Bloom 2019: For New and Expected Moms May 4

Bloom is a celebration of mother happening in 50+ other cities.  In Miami the Miami’s Mom Blog is hosting at Mercy Hospital from 9-4 pm.  Bloom is a kid-free event with the exception of nursing infants and is all about taking a morning off and getting away from the routine for a celebration that is all about YOU.  Guests will enjoy pampering, interacting with other local moms and engaging with vendors relevant to motherhood.  Tickets are $30 and VIP Swag tickets are $45. The Lion King at the Arsht Center May 8-26th

New Times Brew at the Zoo: May 11

Throw a few cold ones back and enjoy live music at the Miami New Times’ and Zoo Miami’s annual BREW AT THE ZOO. From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., sample more than 100 kinds of beer from all around the world. Treat Mom to a Garden Brunch at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden: May 12

There’s nothing more elegant than a delicious brunch in the garden, at a beautifully set table with mom. The Shops of Merrick Village and  the Coral Gables Community Foundation will present the first-ever “Shop & Stroll,” a progressive evening of shopping with sips, specials and surprises at popular retailers .  The event at Shops at Merrick Park (358 San Lorenzo Ave.) will benefit Beaux Arts, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, The Motivational Edge, Junior League of Miami and Neighbors for Neighbors, in addition to co-presenter the Coral Gables Community Foundation. Over 50 booths of colorful blooms at this 3-day event which features the largest annual orchid show in the country.

SURFSIDE’S SECOND ANNUAL PADDLETOPIA FESTIVAL

MAY 18-19 2019, 96th Street Park at 9580 Bay Drive Surfside

This groovy two-day affair will transform the 96th Street waterfront park in Miami’s Uptown Beachtown into a weekend-long festival with paddle boarding, wellness brands, fitness demos, healthy snacks and family activities.

Paddletopia will feature stand-up paddle boarding along the intracoastal including complimentary paddle boards in partnership with Miami Beach Paddle Board and kayaks available to the public at a pop-up dock on the waterway bordering the park.

There will be a wellness expo with fitness classes and family boot camp, eco-fashion shows, live DJ, “chill out” lounges and much more. Stay fueled with healthy fare available for purchase from a retrofitted vintage trailer, as well as free smoothie and juice samples and more.

Scouted Picks for St. Patrick’s Day in Miami 2019

Ftitz and Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables  is hosting their 7th annual St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Party. With free admission the party has already started. It is 4 days of live music, beer and Irish food on the Bierhaus plaza through the end of day Sunday, March 17th.

St. Pat’s Wynwood Food trucks, green beer and live music.  There is a fun 2-day St. Patrick’s Day Party in Wynwood on March 16-17th complete with a pot-of-gold ball pit!.

Paddy’s Pub Day The second annual party at Churchill’s Pub in Little Haiti that is a nod to the Irish Pub on the show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia on Sunday March 17th, 5 pm- close.  This party is free admisison with $3 Paddy’s Whiskey and $4 Stella all day.  There will be great live music from Jonny Two Chords, Deux Pooch Bear, Matchstick Johnny and Jahniration Band.  And of course, there will be an “it’s Always Sunny” marathon on the big screen.

TSG Miami Scouted February 2019 Calendar

February may be the shortest month on the calendar but it rivals all others as the busiest in Miami.  From art to concerts to theater to yachts, there is so much to do this month in our tropical paradise.  

January 26- February 20th, Kips Bay Show House, 6215 South Flagler, West Palm Beach, FL, 33405.  YES! That says West Palm Beach.  It’s not in Miami, but I didn’t want you to miss out… reviews are in and it is worth the drive (or train ride on the Bright Line!) Now in its second year, the Show House is situated in the historic district of West Palm Beach and show case the work of approximately 20 designers.

February 9 9:00-4:00:  Coral Gables Kitchen Tour. Get inspired as you go inside Coral Gables’ most beautiful kitchens, taste samples from the city’s best restaurants and shop from local merchants.  The 10th Annual Tour of Kitchens presented by Infiniti of Coral Gables, is a self-guided tour of Coral Gables’ most impressive private residence kitchens.  Tickets are $75  and proceeds benefit the Coral Gables Community Foundation and the Culinary Arts Fund, which provides support and scholarships for the Culinary Arts Program at Coral Gables Senior High School.

