It's 2024, February 15th. And we're still here!

So, I watched this concert via YouTube and all I can say is that I'm still so glad to be born in this generation where access to free, live music is easy. I'm pretty sure it would've been great to experience it live in the flesh. (See the concert crowd towards the end.) Great performances! Kudos!

HARANA - Full Feature Documentary

Today, the weather was a bit downcast, as it had been raining hard last night. Got home tired from a night shift from the hospital and upon waking up, I learned that one of my patients died (just prior to transport to the ICU). My day is quite heavy even at midday.

Anyway, while resting at home, I chanced upon video clips posted by classical guitarist/composer Florante Aguilar on Facebook, mostly harana and kundiman music. These led me to watch his documentary on Harana (The Search for the Lost Art of the Serenade), a wonderfully poignant film about traditional music, Filipino culture, and honoring our roots in this time. It accomplished so many things in my opinion: learning that talent in Harana still exists in our midst (in common countrymen), being able to recognize and document never-before recorded songs, and evoking some form of nostalgia to others (read the comments on YouTube). The documentary also honored the talents of the haranistas, who lived to be a fisherman, a tricycle driver, and a farmer most days of their lives.

It amazes me how the most unexpected things like this could uplift my heavier days, even when tears were shed as I watched the documentary. It also reminded me of my teacher from grade school, Ma'am Amba, who taught me to play bandurria as part of our rondalla ensemble way back then. The documentary's take on the traditional song "O Ilaw" especially brought me back to that wonderful time of my life.

Kudos to the team who made HARANA!

May we never get tired of being in awe, be it music, the arts, or anything in life. 🙂

The Swimmers (2022)

Hello Tumblr! The universe gave me extra time to recalibrate my life and plans this year and so I have time to binge-watch series and movies.

One noteworthy movie I saw this week is called The Swimmers. It's about teen Syrian refugee Yusra Mardini's journey to compete in the Olympics under the Refugee Olympic Team. It's very inspiring and uplifting.. also gives one perspective on how one's life could change in an instant with war happening in this day and age.

I'm looking for movies with the same feels as this. Do you have any suggestions?

Nonong Buencamino (composer) - Taimis, for Cello and Orchestra by Manila Symphony Orchestra

Heard this beautiful piece at Pintô Art Museum in Antipolo City over the weekend. This was part of a gallery which featured Jose Rizal's correspondence with fiancée Leonor Rivera, which specifically included a sculpture, this musical piece, a spoken wordpiece about Rizal and Rivera, another spoken wordpiece about the letters, and a relief (please see attached photos for more details).

I fell in love with everything in that particular room, the wonderful music most especially. It was definitely one of the highlights of the museum, in my opinion.

Feeling particularly down right now. Must be the hormones and the career/life-defining decisions I have yet to hurdle.. and some things left hanging, waiting to unfold (almost feels like a double-edged sword). My limbic system must be working, I was able to come up with a three-song playlist just to soothe myself.

One peaceful Thursday

Three days ago, I thought listening to Lucy Dacus’ version of La Vie En Rose was the most perfect way to arrive in Oroquieta City -- I still do think that. I had a calm morning prior to that. My bags had been packed the night prior - everything was set. I was then able to help prepare breakfast before leaving. I had my usual coffee. Nothing was crammed, I had a relaxed drive so to speak. So, imagine listening to this refreshingly reinvented song being played, almost sounding like the perfect score if it were a movie scene. Peaceful, right?

And then I remember being annoyed by the van in front of me, turning left on such a short notice -- a mere one-second signal light. Slowly I hit brake, and brake, with the song in the background fading.. and then BOOM! A thud, my body momentarily thrust forward and back, thankfully limited by the seatbelt. A moment of confusion, I looked left and right. The road ahead was serene. I was on full brake, the car in a halt. I checked inside, some things were misplaced on the floor but nothing too serious. I looked in the back, an SUV was in complete stop - its hood slightly opened and bent. Only then I realized that I had been hit in the rear. I never saw it coming as we were approaching the city proper with everyone in relatively slow pace.

I remember being shaken for a few minutes after. Bystanders were asking if I was okay and if I needed any help. I am just so grateful we (the other driver and I) were unscathed despite the wreckage. My car still runs, albeit deformed with the rear bumper removed.

