my stances

trans women and transfemmes are oppressed for being women as well as being trans. they have always had a place within feminism and excluding them from it is denying logical statistics and factual information.

all men benefit from the patriarchy in some way or another. there are of course exceptions as there is to everything but in general this is objectively true. misandry does not exist because men cannot be oppressed, systemically or socially, for being men. almost every problem that "misandry" poses is a direct result of misogyny and the patriarchy. misandry is a term only ever used to silence and belittle women, and it only draws attention away from misogyny.

women of color, especially black women, are stripped of their femininity and humanity and thus are the group of women in most dire need of protection. this is especially true for trans women of color.

gender is entirely a social construct and has been used historically to place people into boxes and strip women of their autonomy.

kink is part of lgbt history and thus belongs at pride. pride was never meant to be a sanitized and youth-friendly space. if you are going to go to a pride march you should be aware that there will be many kinksters there. to add to this, cops do not ever belong at pride. fuck cops.

organized religion is used as an oppressive force towards minority groups. all religions as they currently exist are misogynistic in some way or another. religiocentric countries and regions should not exist. religion should not be taught in schools. however, despite my gripes and criticisms towards religion, i believe it is one's right to practice and believe in it. even so, i believe we as a general society need to begin moving away from organized religion entirely.

free palestine. israel is an oppressive state. hamas is not a terrorist organization. israel is committing a g*nocide and participating in ethnic cleansing.

capitalism is an inherently flawed and oppressive system. there is no version of it that succeeds. there is no version that is ethical. capitalism is the root cause of most problems in the west. if it were up to me, we would have no type of currency besides trade and service exchange.

small, tightly knit communities > wide-scale countries and nations. we need to encourage solidarity and social grouping. empathy is a very important and effective skill to have.

captivity should be a last resort for animal preservation. a lot of zoos are unethical and interfere with the natural environment of wild animals. exotic animals should not be kept as pets. domesticated animals should be kept inside or under proper care. the agriculture and meat industry treat animals very poorly and do not give animals proper ethical environments.

trophy hunting is unnecessary, even if the hunters are donating after killing the animal (why not just donate?). hunting is fine and necessary within moderation. make usage of every part of the animal once you kill it (including hide, bones, and meat). overhunting should only be done for population control. it is normal for animals to die in the wild and hunting does not interfere with that natural phenomena.

certain animal species should be left to go extinct, especially ones that cannot survive on their own in the wild. extinction is a natural thing. however, animals shouldn't be hunted or forced to extinction.

In 2007, Livejournal capitulated to the "pedophilia and sex crimes!" cries of (hate group) Warriors 4 Innocence, and you know what communities got shut down? Slashfic communities. Sexual assault survivor support communities. Authors who'd written non-smut m/m fic even got caught up in it. It was DEVASTATING to fandom spaces. I think pretty much everyone knew at least one person whose account was literally DELETED, or were a member of a community that was wiped off the map because they were considerate enough to include topics like "sexual assault" or "BDSM" in the profiles under the badly-named category of "interests" to indicate that posts on said blogs or communities may include discussion of things like that. Even if it was for a SUPPORT group. And it was because a group of religious bigots came to LJ and said essentially "EVERYONE thinks it's gross and that it's promoting CSA, we should ban it."

Like, strikethrough and boldthrough were a large part of what propelled AO3 out of a more unfocused conversation on one person's blog about hosting a site INTENDED for fandom content, into being an actual archive and nonprofit. And it's a large part of why you won't find AO3 banning topics that you find "gross".

Censorship is authoritarian and it will ALWAYS have more collateral damage than you can imagine.

Going to add that fiction which had sexual abuse and communities which played around with it as a writing topic are the very things that protected me from irl sexual abuse when I was a teenager. I was in a dicey situation, and realized that while my situation did not match up to any of the superficial or textbook cases mentioned in passing (if at all) through school, it matched up a LOT to what I'd learned about irl sexual abuse through works of fiction and the rhetoric of my communities. I got out of that situation and dodged what was, in retrospect, one hell of a nasty bullet. If it hadn't been for that "nasty" fiction and those "nasty" communities, I would very likely have been abused, and subject to further violence spiraling out from that abuse.

I had a friend. We were 12. We had just discovered fanfiction and were obsessed. We read anything and everything we could get our hands on. One of the stories we read was a "pedo fic." It exposed us to scenarios and language that hadn't ever been touched on in Sex Ed at school or with our parents. To be frank, it "corrupted our young minds with topics we shouldn't have to deal with." It also gave my friend words to finally describe why her neighbor creeped her out so much. "He's creepy and weird" gets a 12 year old scolded and lectured on being nicer. "He's a sexual predator" gets adults asking questions and involving the cops. Her neighbor "moved away."