February 14, 5:30- 9:30 Valentine's Day Concert at Fairchild featuring Jarred Lawson.  Celebrate this special day under the stars with the sounds of this renowned Jazz vocalist who will enchant the crowd with original and well known romantic pieces creating an intimate and unforgettable evening.

February 14-18:  The MIAMI INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW returns to Miami Marine Stadium for this 5 day event.   Whether you have big bucks or just big dreams, the boat show is the place to check out powerboats, sailboats, yachts, classic models, and antiques, all on display from the biggest brands. Expect the latest and greatest technology and toys for those who live the boating life.  Tickets cost $100 for a 5 day pass, $45 for a 2 day pass, $40 for premiere day, and $25 for single-day adult general admission; kids 15 and younger get in free. Catch a water taxi from one of four locations including the W Hotel, Hyatt Regency Miami, Bayfront Park or American Airlines Marina.

February 15-17: WATCHES AND WONDERS in Miami Design District.  After a hugely successful debut that attracted over 20,000 attendees in 2018, Watches & Wonders Miami returns. The event expands from 21 to 28 brands showing their creations at this second edition, which is again led by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie in partnership with the Miami Design District. Fine watchmaking, high jewelry, beautiful vintage cars and sumptuous yachts combine for a weekend of luxury and a unique immersion into a world of excellence.

February 15-17, III Points Music Festival is an alternative music festival that continues to grow in size and scope. This year’s headliners include SZA, Tyler the Creator, A$AP Rocky and Erykah Badu. Reflective of Miami’s diversity, the festival will include more than 100 performers on six stages at the 100,000-square-foot Mana Wynwood in the Wynwood Arts District. Other highlights include immersive art installations, panels, master classes and more. Gates open at 5 p.m. and music goes until 5 a.m. Three-day general admission tickets start at $205.

February 16-18:  The COCONUT GROVE ARTS FESTIVAL presented by Terra features treasures from over 360 artists and craftsmen who hail from Florida to Washington. You can check out original art, partake in the Culinary Village, listen to live tunes and maybe head home with a masterpiece or two. The festival runs 10 AM to 6PM and is located on McFarlane Road, South Bayshore Drive, and Pan American Drive in Coconut Grove. General admission costs $12 per day and $5 for residents of the zip code 33133.

February 20-24th: The Food Network & Cooking Channel SOUTH FLORIDA WINE AND FOOD FEST is a national, star-studded, five-day destination event showcasing the talents of the world’s most renowned wine and spirits producers, chefs and culinary personalities. Honestly, there is so much GOOD STUFF, that I got a little overwhelmed trying to pick out a few to suggest to you! I need you to go look at the list of events and pick the one that appeals… there is something for everyone!  Events vary from daily seminars to intimate dinners and tickets sell out fast.

TSG Miami Members Partnership During Miami Art Week

The Scout Guide Miami’s founding member, Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables loves community and art – and Art Basel season provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate both at a special event benefitting one of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.  The Scout Guide Miami’s featured artists displayed some of their finest work in the dealership’s beautiful showroom and next to a brand new 2019 Mercedes-Benz SL that was filled with  unwrapped toys and delivered to Niklaus Children’s Hospital for sick children in the hospital on Christmas Day.

Guests browsed the expansive art show curated by Lowe Art Museum director Jill Deupi while enjoying music, cocktails, and hors-d'oeuvres. A portion of the bar was provided by sponsor Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Wheatley Vodka.

We were excited to have the opportunity to showcase our TSG Miami artists beyond the pages of our book.   There is so much artistic talent in Miami!  While visiting artists participating in Art Basel are remarkable, so too are many that live in South Florida.

“While many are headed to Wynwood and Miami Beach to see amazing art, we are offering an opportunity to participate in Miami Art Week right here in Coral Gables,” said Denie Harris, marketing director at Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables.

The evening’s participating artists included Johanna Boccardo, Carola Bravo, Klara Chavarria, Liv Dockerty, Jamie Eroncig Jones, and Camilla Webster.

