· At your satellite, consider offering Capstone or Fight the Good Fight of Faith in targeted leadership development ways that may not include taking all 16 modules. For example, maybe a church wants to require all elder candidates to have taken at least one Capstone module before being nominated. Or to be baptized or accepted as a member, one must first take Fight the Good Fight of Faith. Continue to think of creative ways of offering training to those in your network that may not necessarily include all 16 modules leading to graduation.
· Please refer to the attached document, “Leadership Arc.pdf” from Don Allsman for the following: Having talked to several mentors, site coordinators, and students over the past months, I inferred a general pattern in the Capstone leadership development process. Students start off with an emphasis on academics and traditional school-oriented issues such as “is this on the test?” or “what grade did I receive?” As time goes on, students gradually shift from students to leaders, as the leadership development principles begin to take hold over time. There seems to be an inflection point after about four modules, where effective leaders start to become mature and have less fixation with grades and academics and emphasize how they are growing as leaders. There seems to be another shift around the 12 module, where mature leaders become especially effective, and then by graduation they have become even more seasoned. Of course, immature leaders may never latch onto these principles and can stay stuck as students, even to graduation. If you have any observations about this, please email them to Don Allsman ([email protected]).
· TUMI is making the transition to on-demand printing and fulfillment. This change will be cost effective for our satellites and students, and it will release our time and resources so that we can develop new tools for training urban Christian leaders. As an added benefit, for a limited time and while supplies last, we are drastically reducing our prices on almost all in-stock merchandise. Please visit the www.tumistore.org website to find out more.

· Rick Horne, Site Coordinator of The Urban Ministry Institute Chester (PA), shares about a strategy to grow their site.
I've contacted 20 pastors here in Chester who have had people in our TUMI courses over the years. I've asked them to be part of what I've called a Board of Reference. This is a board, I explained to them, that will not meet and does not require any forms or charts to be filled out. It is strictly a board of reference. It's for new pastors who want some other sources of information about TUMI that seem to be impartial and are people that they know. So, in other words, as we advertise our courses, pastors can contact our board of references to see if we're really biblical, if we are a good school for leadership training, etc.
Of the 20 pastors that I contacted, all of them have indicated they are desirous of being on such a board-many with great enthusiasm. Many of them have expressed profuse appreciation for what TUMI has done for their church leaders. I was blown away.
Praise the Lord. He is the author of all these amazing things here. We're getting a new brochure ready that will include all these pastors and we will put them on the web site.
My colleague Earl has told me that we need to buckle our seatbelts because we're going to see enrollment in our classes skyrocket because of new efforts to communicate with churches and pastors these next months. Keep us in prayer as you think of us.
New Satellites and Coordinators
We have added six new sites since the last Gazette and now have a total of 272 approved satellites and two new Site Coordinators:
#267 – Instituto Urbano BCM - Rosarito, Baja California México
Mike Van Daele introduced us to Baja Christian Ministries and encouraged them to start TUMI sites in Mexico. Eduardo Meza Mayoral is the Baja Christian Ministries Regional Director for Rosarito, Baja California México. He is an ordained chaplain that it goes into many Mexican prisons to share the Gospel with the inmates and part of the vision of his ministry is to take TUMI throughout Baja California, Mexico.
#268 – Urban Ministry Institute at Urban Hope - Philadelphia, PA
Jason Holt is the Ministry Director for Urban Hope in Philadelphia. Serving for the past 16 years, he has been involved in church planting and currently the lead pastor of the Urban Hope Community Church. He heard about TUMI through contacts within World Impact, Jared Meidal (The OAKS) and Bob Engel (Newark). His heart is to further equip a core group of men who have been involved in the leadership of their church, by using Capstone.
#269 – Faith Bible College - Tiap Village, Papua New Guinea
Bobby Wrenn is the President of Beyond Baptism. Several years ago he heard about TUMI’s Capstone curriculum through World Impact’s Ted Smith and became intrigued by the possibilities to use it in the jungle village of Tiap, Papua New Guinea. There are only grass huts, no electricity and no running water, but the Word of God is there! Bobby is also working with TUMI’s Harold Roesler to complete a translation of Fight the Good Fight of Faith into the Tok Pisin language.
#270 – Urban Ministry & Bible Institute - Los Angeles, CA
Nicole Rivas is the Executive Director for Inner-City Women of Faith in Los Angeles. She heard about TUMI through World Impact’s L.A. City Director, Pete Watts. After practicing law for more than 20 years, Nicole recently retired to dedicate herself to full-time ministry. In addition to her law degree, she received a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. The vision for the Urban Ministry & Bible Institute is anchored in training up leaders who will go out and develop congregations who will in turn evangelize their communities.
#271 – The Urban Ministry Institute at Cornerstone - Farmers Branch, TX
This is the second site for Bobby Wrenn, who is the President of Beyond Baptism (the other site is in Papua New Guinea). Several years ago he heard about TUMI’s Capstone curriculum through World Impact’s Ted Smith. The Urban Ministry Institute at Cornerstone will serve to train leaders through Bobby’s home church, Cornerstone Christian Church in Farmers Branch, Texas.
#272 – CBC Leadership Development Institute - Riverside, CA Josue Salomon is the Associate Pastor of Community Bible Church in Riverside, CA. He has acted as a TUMI Mentor for Prison Fellowship in a Southern California prison for the past two and a half years, volunteering under Audrey Fay.
