Solar Research in Tucson: US Army to Build Next Huge Solar Farm
Anyone who has ever seen an Army/Air Force football game knows how competitive these two branches of our damn fine military can get. And now the new game appears to be Clean Energy.
I recently told you about Davis-Monthan Air Force Base switching on the largest Defense Department Solar array in the country, right here in Tucson. Well turns out the US Army is stepping up their game to take that title away from the Air Force at their base just outside Tucson.
Fort Huachuca recently announced that they are going to break ground on a solar array that when finished will be the largest at any military base in the country. This conjunction with Tucson Electric Power is an joint effort to help reduce both organizations' carbon footprint, while also reducing energy costs. Speaking of cost... it won't cost a taxpayer one cent.
Tesla Motors would be hard pressed to find a community more committed to Solar Energy than ours.
Tucson: A World Leader in Space Exploration. Seriously.
While Tesla Motors is looking towards the future of cars, another of Elon Musk's projects is looking to the future of space travel and exploration. Today is the scheduled launch of the third SpaceX mission to the International Space Station. SpaceX is the first commercial company to work in conjunction with NASA and getting NASA's stamp of approval is a major accomplishment for SpaceX, as partnering with NASA means you are truly the best at what you do.
So it's fitting that this launch takes place within a week of NASA's announcement that the University of Arizona's OSIRIS-REx mission has received final approval to begin constructing it's spacecraft. Our mission will track, orbit and return samples from a near earth object, in this case the asteroid Bennu. It's an $800 million dollar space exploration mission being led right here in Tucson and guess what? It's not the first.
Most people don't know that Tucson is the one of the leaders in space exploration. No really. It is. Tucsonans mapped the surface of the moon to help prepare for the Apollo moon landings. We trained astronauts including Buzz Aldrin and Neal Armstrong to prepare them for eventual moon landing. We've worked with NASA since it's founding and have contributed to dozens of missions over the years. So it's no surprise that the University of Arizona was the first university ever to be put in charge of a NASA space mission with the Phoenix Mars Lander in 2008, which was an overwhelming success.
So if Tesla Motors was to select Tucson as the new home for it's GigaFactory, it would have a direct connection to the community, university, and people that will continue to be on the forefront of engineering and space exploration. Sounds like we'd have a lot to work together on.
Tesla+Tucson Video a Good Postcard for the Gigafactory
It seems like there are a lot of us in Tucson that want the Gigafactory to come to town. Big shout out to MakerHouse, the Downtown Innovation District, Art Fire, and Sparc Interactive for putting this all together. Hopefully it will encourage several creative video responses.
Solar Research in Tucson: US Military's Largest Solar Project
Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, an air force strategic center and one of the largest employers in Tucson, recently made US Military History, by turning on the largest photo voltaic solar array utilized by the Department of Defense.
The Air Force is the largest user consumer of energy in the federal government and this new solar array will cut costs for them by 35% for the next 25 years, saving taxpayers around $500,000 dollars a year.
In Tucson, we don't just talk about solar research, we put it into practice in real-world working conditions.
Check out the story from the AZ Daily Star.
Solar Research in Tucson: REhnu
Ever wonder why the US hasn't implemented large scale solar as a real competitive energy source? Simple... because currently, it's expensive. Coal power plants create the vast majority of power in the United States and because the infrastructure for such power is already in place, coal power is cheap even though it is terribly bad for the environment. Most people don't even know that the majority of their power comes from coal.
REhnu was started by Roger Angel at the University of Arizona to combat this problem. His team is on the verge of creating large scale solar power that has a competitive cost with coal power
From their website, "REhnu has set as its targets for high-volume production an installed capital cost of $1/watt and a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of $0.05/kW-hr. REhnu’s goal is cost parity with fossil fuel by 2020."
They have received million dollar grants from the US Department of Energy and their second prototype has shown considerable improvements and puts them well on the way to their goal.
If none of this impresses you, maybe this will: Roger Angel says that when this technology is functional, one 7 square mile solar energy array would create the same amount of power on a sunny day as Palo Verde nuclear power plant, which is the biggest in the country.
Check out REhnu's website, a profile on Angel on NPR, or this video to learn all about this truly revolutionary company.

