5 Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

This year is not what any of us would have predicted and is likely taking a larger toll on our mental health than we would care to admit. So, today let’s take some time to check in with ourselves and see if there’s anything we could be doing a little bit better to take care of ourself. Let’s face it, we only have one body and one chance to treat it well. That’s why we’re sharing five ways to improve your mental health during a global pandemic, or really anytime at all.

1 - Prioritize Sleep:

Sleep is crucial to our mental and physical health. We don’t all need a lot of sleep but we do need to prioritize a few hours of deep restful REM sleep. A few ways to do this are cutting out caffeine at a certain time in the afternoon, eat a balanced diet and keep your bedroom dark, quiet and cool.

2 - Incorporate Exercise:

There are so many benefits to exercise and one of them is its effect on your mental health. When you work out your body releases endorphins which makes you feel good and happier. 3 - Get Creative:

Sometimes as adults we forget we’re allowed to have fun too. Think about the last time you did something creative just for fun. Was it painting, crafting, cooking or maybe writing? Set aside some time to simply get creative. This will help you get out of your head and remove yourself from your stress even if it is just for an hour.

4 - Practice Mindfulness:

I’m sure you’re aware of the concept of “being present,” and have had moments in your life you remember feeling fully present. Well, the ability to experience that has a lot to do with mindfulness, and a higher level of our awareness that comes with practice. Practicing mindfulness has many benefits and one of them is its impact on our mental health. Want to give it a try?

WHAT WE’RE MAKING || MEMORIAL WEEKEND 2020

Long weekends call for food, family time, and relaxation. But, it also means you have more mouths to feed. We have rounded up 3 creative, delicious recipes that will impress your crowd this Memorial Weekend. 

Recipes Included:

1. Main: Cocoa Cola Baby Back Ribs by Andrea’s Cooktales

2. Side: Watermelon Serrano Squares by Caramelized

3. Appetizer: Heirloom Tomato and Avocado Salsa with Blue Corn Chips by Elizabeth Heiskell 

Cocoa Cola Baby Back Ribs by Andrea’s Cooktales

4 servings

2 racks baby back ribs 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 2 tablespoons kosher salt 2 teaspoons liquid smoke 2 teaspoons allspice 1 teaspoon smoked paprika ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 ½ cups regular cola 4 medium onions - roughly chopped into large pieces 1 cup good-quality barbecue sauce

Rinse the ribs and pat dry with paper towels. In a small bowl, mix together the cocoa, brown sugar, salt, liquid smoke, allspice, paprika, and pepper. Rub the mixture onto the ribs and press to adhere. Cover the ribs and refrigerate for a few hours or overnight.

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Prep two baking pans by pouring ¾ cup of cola into each pan. Place the chopped onions over the cola and place the ribs on top of the onions. Cover the pan tightly with foil. Bake for 2 ½ to 3 hours, or until meat is tender and almost falling off the bone. I like my ribs to still have substance to them – not quite falling off the bone.

Using tongs, move the ribs to a baking sheet lined with foil. Strain the onions from the cola. Reserve ¼ cup of the cola and mix with the barbecue sauce. Brush a thick layer of the sauce onto the ribs. Put the ribs back in the oven for 20 minutes. Serve with the extra cola-barbecue sauce on the side.

Watermelon Serrano Squares by Cara Greenstein 

Serves 12 

1/2 large watermelon, cubed 1 4-ounce package serrano ham, torn into small pieces 1 serrano pepper, thinly sliced (almost shaved) Morton mediterranean sea salt, to garnish Balsamic reduction, to garnish

1. Line watermelon cubes on a serving dish. Effortlessly pinch a piece of serrano atop each watermelon. Top with a serrano slice.

2. Drizzle with balsamic reduction and sprinkle with sea salt to bring out the flavors. Serve immediately or chill until ready!

Heirloom Tomato and Avocado Salsa with Blue Corn Chips by Elizabeth Heiskell

Serves 8

1 1/2 pounds heirloom tomatoes, small diced (about 3 1/4 cups)

3/4 cup finely chopped red onion (from 1 small onion)

2 ripe avocados, peeled, pitted, and diced (about 2 cups)

1 jalapeño chile, seeded and finely chopped (about 3 teaspoons)

1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro

1/4 cup fresh lime juice (from 2 limes)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Cilantro leaves (optional)

Blue corn tortilla chips

Gently toss together the tomatoes, red onion, avocados, jalapeño, chopped cilantro, lime juice, olive oil, salt, cumin, and black pepper in a medium bowl. Garnish with cilantro leaves, if desired. Serve with tortilla chips.

