This was at times humorous, but mostly weird and honestly kind of mundane slightly queer coming of age tale. The story revolved around three teen girls in the Midwest who were best friends. They shared stories about sexual experiences and family and social relationships in the age of early social media.

The main girl Mina's narration sounded like she was revealing everything that happened backwards from many years later on in time. This reflection was from her own first person POV. Not sure in the actual moments that events occurred that these teen would have done, thought or spoke things in the ways she claimed she and her friends did.

The plot was in ways stunted or negated by flowery and overly descriptive prose. Two of the girls, Mina and Eleanor developed romantic feelings for each other. Extremely awkward the way they handled this. They ignored each other a bit and their friendship was strained. Their best friend between them, Margaret and at least one of the girl's parents, Mina's mother ended up being helpful and supportive.

The one consensual intimacy scene between Eleanor and Mina was lovely and very poignant. Their first kiss and some things that happened before that scene were bizarre and sort of dubious consent. Some strange scenes also occurred between Margaret and Mina with slightly sexual undertones as well. Mina commented that this was just normally how they were around each other as girls who were lifelong best friends were.

Enjoyed this banter filled, short and sweet romance between a chef and lobster woman boat captain who didn't like each other when they first met. Lobster woman Gemma provided fresh lobsters to chef Kay's new restaurant in a reluctant arrangement set up by their respective best friends, Eric and Dina. They both unfairly insulted each other without knowing each other at their first meeting. They later apologized.

The women kept running into and learned more positive things about each other in their small Maine community. They soon evolved from hostile strangers and reluctant business partners into friends and eventually lovers. While they spent time together as friends in ways that appeared like they were dating, it, also, felt a bit instant love once they finally kissed and quickly did a whole lot more. Fast love confessions.

Gemma and Kay had cute nicknames for each other, Chef and Cap/Captain. Both women had different personal demons and past traumas that helped in how they related to each other as they talked and worked through those past experiences together. Gemma had a difficult relationship with her sister that both her best friend Eric and Kay helped her think about differently as well.

Kay and Gemma needed to learn how to manage their very different work schedules so they could spend time together. Still, there was no third act breakup or major fight at any point as they practiced healthy communication.

Told in third person with Dual POVs with lots of internal monologues that seemed as if reading first person. There were a few steamy sex scenes. The cover didn't actually match the descriptions of the main characters.

Trigger warnings: Anxiety, depression and self-esteem issues discussed; Past alcoholism for a main character and substance abuse for a secondary character; Past emotionally abusive working relationship for the other main character; Past loss of a parent for one main character.

Super fun rivals to lovers sort of second chance slow-burn romance between two feisty women who run Cuban pastry businesses for their families in Miami. Lauren and Sylvie hated each other because of a perpetual family feud, but also shared romantic feelings for each other as teens. Small misunderstandings led to a big falling out between them during a high school dance.

They reunited in their early thirties during a prestigious foodie event in Miami and built a new friendship that quickly evolved into love. It all felt a little fast as Lauren literally only broke up with someone else a few weeks before her and Sylvie first kissed. Still, they had some actual dates that were fun with silly and whimsical twists. The treehouse scene was hilarious. Loved their private wedding scene.

Their families were a great addition to everything else going on. Sylvie's godmother Regina was wonderful. Wished there were a few more scenes with Lauren's friends. There was a mystery in the story that was solved with a sort of predictable answer that put an end to the question of why their families feuded. Their romantic relationship shocked their families, but also challenged them all to end their fighting with each other as well.

Told in third person with dual POVs with inner monologue statements that just popped up italicized. Some chapters mixed POVs, but it wasn't too hard to follow. Lots of kissing with an interrupted scene and one long steamy scene with positions all over the place. There's mention of a strap a few times with no actual showing of them using it. Regardless, they felt very connected in all their intimate scenes.

Mayfair98: I was late to the party and only read I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was phenomenal, the kind of book that you just keep thinking about. I know it is not exactly sapphic but I would definitely describe it as queer. It is just around 200 pages and one that you will want to finish in one go.

Funny, weird, irreverent, and pretty gory As You Wake, Break the Shell by Becky Chambers - cozy sci-fi about an intergalactic cowgirl and a medicinal botanist carving out a space for themselves in space. Super sweet and heartwarming (not out til October)
