Each week we’re highlighting a collaboration between SO SO Happy and female illustrators we love. This week, we bring you Tuesday Bassen, an artist that uses clean line drawing and colorful palettes to illustrate quirky and strong female characters.
SSH: Where are you from originally & what was the path to where you live now?
TB: I’m originally from Nebraska but moved out when I was 17 to go to school in Minneapolis, MN. After college, I lived in NYC for four years and moved to glorious Los Angeles two months ago.
SSH: You draw primarily female characters and have two new artist zines “Ugly Girl Gang” and “Aliens vs. Space Cowgirl” with Penelope Gazin. Is there something that draws you to these tough female characters?
TB: Absolutely! I like both emotionally and physically tough women. My work is made with women in mind, not as an aspirational image, but an empowering image that is both sympathetic and celebratory. A lot of the drawings are an ode to women that I know or women I’d like to know. Mix in my love of 70’s pulp films, wrestling, and kitsch, and here we are.
SSH: What mediums do you use to create your works?
TB: Brushes, ink, and Photoshop.
SSH: What music, other artists, or books are most influential to you right now? What’s on your playlist?

SSH: Whom did you text last and what was it about?
TB: My boyfriend, who accused me of stealing one of his shirts again.
SSH: At the end of the day, what makes you happy?
TB: I love living in Los Angeles, and it makes me happy to live here. Other things that make me happy: first cup of coffee, seaweed, driving in my car on sunny days, and feeling satisfied when I finish a project.