What We’re Making: Andrea’s Cooktales Cream Taco Dip

We are beyond thrilled to have Andrea LeTard of Andrea’s Cooktales in the next volume of The Scout Guide Memphis & Oxford. We want to introduce her by  sharing a recipe from her cookbook, Andrea’s Cooktales , that is perfect for celebrating Cinco De Mayo. Your whole family won’t be able to stop eating this Cream Taco Dip! Here is how to make it:

Andrea’s Cooktales Cream Taco Dip

Serves a Very Large Group (perfect for leftovers, or cut in half since not many parties are happening at this time)

Ingredients

1 lb chorizo

1 10 oz can Rotel

1 15 oz can chili no beans

1 15 oz can ranch style beans

1 large package Velveeta cheese

1 cup heavy whipping cream

Directions:

1. In a large pot or dutch oven, cook the chorizo over medium heat until done, breaking up the meat into small pieces as it cooks. Drain the fat from the pot.

2. Pour in the Rotel, chili, ranch style beans, and stir together. Cube the Velveeta and add to the pot. Stir everything together until melted.

3. Add the heavy whipping cream and stir to combine. Let the dip heat completely and serve with tortilla chips.

1. Take all measurements.

To begin the Stantt shirt customization process, James Davis takes all measurements, which allows them to help you find the perfect fit for your body. Do your shirts tend to be too short or too long for your arms? This won't happen at James Davis! 

2. Try on one of the 150 samples of Stantt shirts. 

The James Davis team will help you find the samples that work best for your measurements so you can try on and see how you like the fit.

3. Pick your favorite fabrics.

Now, the fun truly begins! There are 150 fabrics to choose from, and every season there are 60 new fabrics and patterns released. 

4.Add your pesonal touch.

How to Create a Cozy Retreat in Your Own Home - Without Leaving the House

We connected with Lindsey Black of Lindsey Black Interiors to hear her expert advice on ways we can create a comfortable retreat in our own home. The Master Bedroom, which Lindsey says is usually her clients’ lowest priority when decorating their home, is the BEST place to start. Your bedroom might tend to be a place where you fold your laundry; and we all know everyone has THAT chair that gets piled up with clothes, but now more than ever, it is nice to have a cozy and decluttered space to retreat to for some shut eye and quiet time.

Keep reading to learn Lindsey’s easy ways to up the comfort level of your room without having to leave your home or spend and money!

1. Declutter. 

Clean up your room and remove everything that doesn’t belong (why oh why is there a PJ Mask Action Figure hiding under my nightstand!?). Clean off that chair that is a collector of clothes, and actually use the chair for some light reading with a glass of wine after the kids are asleep. 

2. Make your bed. 

It sounds so simple, but I know I'm guilty of leaving the bed disheveled as I am rushing to get out of the house on a normal work day. Now that I am home nearly all day, it's so nice to walk into the room and have the bed made. Even if it isn't perfectly styled with decorative pillows, just having the blankets tucked in and the pillows straightened can make the room feel so much more peaceful.

3. Shop your house. 

Take a walk around your house to find pictures or accessories you can re-purpose in the room. You probably have some artwork and styling accessories stored in a closet, or maybe some bookshelves that could use some editing. Take the items you find, and use them to style your dresser and nightstands, and hang the artwork/photos on your walls.

4. Add fresh greenery/flowers. 

With spring fast approaching, many of the plants in your yard have probably started to bloom. Cut some of the stems and put them in a vase on your dresser or nightstand. They don't have to include flowers, fresh greenery and branches can be just as pretty and bring life to the room.

5 Tips for Remodeling Bliss with Ryan Anderson of RKA Construction

What is it that makes a house a home? You fill it with love and life. Design is a reflection of those things. Remodeling is a chance to bring more ‘you’ into your home transforming it from a nice place to lay your head into your little oasis away from the world.

Though it’s definitely an exciting time, it can be overwhelming to manage a remodel. Where do you find contractors? How do you decide which contractors to work with? What’s a fair price?

A little guidance can go a long way. RKA provided 5 top tips for remodeling bliss. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list. Rather a starting point to give you the best beginning for your remodeling journey.

1. Hire a design professional. Architects, designers, and other contractors are the heartbeat of the remodeling machine. They’re critical to the success of any home addition or remodel and they ensure that your vision for the project is brought to life while keeping in mind factors such as safety, efficiency, and functionality.

A fly-by-night contractor likely won’t have the same technological tools as professionals. Design documents mean better information for the builder which leads to more accurate pricing and reduced construction time.

2. Interview multiple contractors. Yes, I’m sure your cousin’s best friend has tons of experience and he might do a great job, but can he back that glowing recommendation up with insurance, a portfolio, or proper licensing? Likely not.

Don’t just accept what the first contractor says. RKA recommended interviewing at least 2 contractors and don’t forget to ask for references in addition to ensuring they have the proper insurance and licensing.

While you do want to get multiple estimates, you don’t want to choose on price alone because the finish level and project scope can vary widely between contractors. Besides, often, what you pay for is what you get.  Choose a contractor who is 100% transparent and respects your voice in the process.

3. Encourage regular communication. So many frustrations during construction are the result of poor communication.

And this goes both ways! While it’s important to ensure your contractor provides you with consistent communication regarding the schedule and needs, you also want to communicate your expectations. After all, if your contractor isn’t aware of your expectations, they may not be met. Likewise, if you aren’t providing all of the necessary information, they won’t be able to successfully complete your project.