TSG Miami Scouted Calendar/ January 2019

January 6-13: Approximately 170 young artists between the ages of 15 and 18 years will come to Miami to take part in the life-changing experience of National Young Arts Week  now in its 38th year.  During the weeklong intensive, participants across 10 disciplines take master classes and workshops with internationally renowned leaders in their field such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Sarah Brightman, Plácido Domingo, Frank Gehry, Jeff Koons, Wynton Marsalis, Rebecca Walker and Carrie Mae Weems, among others.  Finalists will share their work with the public through performances, readings, exhibitions and screenings on the YoungArts campus and New World Center. That means we get to go see these national stars in the making! Sooo cool! Check the website for schedule of events that begin on Monday January 7, 2019 at the New World Center, 500 17th Street, Miami Beach.

January 8:  Slow Food Miami hosts their first Snail Social of 2019 from 6-8 pm at Books and Books new location in Coconut Grove at 3409 Main Highway.  Chef Allen Susser, a leader in Miami’s farm-to-table movement will give us a taste of the café’s menu while we sip on a complimentary glass of organic wine. January 12-13: Held each year on the lush grounds of the University of Miami, the 68th Annual Beaux Arts Festival of Art will feature over 220 fine art exhibitors.  The festival also offers live music and family entertainment in the Mainstage tent,  a Family Fun Zone and a variety of dining options, making this event ideal not just for art enthusiasts but for families as well.   Festival visitors will also enjoy the 18th Annual Student Artist Showcase, featuring more than 100 pieces from talented Miami-Dade middle and high school students, which judges narrow down from 450 submissions. The showcase will be on display inside the Lowe Art Museum throughout the weekend.  See the Beaux Arts Festival of Art program, here with all of the details  New this year, Beaux Arts will award a “People’s Choice Award” so be sure to vote for your favorite artist during your visit. The festival is open from 10 am- 5 pm each day and admission is FREE.

January 25-27: The 13th Annual International Chocolate Festival at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.  Indulge in chocolate delicacies during the season's most delicious event.  Enjoy fine chocolate samples from artisan chocolatiers, lectures on chocolate making and demonstrations from Miami's master chefs and chocolatiers!

January 27:  The 17th Annual Fitbit Miami Marathon and Half Marathon. Join over 25,000 runners and walkers as they weave through scenic neighborhoods of Miami Beach and through downtown including over 20 entertainment stations along the way. Register here 

January 31: Ken Downing, Neiman Marcus VP and Fashion Director, returns to South Florida again for the 8th Annual Splendor in the Garden Luncheon and Fashion Show at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.  The event which features a champagne reception and luncheon will honor leading members of the South Florida community while raising money for Fairchild’s numerous programs in conservation, science, children’s education and horticulture.

MIAMI ART WEEk 2018

 It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  Miami Art Week 2018 is almost here. From December 4th through December 9th, Miami will be taken over by art collectors, gallerists, artists and celebs for the 17th installation of Art Basel Miami Beach.  With the addition of 15+ satellite fairs and art related events, it is an overwhelming territory to cover in just 6 short days.  As such, we’ve put together a quick guide to help you tackle the week.  

If you have one day or if it’s your first time, you must see Art Basel  at the newly renovated Miami Beach Convention Center.  This year’s event is set to take place December 6th-9th.  Grab a glass of champagne and peruse 267 of the world's leading modern and contemporary art galleries displaying premier paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, prints, photography, film, video, and digital art by over 4,000 artists.   This show is like going to one of the world’s finest art museums.  The most recognizable artists, such as Twombley, Calder, Basquiat, and Bourgeois, are usually at the front of the show while the newer “up and coming” artists are towards the back.  The added twist that everything is for sale lends a real air of excitement to the room.  In 2017 Art Basel offered over $3.5 billion in art for sale.  In addition, there is great people watching between the celeb sightings and general audience attire.  Spotted last year were Drake, 50 Cent, Jaime King, Cindy Crawford and Val Kilmer to name a few.  The hot ticket is the Preview party on Wednesday night, but best of luck getting in to this invitation-only event.  The fair opens to the public Thursday, December 6th at 3 PM.  Tickets are $50 online, $60 onsite.

If you have an extra day or are feeling like getting an ambitious start to Miami Art Week, ART MIAMI and CONTEXT  open to the public on Wednesday, December 5th at 11AM.  Located on the mainland at One Herald Plaza between the Venetian and MacArthur Causeways, Art Miami showcases significant works of art from 20th and 21st century artists.  Here you can see a few of the high end pieces that you may find at Art Basel - works by Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein or Helen Frankenthaler to name a few - but will also see more works of young, emerging artists and galleries.  Sister fair, CONTEXT, highlights newer and cutting edge artists.  Together, these fairs are very manageable and parking is easier than on the beach.  Much of the art is priced a little lower, starting in the $25,000 range.  Plan to spend about 4-5 hours between the two tents.  One day passes are $55.

