I gently floated the idea of taking the cats and my mom sounded if anything, incredibly relieved
DNFing Blood Meridian. I just don’t have it in me.
I talked to my mom today and she sounded sooooo relieved at the idea of us taking the cats…
Need a movie about William the Conqueror "Our age of darkness is ending"
I am kind of feeling that 2027 is going to be my fun nonfiction + literature year. I’m a little over political biographies and reading about atrocities
Louie Zong
I finished President McKinley by Robert Merry. Perfectly serviceable biography and I finished it just in time because I got the audiobook for Long Walk to Freedom from Libby today.
I’m down to:
22 books I’ve bought full price
5 books I bought used
6 books on the Kindle
11 books that were free
5 books in French (all of these were gifts)
So about 49 books altogether to clear the “backlog” although only 22 until I’m letting myself buy more books.
Also the remaining list really has a lot of downers on it. The Rape of Nanking… Andersonville… The Bone People… why do I do this to myself
Just got an ice cream sandwich and it only had one cookie??? Open face ice cream sandwich??
Go Tell It On The Mountain is one of those books that I can recognize as a work of considerable skill and deeply evocative while remaining myself completely unmoved. I am sorry to say it, to be honest.
My cousin says no one cleans the litter box and that he always sees cat puke all over the house but my mom “can’t afford” to take them to the vet. No. I am taking them. This is awful.
Pretty sure I’m going to have 4 cats and a power of attorney over my mom soon
I know there’s a stereotype about Americans never knowing who the prime minister is and always thinking it’s still Tony Blair but at a certain point we can’t possibly be blamed for forgetting who it is
Cousin in town visiting and finally spilling all the tea about how bad things are with my mom. It is so much worse than I thought.
She’s living with her sister who constantly berates my mom for not spending enough time with her. Like if my mom is out too late, she’ll berate her. If my mom goes downstairs to talk with my cousin, she is only “allowed” to be down there for half an hour or my aunt will start texting her to come up. My aunt is likely in the early stages of dementia but is making my mom’s life a living hell.
My mom wants to kick her out but can’t because she needs my aunt’s rent money; my mom’s money is entirely going to my sister who lives in England, without a job (somehow - I don’t understand how this is possible). My sister is rude and nasty to my mother when they talk despite my mom constantly sending her money (which I can see on Venmo).
My aunt doesn’t shower. She stinks to high heaven. My mom has similarly stopped taking care of herself. She showers maybe once a week and also smells bad.
My mom wants to move in with her other sister, but that sister does not want the cats to live in her house. The cats that my sister adopted and then dumped on my mom to go live her exciting life abroad, which consists of bed rotting in a rented room and taking trips to the continent with my mom’s money. My mom doesn’t take particularly good care of the cats; she’s never been a cat person, and now they’re part of what’s preventing her from getting herself out of what sounds like an awful situation.
I obviously have to act here. Or I feel like I do. But my mom is lucid; I can’t just get a power of attorney and clean all of this up. But for fuck’s sake, this is intolerable. At the very least I want to take the cats and kick my aunt out of the house. But my mom stubbornly insists to me that everything is fine. God this is so fucked up.
“What if you burned it all down and started over…and then pretended that you hadn’t? What if you insisted on locating your ideals and your identity in the old order that you had already rejected—that, in fact, you had overthrown and destroyed by force? That should seem deeply odd. Yet this is what we do with the most fundamental question of American identity. We tell ourselves a story that links us to a past political regime —Founding America, the America of the Declaration of Independence and the Founder’s Constitution—to which we are not the heirs. We are more properly the heirs of the people who destroyed that regime.”
-Kermit Roosevelt III, The Nation that Never Was.
I’m back on my Kermit 2nd Founding bullshit and I will never stop being tickled with how he’s able to take the argument of every left wing social studies teacher and of William Lloyd Garrison to its best and most logical conclusion: the Declaration and the “founders constitution” suck shit but hooray hooray we are the heirs of the people who killed it with bullets on a hot day in Pennsylvania.
The Catholic church is a thin veneer of aesthetics and religious dogma laid over the Western world's most ancient continuously operating bureaucracy. The issuing of an official Vatican-approved I'm Sorry form that SSPX members have to fill out and tick several checkboxes then get stamped for approval to have their excommunications reversed is more beautiful to me than any liturgy