Censorship is pro-pedo and anti-child-safety. There is no communicating what's wrong if there are no words to describe what's happening. Bad things will happen whether you have the words to ask for help or not. Censorship takes those words away.

A reminder that one of the most important books out there is a "pedo book." In fact it's literally a pedo book. It's about a pedophile.

It's called Lolita and it's the book that forced people to start confronting pedophilia and CSA instead of "keeping it between us" or just whispering it to make up excuses.

And?

It makes the CSA abuser a sympathetic character. On purpose. Because it's from his perspective.

The whole idea was to let people see him justifying himself while he committed these unspeakable acts. The whole point was to see how he's not a bad guy, really, see how much he loves her? See what he does for her? See how ungrateful she is? Because the point was that nobody, absolutely nobody, proudly says "I rape children!" and walks around wearing a shirt that says CHILD SEX ABUSER. They all have a thousand reasons why they're right. The point was to force people to see how "not a bad guy, really" committed these horrific, monstrous acts, and was sure he was in the right, or at least wasn't wrong.

It's a disgusting, horrifying, awful, vitally important book that, in the end, actually protected children. And it should be on every library's shelves.

I will genuinely try to frame this as gently and politely as I possibly can(I know that I can come off strong when I talk about these things, but that’s only because I’m very passionate, not because I am trying to be rude to and hurt anybody), but holy baloney, reading through the “tw misogyny” tag on this blog is such a letdown. Obviously it’s not the admin’s fault, of course, but the fact that there are more takes going “it’s okay to like the male characters” and “people shouldn’t harass others for liking/shipping the male characters” than “the male characters are overwhelmingly given more attention and focus than the female characters and that is a problem that needs to be addressed” is extremely disappointing. It feels like a lot of people care more about absolving themselves of misogyny than actually understanding and criticizing misogyny. Like you’re allowed to like the male characters, and nobody is stopping you. But when the male characters are largely favored over the female characters even in a game about women, then that is a serious problem. And it’s not a problem that is unique to Project Sekai, either. Across the vast majority of fandoms, male characters tend to be more popular and loved by the fans, and female characters tend to be more ignored, looked down upon, and hated. It’s not an isolated occurrence, no, it’s a broad pattern that needs addressing.

But whenever people(usually female fans) point this very simple and straightforward fact out, we always get responses like “well then just make your own fanfics/fanart and stop complaining already” or “well most fans are straight women/gay men anyway so it’s justified” or “well most female characters are badly written so of course they’re going to be liked less” even though this happens even in fandoms for stories centered around women, where women are three-dimensional characters, who are written as people and not as sex objects and props. Even if the male character is as flat and as dry as a pinup made of cardboard, fans will still favor him and flesh him out and pour depth into him through headcanons and fanfics and AUs and the like, but female characters are generally just ignored or dismissed as “uninteresting” and “badly-written” even if they’re not. And sometimes we get accused of hating on yaoi fans or saying that nobody should like the male characters, when that’s not even remotely the case, just because so many people refuse to unpack their own deeply-rooted and internalized biases. And as someone who really does enjoy female characters and prefer them to male ones, and who enjoys Project Sekai specifically because it’s centered around women(although that’s of course not the only reason that I like it, before anyone gets it twisted), it is really disappointing to see people shove aside all the female characters in favor of four men, when the female characters are just as complex, deep, and interesting as them, if not more so. And even if they weren’t, you can still flesh them out and project what you want onto them the same way most of fandom does for their favorite men. It’s really not that hard to understand, but I guess that for some reason some people would rather obfuscate the situation to make it more complicated than it is, and accuse the fans who do acknowledge misogyny in fandom of things that we never did say, all so that they can ignore the issue at hand and deny accountability.

That’s all, I’m sorry that this ask was so long, I just felt the need to make my voice heard. I’m not out to attack or fight with anyone or anything, but when I see certain things being said it just…scratches a nerve…and I just have to say something. Hi, I’m back with the fandom misogyny discourse. I promise that this ask will be my last, for now at least. Anyway, it really bothers me when people say things like “I wish there were more boys in the cast” or “I wish the cast was equal instead of majority female” or otherwise complain that there are too many girls. I saw a few people saying that they want a new unit to be made in the update that is all-male. It annoys me greatly because, while I completely understand people wanting more male characters in rhythm/idol games, the thing is…most of our media in general is already male-dominated, and female-dominated stories(especially ones that aren’t just sleazy sexualized/harem/male gaze garbage) are much rarer in comparison. And often, when we do finally get these stories, people complain about the cast being so heavily skewed in favor of women, and that the story is “sexist against men” or that it should be “fixed” by having more men, because people are uncomfortable with a story that simply has women in the center because it goes against what we’ve been taught(that men are the main characters of the universe and women are secondary and exist as love interests for men/to be in the background). Despite the fact that nobody would ever even think of complaining about a story that has mostly men in its main cast, because men are allowed or even expected to lead a story whereas women are not.