Anyway, things like this happen. Accidents happen everyday. I’m just so glad nobody got hurt and we had a smooth agreement after the assessment. I only consider one close call over ten years ago when I had severe dengue. And this was nowhere near close to death but it’s good to be reminded from time to time how fortunate I am to be living this life, my life. I don’t know what the purpose is or if there is one in order to complete one’s life. But here I am.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Just seen this movie and I feel like it hits too close to home, with the pandemic we are in right now.. and other social issues. It makes one think. There are three main points that I've drawn from it:

1. Man is selfish.

Some pople in authority with high influence tend to downplay the situation and push their agenda to their advantage. Remember the scene in the Oval Office where the astronomers first tried to explain the gravity of the impending comet hitting the planet? And then later on acted against the same brains who discovered it, just because of ratings? And then later on again succumbing to a profitable (but too-good-be-true) alternative. Putting off literally the world's safety over money. Also, remember how the pathetic show hosts tend to downplay the same astronomers when they first tried to warn the public? They had as much power to send the message across but instead dismissed it as some flavor of the week. Despicable.

2. The human race is dumb and intelligent at the same time.

We have the capacity to learn, understand, and grasp complex ideas. Some of the best of us can even predict an impending end-of-the world-scenarios with the data available.. some of the best of us can develop vaccines against a resilient virus that's been causing a pandemic.. some can provide sound solutions to all this. And yet, some of us choose to look the other way, inspite of the glaring evidence in front of us. Conspiracy theorists here and there - they sound all-too intelligent and persuasive. I don't know if man in general is wired to question and oppose each other's ideas. Just pick an issue and you'll see, there will always be a set of followers and an opposition.

Also, we are so dumb and pathetically disrespecful these days - we go as far as mock the very authority of a specific study, make memes about them, post insults on social media that we ourselves cannot say face-to-face when given the chance. Go ahead and read any news and scroll away the comments section.

3. It is non-material things that matter in the end.

Be it relationships, family, friends, or a Greater Being - indeed, what is essential is invisible to the eye.

The movie is very timely and deeply moving for me. It made me contemplate on how I would react if it happened to me in real life. Would I stick to my values and principles or cave in?

Hello, 2022! I found two amazing Filipino films on Netflix which involves the lives of domestic helpers in Hong Kong. Both are an eye-opener and really worthwhile to watch!

The first one is a 2019 fictional film called Hello, Love, Goodbye which was directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina. The acting was superb and the issues tackled were substantial, heavy, and deeply touching. I'd like to see more of movies like this one.

The second one is a 2016 documentary called Sunday Beauty Queen, which was directed by Baby Ruth Villarama. It is about Filipinas who joined and organized a Filipino beauty pageant in Hong Kong and the kind of lives they lead, the impact they have with their employers' lives, and vice versa.

They're both really nice. If you're interested, I'd recommend that they'd be seen in that sequence. Enjoy!

I was on my way to work today - it was a peaceful 45-minute travel to the next city. It had been stormy yesterday and much to my amazement, these three songs were consecutively played thru my saved Spotify songs.. it's as if the universe knew just which songs to play at that particular moment.

Anyway, I'm thankful there was not much devastation the supertyphoon Odette has done to our locality. We were warm and dry during the entire ordeal, our roofs still intact. I just hope those who were badly hit got some help in time.

Such an incredibly talented person Jonathan Larson was.. and gone too young just when his career was about to take off. I think I'll need to re-watch RENT again.

Alone/Together (2019)

One word: nostalgia. I don't know if it's the songs, the locations, the color scheme, or the subtle contemporary cultural references. Everything felt nostalgic from beginning to end.

What a well-written movie! I felt the writer's sense of nationalism injected within the script. There were certain lines which I think meant beyond the context in the movie, and I quote:

"No matter how tragic the past is, we must not forget. We must never forget."

"..Pumunta ako ng US para makilala ng mga taga New York. Hindi ko naisip na dito pala sa sarili kong bansa ko na makakahanap ng tunay na makikinig, kung saan ako tunay na kailangan, kung saan ako tunay na malaya at mapagpalaya.."

I truly enjoyed watching this movie.

Lake Street Dive - Shame, Shame, Shame (Live at The Sheen Center)

It's been a couple of weeks now and I somehow couldn't snap out of whatever it is that's been hovering around, the clouds in my coffee.. and just now, I decided to make a new roadtrip playlist for when I'm going to meet my college friends in a week or so. I came across this song which is just the perfect vibe for me. Lake Street Dive never gets old. They always amaze and uplift! This band will always be like my magic music drug. *wink*