Feel like adding a third or fourth day to your Art Week?  There is definitely more to be seen.  Head back to the beach to take in ART PULSE,  UNTITLED , SCOPE MIAMI BEACH , and SUPERFINE   .  ART PULSE opens to the public on December 6th at its beachfront location at 4601 Collins Avenue.  I’ve ‘discovered’ some of my favorite artists here including Jordi Alcaraz and Eva Sussman.  You can pick up a piece of art here starting around $7,000.  Tickets are $25.  UNTITLED, located between Ocean Drive and 12th Street, opens December 5th.  Tickets are $35.  In addition to contemporary art, visitors to Untitled can see an ongoing performance of #NeverNotWorking which invites everyone to assess their privilege by highlighting the plight of domestic and service workers in the United States. .  Then a little further South, Scope Miami Beach enters its 18th year and celebrates international emerging contemporary art and multi-disciplinary creative programming.  This fair is located at 801 Ocean Drive and opens to the public on December 5th at 11AM.  Tickets are $40.  Just next door at the Art Deco Welcome Center is SUPERFINE!  Open December 5th-9th, SUPERFINE! features artwork that is affordable and representative of the local art scene.  Tickets are $8-$10 depending on day.

Looking for the Next Big Thing?  Then you must check out NADA .  The 16th edition of this fair will feature over 124 galleries and will take place from December 6th-9th at the Ice Palace Studios.  NADA was founded in 2002 and is is dedicated to showcasing new art and to celebrating the rising talents from around the globe.  Tickets are $20.

DESIGN MIAMI  opens December 5th.  This fair features museum quality exhibitions pertaining to interior design.  Don’t miss this year’s commissioned piece by contemporary artist Pedro Reyes and fashion designer Carla Fernández which will feature curved steel walls and a map that shows the names of the more than 300 original settlements on pre-Columbian Americas.  Design Miami is located next to Art Basel at Meridian Avenue and 19th Street.  Admission is $27 online, $32 onsite.

I love works on paper and if you do too, don’t miss INK MIAMI .  This fair is unique among Miami’s fairs for its focus on modern and contemporary works on paper by internationally renowned artists.  The Old Print Shop, Tandem Press and Durham Press are a few favorites.  INK Miami is located at the Suites of Dorchester, two blocks north of 17th, and opens on December 5th at 9AM.  Admission is FREE.  While you are there, travel 3 blocks south and check out AQUA ART MIAMI  Featuring 52 galleries from around the world, this fair opens December 6th at 12PM and is located at 1530 Collins Avenue.  Admission is $25.

Spectrum Miami  and RED DOT  will return to Wynwood this year with shows focusing on certain themes.  Spectrum features an international slate of artists and galleries as well as five days filled with Art Labs, Art Talks, Meet the Artist sessions, music, and entertainment.  This year’s curatorial theme is Allure which will be demonstrated through atmospheric abstracts, provocative photographs and seductive sculptures.  Sister fair, Red Dot, showcases over 75 galleries who will be curating around this year’s theme, Illuminate.  These fairs, located at Mana Wynwood, run December 6th-9th.  Admission is $25.

All of these fairs have opening night previews.  If you have a friend in the know, try to score an invite as these times can be far less crowded. Otherwise, here is a suggested schedule for the general public days:

Wednesday, December 5

ART MIAMI + ART CONTEXT at 1PM.  Check out works by TSG Miami featured artist, Carola Bravo at Bernice Steinbaum Gallery’s booth at Art Miami.  End the day with a glass of sparkling rose and lobster deviled eggs at Migonette.

Thursday, December 6

SPECTRUM + RED DOT at 1PM.  Refuel with a Taco Alambre at Coyo Taco and a coffee from neighboring Panther Coffee and head south to NADA around 5:00PM.  Finish the day with drinks and gorgeous views at Cipriani’s when the fair closes around 7PM.  