As a female writer myself who writes stories with predominantly female casts, I have often faced this backlash myself as well, with people complaining that my stories are inferior because they don’t have enough male main characters, and that they won’t appeal to everyone because they’re so overwhelmingly female(even though if the roles were reversed and my cast was predominantly male, nobody would complain or even notice). Because stories for/about men are considered universal and capable of being enjoyed by everyone. While stories for women are considered inferior/niche and only enjoyable by women. Women are expected to care about men’s stories and see them as human beings, but men are not taught the same thing about women, and male audiences are considered more important(if not paramount) to cater to while female audiences are seen as lesser or a sign of the story’s poor quality(observe how anything that teenage girls like is ridiculed to the extremes, whether it’s actually good or not, while the things that men like are not).

But the fact of the matter is that I simply prefer writing majority female casts on a whole because I love women and female characters are more interesting to me. I am very invested in girls’ stories and stories about girlhood/womanhood, and women’s internal lives. I would be very upset and disappointed if my stories got popular and people either complained about the cast having too many women, or shunted all the women aside to focus on a background/minor man. We already have enough stories out there where a majority of the cast is male and what little female characters that are there only exist in the single digits, and 9/10 they’re only there to be romanced, sexually objectified/exploited, stereotyped, degraded, or killed. My male characters are at least treated with basic human dignity and respect, and the same holds true for most stories that have a predominantly female cast, including Project Sekai. It has a strong and well-developed cast of both men and women, it’s just that the women outnumber the men by a large margin, and for some reason people want to complain about that.

So when I see people make comments like that, as innocuous as it seems(I don’t think that all of the people who say that stuff are raging misogynists, at least not intentionally), it sorta raises an eyebrow, to say the least. Again, I totally understand that people want male characters in rhythm games. But if that is what they seek, then they should look towards rhythm games that already have an overwhelmingly male cast, like Enstars, or any other rhythm game that either has a majority male cast, or has a more equal, gender-balanced cast. But asking for a game that already has a largely female cast to include more male characters in order to “make room for men” and even out the gender scale…I don’t like that. No. Why does the gender scale even need evening out anyway? Is there really something so wrong with a game that has a mostly female cast? When we have tons of mostly male(and frankly quite sexist) casts in video games already? The fact of the matter is that we live in a male-centric society where men are represented more in our media than women, because art imitates life. What we need is actually MORE media with female-centric casts. Not LESS. And asking for media with a mostly female cast(especially if the target demographic is girls and women) to accommodate men will never, ever, EVER be the solution. Not every story needs to be about men or “needs more men”. Stories about mainly women need appreciation, too, and they deserve to be loved and respected as they are without being made to change themselves to suit mainstream society’s whims. Welp, that’s all. i think this is an incredibly ignorant and narrow-minded way of thinking about misogyny.

if we acknowledge women for what they are (an oppressed class), then complaining that you want more male characters is inherently misogynistic, and only liking said male characters is misogynistic

using examples: if you were to take a piece of media with predominantly black/poc characters, and throw your arms up and say “why can’t we have more white characters? i only like the white ones.” then you’d be called racist rightfully so. if you were to take a piece of media with primarily lgbtq+ characters and complain about the lack of cishet characters, you’d be called queerphobic. if you saw a show with a primarily disabled cast, and complained about the lack of able-bodied people, you would be called ableist. why is this mindset not extended to women?

misogyny is not just the blatant hatred of women. it’s the hatred of anything related to women and femininity. it is the hatred of female bodies and female expression. it is the hatred of female liberation and control. these same concepts apply to ALL forms bigotry. it doesn’t have to be explicit to be there

if you cannot give me one valid reason as to why you want more cisgender male characters, then i will go on believing you’re misogynistic. attraction does not count. you can enjoy characters that you aren’t attracted to. the only reason i can see for why you’d even care about the lack of male characters, is that you dislike women, and believe they get in the way. you would see the addition of more female characters as a waste. you don’t think women should have their own stories divorced of male prevalence.

the cast of project sekai is predominantly female, 4:1. do you think that the reason male characters get more love from the fandom, despite fem characters having infinitely more depth and content surrounding them, is simply because they’re better? it’s misogynistic. there’s no question about it

and the last thing i want to add:

being a victim of oppression does not make you an expert on the subject. it doesn’t give you ultimate authority. you must understand and observe how bigotry is ingrained into our lives, systems, and culture in order to understand it. misogyny-affected people are absolutely capable of being misogynistic themselves. the funny thing about bigotry is that it convinces victims of its own attacks that THEY are horrible, wrong, disgusting and misplaced.

i know this is a silly rant, on account of it being about a video game, but what i’ve said here holds true for all fandoms and communities.

whether or not you agree with what i’m saying, take it into account and learn from it. pick up some feminist literature. become more feminist.