60 Minutes Profiles Tesla and Elon Musk

Tonight 60 minutes did a profile on Elon Musk, the head of Tesla Motors and Space X. It gives a lot of perspective on the direction the company is going, how they are going to revolutionize the future of automobiles, and just how important the GigaFactory is going to be to make it happen.
Tucson really has an opportunity to be part of something amazing if we get this manufacturing plant. And we're not too shabby when it comes to space exploration and landing things on Mars.

Tucson Tradition: 4th Avenue Street Fair
Looking for a family friendly independent art festival?
The 4th Avenue Street fair in Tucson is the place to be. One of the largest gatherings of local artisans in America takes over a main stretch of Tucson twice a year and allows independent artists an opportunity to display and market their crafts. You can find everything from furniture, to paintings, to jewelry, to pottery at one of the 400 artist booths. Compliment it with over two dozen food vendors, live music and activities, and you can see why almost 600,000 a year will stop by the 4th Avenue Street fair in Tucson. Great for local business. Great for the community.
Here's some pics from this year's festival.Post and share your own with the hashtag #TucsonForTesla.
" Tesla’s Gigafactory will turn an innovative carmaker into another kind of company: a metals market supply-chain manager of lithium and cobalt."
Takeaway: The Gigafactory will be the largest producer of cell battery power. This one factory will produce more batteries than the rest of the world.

Challenges and Solutions?
A few days ago Tim Stellar brought up one of the major hurdles to the Gigafactory in Tucson. A dumbass archaic law that allows auto dealers to monopolize car sales in Arizona. It's funny that a state that claims to be friendly to business would try to stymie competition and the fair market in such a way. But it appears now that the Arizona Legislature might try and fix this, despite being... you know... the Arizona State Legislature.
HB 2123 would allow Tesla to sell cars directly to consumers. Let's get this thing passed quickly!

Badass photo of some of the things to get out and do around Tucson!
The city of Tucson has made a formal proposal to become the home of a $5 billion Gigafactory for lithium-ion batteries for electric cars.
Yes! Let's get after it Tucson.
#TucsonForTesla
So let me explain.... This blog and adjoining social media accounts are to convince Tesla Motors to move it's Gigafactory to Tucson, AZ. It's a long shot, but in the age of social media anything is possible with an upbeat attitude.
I like to call Tucson the Oldest Futuristic City in America. I know how cheesy that sounds. But Tucson has always been home to forward thinking people who were willing to take on a challenge. Imagine how difficult it was for the first group of people to decide to cultivate farms in this desert. The first village was established in 2100 BC. The pyramids and sphinx in Egypt had only recently been finished. Since that time, this town has seen it's fair share of characters (and conquistadors, literally): Cabeza de Vaca ate cactus here, Wyatt Earp walked the streets, John Dillinger drank here (at bars that are still open), and astronauts learned how to explore the moon here. We attract the bizarre, the different, the outcasts, and the freaks. But those people often make for the most interesting individuals and are the people who go on to change the world. Here's a good example: our university students built a spacecraft, landed it on Mars, and explored another planet, before other countries have even gone into space or been to the moon.
And now Tucson has a shot at turning the corner on our future and becoming the city, we all know we could be. Palo Alto turned the corner with Hewlett-Packard, Austin turned the corner with Dell Computers, and Tesla Motors could be that for Tucson. The numbers don't lie. A 5 Billion dollar investment of private funds. 6,500 high paying jobs. The potential that Tucson could be a leader in energy research, production, innovation and distribution, is right within our grasp at a moment in time when the entire world truly needs these breakthroughs.
But what's the point? What can we do about it?
We can show Tesla why this place kicks ass. The great people. The amazing research. The new things that are being done and new businesses that have been started. The potential. We need to shake of this idea that we are a boring old town with nothing to offer. We need to share our stories, photos, cool experiences, great food, awesome research, badass sports (BEAR DOWN WILDCATS) with everyone who will listen. We need to make so much noise, that everyone starts talking about us.
This space will be used to post and share all breaking news on the Gigafactory, and what we can do to welcome Tesla to our city. I will also post ideas and cool things that are shared with me so that we can hopefully start to make waves.
Follow us on twitter at @TucsonforTesla and hashtag all your inspirational posts #TucsonForTesla. If enough of us can get the word out there, maybe the powers that be at Tesla motors will give our town a look over and decide what so many others have over the years. That this would be a good home for them.
