Hucklerabbot omegavese drabbles!! This is part 3 (it's getting happier but I do think a part 4 is needed to really finish this)
Robby is curled up in his nest for the last time. He's trying to enjoy it, soaking in the way his and Jack's scents mix together and replaying memories of them together. Each heat and rut, the times one of them got dangerously close to biting the other, days where they snuggled together without the excuse of their hormones. He wishes Jack were here. His strong arms holding Robby's shaking body steady, nose pressed to his mating gland, sniffing and licking. Making Robby feel wanted in an impossible way.
A sad whine erupts from his throat, calling for his alpha. Jack isn't coming, and he isn't Robby's alpha; he never has been, no matter how much Robby let himself pretend.
He has Jack's old college shirt draped over his head. It's the first thing he ever gave Robby when they first agreed to spend their cycles together. Robby's tempted to keep it. Tuck this one item under his mattress and hold it close whenever the loneliness becomes too much.
He imagines Dennis in this shirt. The way is would drape prettily over his skinny shoulders. Another, more pathetic, whine escapes him.
A loud knock interrupts his pity party. Robby shrinks in on himself, if he gets out that's it. He'll have to tear his nest apart before he can climb back in or Jack will never get his things back. Dennis won't have proper nesting materials. Tears sting his eyes.
The knocking gets louder. Pounding. "Dr. Robby!" No, no, no. "Dr. Robby, are you home?"
Of all the fucking people. Jack's new omega has come to collect Robby's nest for himself. He rips the shirt from his head. Time to face the music. He drags his feet to the door; the knocking never ceases.
"I'm coming," Robby says, voice hoarse. When he opens the door, Dennis looks as beautiful as ever. Face flushed and shining blue eyes looking up. Jack will never get sick of that view, Robby is certain.
"Sorry to bother you, Dr. Robby," he says. He looks down, the shirt is still in Robby's hand. "Did you take your nest apart?"
Robby's grip on the shirt tightens. "I'm working on it."
"Well, stop." Dennis pushes his way inside. "Jack called me frantic. Why would you take your nest apart?"
"Duke isn't going to want to spend a heat in a nest made for another alpha."
"Who's Duke?" Dennis frowns. "Spend your heat with Jack."
Robby's jaw tightens. "Don't you want stuff for your nest?" He holds the shirt out for Dennis to take, though his white knuckles give a different impression. Dennis leans forward and sniffs the fabric.
Robby's teeth grind painfully. "Mhm."
"You know what Jack smells like," Robby bites.
Dennis gets closer. "It doesn't just smell like him."
"You can wash it." The thought makes Robby sick.
"I don't want to." He takes another step forward. "I like that it smells like both of you."
"Uh..." Robby doesn't know what to say to that. Dennis pushes his wrist to bring the material to Robby's chest.
"Have you ever been with another omega."
"Long time ago." Robby's brain can't catch up with his mouth. "Long, long time ago. Before you were born."
"Hot," Dennis says. "Did you like it?"
"I'm sorry." Robby feels like he's having the most bizarre not-quite-a-nightmare possible. "You're being courted by Jack."
"Courting multiple people at once used to be the norm; it's natural, really."
"You want your alpha to court me?" Robby can't keep up.
"I want us all to court each other," Dennis clarifies. "But if you're not interested, I'll understand. I'll back off and you can have Jack."
"What?" That's insane. If Jack was courting him, there's nothing anyone could do or say to get Robby's claws out of that alpha. He'd be at risk of tearing the throat out of anyone his omega considered a threat. "But he's yours."
"He's ours. Even if I mate him, and you don't, you still have him." He points to the couch. "Can we sit?"
"Sure." Robby's not sure where he is right now. It looks like his house, but nothing feels real. He settles on the couch, Dennis next to him. His fingers still wound around Jack's shirt, but not as tightly.
"Could we scent each other?" Dennis asks. His big eyes aren't as threatening as Robby found them before. "To see if you like it?"
Robby nods. He couldn't speak if he tried.
Dennis leans in. His nose hovers at the junction of Robby's neck. Robby follows suit. Dennis is sweet, traditional candy shop type of sweet. No wonder Jack likes him so much; Robby's mouth is watering.
A hand finds its way to Robby's hair, pulling him closer. "You smell really good," Dennis huffs. "Soft, like... I don't know."
"Whipped cream." That's what Jack always says anyway.
"Yeah," Dennis pants into his neck. "I bet you're like a fucking sundae during heat."
Dennis' fudgey scent is making Robby's head spin; he has to pull back before he loses his balance, even sitting. "That was really..."
"Let's spend the next few weeks getting to know each other, all of us. Courting properly, not whatever the two of you have been doing."
"Okay." The remaining sugary scent makes that offer all the more appealing.
"Keep your nest and spend your next heat with Jack. Please."
"No, and I'd hate if you spent it with someone else."
An invisible weight lifts from Robby's shoulders. "Thank you."
Dennis smiles. "We should call Jack. I'm worried he might kill a patient thinking about you with another alpha."