I think this post sums up my thoughts really well, if very very angrily in response to people who misinterpret the intended meanings of the terms maliciously and on purpose

I could see the case for moving to language that is more direct about communicating that we are the primary targets (some have made good arguments for transfeminized/non-transfeminized as a way to capture this), and I'm not about to make a case against moving to language like that

but I do want to go to bat for why I personally like the A in TMA, building on what I said in that post. maybe I'm just discourse poisoned, but I do take backlash at times as a sign that something holds a level of power

it feels telling to me the way that so many people do want to be TMA so bad, and I think it's because it takes their right to appropriate our experiences away from them. the A, to me, centers how transmisogyny impacts us, our lives, our places in society, how we are treated, our thought patterns, how we are oppressed. if we go to bat for it, I think the A could become a representation of what it's like to actually be us, in a way that can't be appropriated so long as we hold our ground about it

to be a target is one thing, but to be affected by being a target is to be harmed, reshaped, changed. I think the A makes our experiences, our hurt, our oppression, unignorable, and it lays bare that what people are trying to appropriate is not just being unexemptably a target, but the effects on us that come with being so. it moves the concept of being a target from the abstract to the material, the human. it provides a platform for us to define what it's really like to be Affected day in and day out

The fixation on who wants to be TMA is revealing. If the framework is materialist, then the question isn't about desire, it's about the material reality of harm. People do not want transmisogyny to apply to them; they're recognizing that it does, because bigotry doesn't check your birth certificate or ID. The transmisogynist stalker who targeted me did not stop to confirm my identity before acting on his hatred. A cis woman harassed in a bathroom isn't "approprating" trans experiences; she is a victim of the same system that polices gender nonconformitty. To frame this as "appropriation" is to ignore how oppression actually functions: it is messy, overlapping, and often indiscriminate.

The claim that TMEs can "check out" of transmisogyny because they are not the "really Affected targets" is a coping mechanism disguised as analysis. It assumes that harm is only valid if it's intended for you, as if the impact of violence depends on the perpetrator's accuracy. But oppression doesn't... work that way. Balbir Sinh Sodhi did not die because he was Muslim; he died because a bigot saw him as one.

The material reality is that transmisogyny does not just target or affect trans women–it targets anyone perceived as transgressing gender norms, and that perception is often arbitrary. To insist that only trans women/trans fems are "really" affected is to erase the experiences of everyone else who suffers under this same system.

And if the "A" in TMA is meant to capture the inescapable day-to-day reality of being a target, then why doesn't mousidy actually describe what that looks like? the argument hinges on the idea that trans women/trans fems experience transmisogyny in a way that is qualitatively different from others, but it never defines that difference beyond circular reasoning: "You're not really affected because you're not us." That's not materialism–it's essentialism in a trench coat!

The parallel to misogynoir that anon brings up is telling. We don't say that only Black women are "really" affected by misogynoir because we recognize that anti-Blackness and misogyny intersect in ways that harm all Black people, regardless of gender. Transmisogyny isn't just about being a trans woman; it is about the system that enforces gender conformity. If the goal is to center the most marginalized, then the framework should reflect that without erasing the fact that the same system harms others too.

so here is the question: is TMA/TME a tool for solidarity, or is it a way to draw a line between who deserves to be heard and who does not? because right now, it seems to be the latter.

Trapped between being militantly pro-choice and deeply concerned about the erosion of abortion rights and thinking the way that people talk about pregnancy/motherhood/children on this hellsite is pretty gross and borderline misogynistic.

To expand on this a bit more, at the risk of sounding like That Guy, a lot of people on here don't seem to realize the right to choose to have children has been something that's been forcibly taken away from people as well. I live in an area with a pretty large Native population, a group that has, historically and even to this day, been subject to forced sterilization. They're not the only ones, either. Other ethnic minorities, disabled people, etc have all been subject to eugenics and had their reproductive rights undermined in the other direction to promote what dominant society considers a """pure""" population. Even a lot of the modern anti-abortion movement still disproportionally favors making more white people above all else. Saying that not having children is always the right choice and that keeping a child is always the bad, regressive choice, frankly, comes from a position of privilege. Like everything else, it depends.

Pro-choice goes both ways, and everyone should have the right and medical support behind whatever option they choose without discrimination. Simple as.

And can we please stop this over-the-top disgust over the bodies of pregnant people please please please y'all are so happy to defend all sorts of disabilities but then dissolve into a misogynistic froth when pregnancy comes up
