorning the uglies, for all of you are covered with the finest rose petals! » Of course they all lacked the ability to take maniac selfies but Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Cole Thomas immortalized one of these feasts; they were two painters in love but who never dared in their lifetime tell each other for they were too afraid to be laughed at. Everyone would come a long way just to bathe in roses; some drowned in petals, drunk, sank there alone before they could make a new friend. Egor clearly had enough and asked for it all to stop, a protective hand above his hangover head on the 2nd day, feeling like someone took his soul away. Nerds, prom queens, geeks, ferret lovers, people who called themselves “normal”, all showed up and reunited in peace, days and nights, for this special week once a year. A real mood for many present-day citizens.
