Ex Post Facto
Tuvok’s persona log, stardate 48611. The investigation on the Banean homeworld has reached its conclusion. Lieutenant Paris was accused of murder based on a memory‑transcription procedure that the Baneans consider both efficient and definitive. I found it neither.
A mind meld with Lieutenant Paris proved necessary. Rather than the empty space one may have expected, instead his thoughts possess a level of kinetic activity that required considerable discipline to navigate. I maintained composure throughout, though the experience was, at moments, reminiscent of attempting meditation in a room containing an unstable warp core.
Given the Lieutenant’s obvious stress and agitation during the meld, I considered momentarily that the victim’s pet dog’s assessment of the situation might be more accurate than Paris’ own. An irony really, given that the dog ultimately helped prove the identity of the murderer.
Ultimately, we uncovered a conspiracy whereby Lieutenant Paris’ brain was to be used as a vehicle for smuggling military data. Once this was established, the Baneans withdrew the charges with what they described as “regret.” I did not inquire further.
I will meditate before my next duty shift. The day has been… intensely illogical.