Friday, December 7

DESIGN MIAMI at 11AM followed by ART BASEL at 3PM.  Grab lunch at the Garden Cafe by Michelle Bernstein, located at the adjacent Miami Botanical Garden, and pop into INK MIAMI in between.

Saturday, December 8

ART PULSE at 10AM + UNTITLED at 2PM + SCOPE MIAMI + SUPERFINE!.  Slip out the back of Art Pulse and take the boardwalk to La Côte at the Fountainbleau for lunch with a beach view.  Head south to Ocean Drive for the remaining 3 fairs.  You can catch up with TSG Miami featured artist, Jamie Jones, at Superfine! (Booth B04.)  Then, finish the day with the late night Happy Hour at The Upland.  We recommend an Upland Old Fashioned and Crispy Duck Wings to nibble on!

Sunday, December 9

Revisit your favorite fair from the week and make a last minute deal on a piece before the gallery packs it up!  There are also many other events hosted by individual galleries and museums.  TSG Miami featured artist, Liv Dockerty will have a pop gallery in Coral Gables at 279 Giralda Avenue while Johanna Boccardo will be part of a group show titled “Mis-placed” at Collective 62.

September 2018 Miami Calendar

September 7th Ghost Tour at Deering Estate:Starting this month, we can learn about sightings and paranormal experiences of Miami’s most haunted property with P.R.I.S.M. (Paranormal Research & Investigative Studies).  The Deering Estate offers a variety of ghost tours, paranormal investigations, and overnight experiences.

The first Ghost tour will be Friday, September 7th from 8- 10 p.m., $30 per person.  Additional dates for this guided tour are 9/21/18, 9/28, 10/3 and 10/24.

Want more? Beginning October 20th there are several dates on the calendar that you can visit with the ghosts after hours… I mean this is better than a slumber party with a ouiji board! From 10 pm- 2 am A group of volunteer Paranormal Investigators will take guests to the most active locations on the Estate where you can investigate and attempt communication with the spirits that roam in the historic houses and main grounds. Equipment used to detect spectral presences – such as pendulums, dowsing rods, EMF meters, voice recorders and cameras are welcome! This night will cost $65/person. Check website for dates and ticket purchasing information.

September 8th, ArtsLaunch 2018, Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 10:00 a.m. This free party marks the opening of public ticket sales for more than 170 Arsht programs—purchasable with no handling fees on this day only. Stay for the author conversations, chef demos, workshops and tours, with 100 arts organizations touting their lineups at the Community Village. Budding performers can participate in dance classes, a cappella singing and much more. Brief musical showcases take place throughout the day (10:30am–5:30pm) inside the Ziff Ballet Opera House and Knight Concert Hall’s green rooms. September 8, 2018: Paul Simon’s Farewell Tour at the BB&T Center.  This tour is wrapping up and reports from the rest of his show is that he is singing ALL OF MY FAVORITE Paul Simon songs: “Graceland,” “Homeward Bound,”  “Mrs. Robinson,” ,“Me and Julio Down by the School Yard.”  I think we have to venture to Sunrise for this one! September 15, 2018, 8 p.m. Sting and Shaggy 44/876 Tour: The Filmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre.  This unlikely duo collaborated to produce an album that has Jamaican undertones and includes Sting classics like, “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” and “Message in a Bottle.”  I’m just sad it doesn’t include my favorite Shaggy song “It Wasn’t Me.” Good News! Tickets are still available.  Bad News? They are almost $170/per person for General Admission.  I say? Still worth it! I feel like this might be EVEN BETTER than Martha and Snoop! September 20-22: Miami Fashion Film Festival, Miami Beach. Bringing attention to the historical interdependence between art and fashion and its influences, the Miami Fashion Film Festival adds to the “fashion is art” narrative with local and international films that highlight fashion design through storytelling, graphics, sound, and motion, in real and digitally imagined environments.  The weekend will include screenings, workshops for budding film makers, panels and parties.  Check out their website for all of the details here.

September 22nd, A Conversation with Al Pacino. Location  the Filmore Jackie Gleason Theatre.  The star of, arguably, the most iconic Miami-set movie of all time returns to the Magic City, this time without a chainsaw, mountains of coke and his “little friend.” He’ll discuss his 50 years of acting and directing, a career that has spanned from The Godfather and Serpico to his recent biopics about Joe Paterno and Jimmy Hoffa, in a conversation moderated by radio personality Paul Castronovo.