4. Be patient and flexible. Things happen. Permits need to be filed, rain delays work, unforeseen challenges create unforeseen costs. Construction isn’t an exact science. Every project is different and, more often than not, you’ll get thrown a curveball. A little flexibility and understanding will serve you well here.

Likewise, builders have to rely on people to complete your project. Inevitably, some people will get sick or produce subpar work. You have to trust that your contractor will address and correct any issues that arise. Plus, a little patience and some wine.

5. Enjoy the process!  There will be challenges, sure, and construction can be an inconvenience, but this should be fun! It’s pretty exciting to watch the journey of your home’s transformation.

So many people never get to experience the magic of designing their home to be exactly what they want. Remember this and try to enjoy the process and keep a positive attitude.

Member Spotlight: Sophie Sandlin Raines of Community Mortgage

Sophie didn't always know she would be a Mortgage Loan Specialist for her career, but she grew to love the industry, especially after realizing how many amazing people she gets to meet every day. Read more about the girl in the (very cute) purple pantsuit below.

1. Where are you from? 

I was born in Memphis, we moved to the Country in Oxford MS when I was 3, and I spent a good part of my childhood there until we moved back to Memphis when I was in 5th Grade. But we still have our farm in Oxford! 

2. How did you get involved in the Mortgage Loan business? 

My dad, Pat Sandlin, founded Community Mortgage in 1987 and is still the President and CEO today ( My Boss man lol) – you could say I was destined to end up here!

3. Did you always know you wanted to do this for your career?

So actually no.. I did always think my dad was this super cool businessman, but I never truly ever understood what he did. As I got older and I learned more and more about the industry, I did begin to develop a love for it. It is so much more than crunching numbers and finance and more about the amazing people we get to help and meet along the way. I have always been a people person so once I learned the business I knew I was in the perfect spot.

4. What is your go-to hang out spot in Memphis? 

My husband, Hunter, and I love anything on South Main - breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, they have it all! 

5. What is something most people don’t know about you? 

Growing up my whole family showed horses, and I still ride today! The barn is my 100% total therapy and Happy place.

5. What is one piece of advice you would give someone needing a Mortgage? 

It is hard to give just one, but I would say, don’t hesitate because you THINK you may not qualify… there are so many down payment options and special programs out there that most people are pleasantly surprised when they realize they are able to qualify! I talk to first time home buyers all the time that think they need to put 20% down and you don’t! Get pre-qualified before you start looking so you know what your true budget is, and you are fully prepared to make an offer when your dream house comes along!

DIVE IN: ERIC GOODE DESIGNS AND BUILDS ONE-OF-A-KIND GEOTHERMAL POOL

Designing the perfect pool for your home is a skill that takes years to master. Thankfully, Eric Goode of Eric Goode Pools not only understands that necessary level of precision and excellence, but he is able to consistently offer it to homeowners within Memphis, Oxford, and beyond, who want only the best outdoor experiences for their homes. 

The outdoor oases that Goode curates and builds are each individual to the space and unique in purpose, design and technology. Essentially, his ability to take the client’s visions from the consultations and manifest them in real-life is truly admirable. 

Goode has been in the pool industry since 1984, primarily on the supply-side, where he was able to meet with pool manufacturers from all over the globe.

"Having that global network is a huge advantage in keeping on the cutting-edge aspect of our industry.”

For this specific project, Goode worked with Barry Yoakum, founding partner at Archimania, one of the Top 10 Architectural Firms in the country. About this project, Goode said:

“I was initially just as excited to work with this particular architect as much as I was to build his pool. I knew working with Barry was going to be a ride. What we didn’t know is that it would be almost 8 years in the making and completely one-of-a-kind pool." 

"This one-of-a-kind pool is a perfect fusion of materials, features and design, which ebbed and flowed with the changes."

 Likewise, Goode mentioned that one of the changes led to them becoming a certified installer of "the ultimate pool surface," a "Phthalate-free" lifetime pool finish.  

Clearly, this pool is fabulous and sustainable. When asked about the technological aspects of the project, Goode explained:

“The home is set to be completely off the grid. Solar, rainwater basins, geothermal heat. In fact, we have a geothermal loop going through the floor of the pool. The pool water is heated by this process. The pool has an in-floor circulation and debris-removal system with a lifetime warranty from A & A Manufacturing in Phoenix. It cleans as it circulates. It also generates its own chlorine and has a UV system that kills bacteria on contact. There’s a German engineered swim jet on one end. There were a lot of great folks working in that hole. I could go on. But will stop.”

Finally, we asked Goode whether he had any advice for those who are thinking about installing a pool for their home. He replied, “My advice would be build it to last—it will be a lot less hassle 10 or 20 years down the road. Our goal is to build as maintenance-free of a pool as you can have. It doesn’t eliminate having a pool guy as much as eliminates a lot of headaches associated with pools.”
