So, further research into MDZS and The Untamed was done, and I learnt a very interesting fact: the Lan headbands represent restraint. Second thing while watching The Untamed was that Lan Xichen (who I relate to on so many levels, the man has a face built for customer service) and Nie Mingjue (who I also relate, because anger issues) have the ultimate bromance.

And then, the thought that appeared to me in the midst of a Kahlua/coffee haze:

Lan disciples who are about to get into fights take of their forehead ribbons, partially as a safety measure, but also as a warning that shit is about to go down. (Lan Wangji has lost over twenty forehead ribbons this way whenever somebody badmouthed his mother or his brother).