September 23rd. Miami River Cruise with Dr. Paul George of the History of Miami Museum Tour on the  Miami River on the Island Queen, departing from Bayside Marketplace.  As Dr. George recounts the history of Miami, learn the story of the Miami River from the late 19th century, and hear tales of the area’s earliest known inhabitants, the Tequesta, all while cruising through Miami’s Downtown. September 23rd, Ski Mask the Slump God will be playing at University of Miami’s Watsco Center in Coral Gables.  South’s Florida’s own Stokely Goulbourne, a.k.a. Ski Mask the Slump God, a.k.a. the fastest rapper in the South, comes home. He’s had a big year thanks to his XXL Freshman List appearance and his Beware the Book of Eli mixtape, and he’s poised to go even bigger at this Miami tour stop.

Mango Recipes For You

Mango Madness is in Full Swing in Miami

All mango tree owners are reporting an abundance of fruit this year. 

We at the Scout Guide Miami wanted to help you find THE BEST ways to prepare this fruit, so we went to Whisk Gourmet for some help. We decided to run a recipe contest. We bribed you to submit your favorite mango recipe with the promise of our favorite (the winner) receiving a $100 gift certificate to Whisk.

I now see that my love for this South Miami restaurant is shared by many! Y’all came through (thanks!).

It wasn’t easy but Chef Brendan of Whisk chose 3 recipes that sounded most appealing to him and prepared them for a tasting committee.

It was not easy, but I’m happy to announce, on Chef Brendan’s birthday, that The Scout Guide Miami winning Mango recipe was submitted by Hansel Munoz, a Miami musician! (He can sing and cook.. impressive).

Without further ado I present to you the...

Chef Brendan understood why this drink won our vote.  It was sweet and lighter than you might guess.. probably from the cup of ice.  Very satisfying on a hot Miami day.

The Power of Her

This week, one of Miami’s favorite Contemporary Art Consultants, Tanya Brillembourg, opened an exhibit titled “The Power of Her” at the Ideobox Art Space in Wynwood featuring works by South Florida artists Camilla Webster and Maria Cristina Carbonell.

 I had so much fun at opening night and was lucky enough to steal a few minutes (maybe ten.. is that selfish?) of Camilla Webster’s time and received back ground on the exhibit and the pieces included.

Camilla told me (and I’m paraphrasing) that she and Maria and Tanya were all inspired by women speaking their truth, especially during the last year of he Women’s March and #MeToo movement.

I loved the pieces that each artist chose… I was really drawn to the subject and colors. I loved Camilla’s new “Flower Power: Exploring the Feminine.” series, that makes its debut at “The Power of Her” exhibit. 

Flower Power is a series of acrylic on canvas paintings, each of a woman and a flower, paired with a poem penned by Camilla.  Camilla’s mother kept a beautiful garden, and taught her the meaning that each flower carried. Each painting and accompanying poem was inspired by the meaning of the flower included in the painting! How cool is that?

For the most part, Camilla used women from print ads as inspiration for each painting in this series, but she laughed as she told me actually, their faces always seemed to turn out like someone she had known in her past. 

I really enjoyed studying each painting as I read her poems, so I do not want to give too much away...but I’d like to share one of the painting/poem combinations from Camilla Webster’s Flower Power series here:

Our mouths stuffed closed for so long.

The Greek goddess Iris, was goddess of the rainbow and a messenger for the Olympian Gods.  The myth has given the Iris flower an eternal link with communication.  In the Victorian era, “An announcement of birth, an invitation to a dance, a token for a lover or a simple message of introduction, all could be accompanied by an iris.

 SURFSIDE'S FIRST EVER PADDLETOPIA FESTIVAL

MAY 19 - 20, 2018, 96th Street Park at 9580 Bay Drive Surfside

This groovy two-day affair will transform the 96th Street waterfront park in Miami's Uptown Beachtown into a weekend-long festival with paddle boarding, wellness brands, fitness demos, healthy snacks and family activities.

Paddletopia will feature stand-up paddle boarding along the intracoastal including complimentary paddle boards in partnership with Miami Beach Paddle Board and kayaks available to the public at a pop-up dock on the waterway bordering the park.

