'The Secret to Composition' tutorial

I just went back through over 900 liked posts and dug out all the art tutorials so i can keep track of them. I guess this might be helpful to some of you guys, so here you go.
Here we go then!
Freeware
Alchemy - this is a really fun program. You play around making abstract shapes until you start to see something in them, kind of like a Rorschach test. Then you use the shapes as a base to draw it from. MyPaint - a pretty decent painting program that also has the benefit of working on Unix systems. openCanvas 1.1 - I havenāt used openCanvas in years but it was a nice program with a pretty unique feel to it. ArtRage - Only used this a couple of times donkeyās years ago just before I got oC, but Iāve heard good things about it. The GIMP - In a similar vein to Photoshop, but free. I couldnāt get on with it when I tried it out a few years ago, but itās pretty popular and is available on Unix systems and Macs.

Easytoon:Ā Easy tool to make black and white animations. (Download not tested - be careful if you choose to download! Here is another download optionĀ for the program) - TUTORIALS FOR THE PROGRAM
Not-free-ware
Photoshop - Standard painting fare. Probably the most flexible program (particularly the latest versions) but not designed to act in a ānaturalā way. If youāve used it for painting versus something like Painter you know what I mean. Who the fuck pays for it though? Google āPhotoshop tumblr masterpostā and take your pick. Paint Tool Sai - Far more affordable and definitely worth paying for if you can. The brushes are very decent (especially when theyāve been tweaked a little), the gui is simple and intuitive, and I dare you to find a program with which making smooth lineart is easier. Corel Painter - My program of choice for most things. More tools than you could ever possibly use and pretty cheap on a student license, providing that you can prove youāre a student! Itās got a few bugs but if you want realism or a more natural feel than PS or SAI this is the program for you.

Varying Your Body Types

I think itās very important for artists to vary the types of bodies they draw! Not only does it add visual interest and diversity, but different body types can enhance your characters! (Plus itās more realistic; when was the last time you walked down the street and everyone had the same body type?) I know I have a hard time drawing different bodies, especially with men, so Iām making this tutorial to teach myself as well (Iāve heard the best way to cement learning something is to teach someone else).
So! Bodies! Iām going to use women for this tutorial because I feel they have more variety in their bodies. One of the most obvious ways bodies differ is in their amount of fat.

On average, people store fat mostly in core areas like the bust, the waist, and the hips. It is important to remember that people gain and lose weight differently, and this is true no matter how fat or skinny one gets. However, these are common places people store fat:
The face and neck can be immediate indicators as to how much fat the rest of the body has; when someone loses or gains weight, itās initially obvious in the face. This is possibly because the eye is (usually) drawn first to the face.
In addition to differences in the amount of body fat, bodies vary vastly in their proportions. The two main ways they differ is skeletally and in fat distribution. The hip to shoulder ratio is skeletal, and someone with wider shoulders might look more powerful or masculine, and someone with wider hips might look more grounded or feminine.
The torso to legs ratio is also a skeletal ratio. Someone with long legs in comparison with their torso might look taller than someone of the same height with a long torso, and they might also look skinnier.
(I say as I finally get some visual variety all up in here.)
Because the hips are also one of the places with the most weight gain in women, large hips can also be a matter of fat distribution. The three main places where the fat ratio really matters is in the bust, the waist and the hips (making up the core of the body).
While men usually carry weight in the belly area, the fat distribution can really vary with women. Some women carry more weight in the bust, some in the belly, and some in the hips/thighs. Some women carry more weight in two areas, like the bust and the hips, the bust and the belly, or the belly and the hips. Some women show no obvious bias to any area and carry weight equally.

Taking into account skeletal ratios, fat distribution patterns, a vast human weight range, muscle tone and age, there are endless permutations of body types. It would be a shame if you used only one!

Make sure it is set to Layer, and either turn on Auto-Select or hold down ctrl, then click on the offending line.

Lately Iāve been asked several times on how I was able to get undocked windows in SAI, so I thought Iād share how I did it. Itās super easy!
1. Here you have your default panel layout of Paint tool SAI enabled.Ā
2. Close the program. Go to wherever folder your Paint Tool SAI is installed. Find a file called āmisc.iniā, and click to open it in any text editor of your choice. Notepad should suffice.
3. Scroll down to locate āPopup panelsā underneath Panel settings. Search for āPopupPanels = 0āĀ
4. In order to change the embedded panels to pop-up windows, simply change the ā0ā to ā1ā. Then [Ctrl + S] or [File > Save] to save the settings.Ā
5. Re-open SAI, and now you have undocked pop-up windows! YAY.
6. You can move them all around and resize them to your heartās content. AWESOME.Ā