Livin’ The Mad Life

Frieda Kahlo’s work has been given many descriptions but one of my favorites is “magical realism.” Don’t you love it?  She drew on her Aztec background and used symbols to cue her viewers on deeper meanings in her art. 

I’m not sure if it’s magic or not, but for whatever reason I am always drawn to her paintings, or maybe really anything Frida (I die for Ashley Longshore’s Frida’s)  which is why I had to track down the designers of THIS hand bag... and guess what!

They live in Miami!

This bag is part of the  Livin’ The Mad Life line by  a mother/daughter team, named Megan and Aroon Duncanson.   Their mission is  to

Y’all, did you know that the fashion industry is the second largest polluter in the world, only behind the oil industry? It is.. think about it... so much of our closets are made up of “disposable looks” - inexpensive clothes that we get rid of after a couple of months.  And that is just part of what makes the fashion industry big polluters.

So Megan and Aroon launched a line of all vegan, cruelty-free handbags AND up cycled designer bags, that are pieces of art that the buyers will want to hang on to, and not add to the pollution problem!

Mom Megan is a world-renowned artist whose art work can be found around the world. She told me that she has always loved fashion and once painted a purse for herself which received so much attention, she realized there was an opportunity to marry her love of fashion and art. 

Megan has incorporated her best selling art piece “The Circle of Life” (seen on the bag second from the left above) into her new handbag line and has also brought new art work to the collection. A Conversation with Magita

Magita Rojas is part of the mother/daughter team that owns Plume, a globally inspired home accessories boutique in Coral Gables.

Plume was part of the 20+ South Florida interior designers who reimagined the historic Deering Estate for the Junior League of Miami Showhouse that is going on now, through April 29, 2018 (for details and ticket information click here)

Last week I sat down with Magita and asked her, about her favorite elements  in the Miami Showhouse.  She walked me through her top 5 design details that can be found at Deering Estate now, enjoy!

I love the use and versatility of trays when decorating homes used as a foundation to layer other accessories.  This mirrored tray is especially beautiful as it reflects the items on top.

The Grand Salon in the Stone House done by Elizabeth Ghia Interiors.

Especially since fireplaces are not used often in Miami, placing these gorgeous decorative feathered headdresses is an amazing way to dress up this unused space.  Available for sale at Plume in all different colors and sizes.

This dramatic contemporary artwork brings such color and drama to a very traditional room, directly opposite very classical artwork. I love mixing modern and traditional but it has to be done right as in this room.

Not every house has a real bar, and I love that this designer showed us how one can stage a mini bar anywhere in a house even in small spaces.  A mini table lamp is a perfect touch to create ambiance to a tray with bar items.

Elizabeth Ghia Interiors: JLM  Showhouse at Deering Estate

Today, the Junior League of Miami Showhouse opened their doors at the historic Deering Estate and WOW, it blew my mind.

Beginning April 15- April 29, 2018, Tuesdays through Sundays from 11 am- 5 pm, guests can explore the interior and exterior spaces of the Deering Estate re-imagined with modern touches by some of South Florida’s most innovative designers.  

Scout Guide Miami Member Elizabeth Ghia Interiors, transformed the Grand Salon.  Last week I had a  sneak peek of this beautiful space then sat down with Elizabeth for a chat about her design concept..

TSG Miami: Why did you decide to participate in the JLM Showhouse and did it turn out as you expected?

EG: I was invited by the Junior League to participate.  This is not your average showhouse, and I understood that from the beginning.  The Deering Estate is not only a historic property, but also a museum, and with that comes challenges, but also opportunities.

TSG Miami: You chose such a big room! Congratulations, I would be intimidated by the large ball room!  What design strategies did you use to tackle this large space and do you have advice for others that might have a large space like this to decorate in their home?

EG: The first room on my tour of the Deering Estate was the Grand Salon, an imposing 1500 square feet, but I couldn’t get it out of my head.  It was the room that spoke to me and I knew I’d enjoy reimagining it as an elegant drawing room along side lots of amazing art!

My advice for a large room  is not to put furniture against the walls and build a seating area in the middle of the room.

TSG Miami: Deering Estate is a historical landmark.  How did the home’s history effect your design? Did you mix elements of the past and present?

EG: Every design has to start somewhere, and for me the starting point was the estate’s original collection.  I fell in love with two antique Coromandel screens, along with a white marble griffin table, and some charming little foo dogs. I built the color palate around the screens using textiles from collections at Pierre Frey that draw heavily on antique textile prints and patterns.

Charles Deering was a great supporter of local artist in his day and I have chosen four local recognized artists for the Grand Salon, Monique Lazard, Camilla Webster, Liv Dockerty, Christina Petterson, and one from slightly further away, Ken Tate, who is New Orleans based.  Along with these contemporary artists, we also added in some of the Deering Estate’s permanent collection, a self portrait by Charles Deering and a portrait of Mrs Deering.

TSG Miami: Why did you select pink?

EG: I’ve been in love with the color blush for a long time.  To me using blush made the ceiling, which I couldn’t repaint, work with the rest of the room and with the burgundy in the Coromandel screens.  Blush is such a neutral in my eyes, but also very pretty and elegant.

TSG Miami: What are the favorite design elements of your room?

EG: Collaborating with Steinway on a self-playing Spirio piano for the room was a dream come true for me, and really makes the room come alive, I feel.  When you hear the piano playing Chopin taken from a Horowitz recital it brings tears to your eyes!

I also love the Juju hats from Plume in the fireplace, a whimsical addition.  I love the sea grape coffee table by Mantra, and all the books from Books & Books.  As the great decorator Billy Baldwin once said “The best decoration in the world is a room full of books”.

Scouted Miami April Calendar 2018

April 1-30: O MIAMI is a Knight Foundation-funded organization that aims for every single person in Miami-Dade County to encounter a poem during the month of April.  Events include readings, music, workshops and even mini-golf. 

April 5-7: Longines Global Chapions Horse Jumping Tour the world’s premier show jumping series returns to the US continent bringing Olympic-level sport to Miami Beach for the 4th year in a row.  With many of the top American riders regulars on the Tour as well the best international riders from the sport. 

 April 14- 29: The Junior League of Miami has partnered with the Deering Estate to host its 2018 Miami Showhouse at the historic estate, which spans more than 444-acres along Biscayne Bay at 16701 SW 72nd Avenue in Palmetto Bay.  

This highly anticipated design event is the Junior League of Miami’s leading biennial fundraiser and will inspire dozens of the most sought-after interior designers to temporarily transform interior and exterior spaces in the former home of Charles Deering, that dates back to 1900.

It will raise funds for the women, children and families who benefit from Junior League of Miami’s charitable projects and scholarships.

April 14-15th:  Celebrate the season with local foods and gorgeous gardens at the 39th Annual Spring Garden Festival at FAIRCHILD TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDEN. Learn tips to keep your garden thriving during the summer months, pick up a trick from local chefs at a cooking demonstration, shop artisan vendors or pick up delicious foods from local vendors.   Then take home a spectacular plant from our famed Spring Plant Sale. 

 April 20th-22nd Wynwood Life Festival.  Fusing art, music, food and fashion, the weekend-long street celebration features pop-up art galleries, a style lounge hosting runway shows and a culinary showcase led by prominent Miami chefs. More than 20 local bands and DJs also take the stage, including Afrobeta. Admission is FREE.  

April 12- May 13th: Winner of the 2015 TONY AWARD for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book of a Musical, Fun Home is coming to the Zoetic Stage and Adrienne Arsht Center.  Fun Home is about Alison, a graphic novelist who dives deep into her past to tell the story of her father, a volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Through her work, she relives her unique upbringing in the family’s funeral home, her burgeoning sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father. Fun Home is a refreshingly honest, wholly original musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

 April 26:  Taking strides for better health, the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run is a 5k run/walk race that takes place in downtown on Bayfront Park.   The purpose of the Corporate Run Series is to promote running and walking as a means to a fit, healthy lifestyle for people from all walks of corporate life. Unlike most races of it’s kind that occur in the early morning, this one happens after work.  A minimum of 4 members per team.  

April 27:  Denim and Diamonds put on by Miami Women Who Rock .  An evening of spectacular fun under the star at the hottest rooftop in Coral Gables benefiting the Lotus House.  Live music by the click.  Tickets are $50/person.

Must Have Shoes for Spring 2018

I have  been studying my favorite fashion resources to understand the shoes I NEED to update my wardrobe this spring. I came up with a list of 5 must have styles, and was not surprised to find them all at Splash in South Miami
