this is very long you have been warned. i have no idea why i wrote it in second person, it started like that and then it was too much to turn back.

they are your first memories, and they are special. you are not aware yet, how you are different. you think the world waves at everybody and you must wave back. your dreams are full of light, and you wish upon stars and wishbones. you are the apple of your father’s eye, and you think your extended family has the coolest job in the world. the difference in status isn’t something that you notice, while hugging the girl that looks so very much like you — but she has prettier eyes. you’ve always noticed that. she always has prettier eyes, and her dresses always slightly more perfect than yours. you make time for her, always. you influence her, but you also accommodate her whims, her softness entertains you. she stares at the flowers and think about how and when they bloom, but you ask how they grow: from the root, to the seasons. you don’t realise it yet, but this fundamental difference will inform your future.

you can read now, and your ears are keener. adults are to be listened to, not ignored. you are close to him, your cousin. you think he’s amusing, and like any young child he is a standard to observe, but you see how he is hurried away often, you start to see what he stands to inherit, the responsibility and weight of a crown. at first, you are thankful that you are not him. your life will go on as you please, with fanni, with olimpia.
it doesn’t take long until you begin to notice how they occasionally separate the three of you. even the governesses. you notice the paper your father is reading. it lists fanni’s elementary achievements like it is a high glory, when there is none of yours. you ask him why, and his perturbed expression is not familiar to you. this time he explains how the world works — how hierarchy works.
you notice things more after that, how public appearances with fanni renders you nearly invisible. she could wear something less chic in your opinion, put in less effort and still outdo you. just like that. her smallest victories are celebrated, your flaws emphasise her strengths. attention-seeking behavior, you soon learn, works against you. the rules are somehow different, so you try to seem humble instead — it’s not easy, your young emotions are fickle things. this understanding takes you into maturity, and you mature much quicker than the average person by sheer force of will.
the first lesson you teach yourself: nobody gets to choose where or whom they are born to, it is the only thing that is the luck of the draw. you repeat it in your head like a mantra, each time you are reminded cruelly that you, by default, are not as good as your cousins.
the second: you are better. you are quicker, sharper, shrewder and better. being overlooked is something that shouldn’t be happening. you remember this with the embers of rage simmering within you — that it is unfair. you want them to see that, to see you.
the third and most important: daydreams are worthless. ideas are just shattered lightbulbs until you make them tangible. you don’t wish upon stars or wishbones anymore, you set goals, and view them as mountains at your gate that you greet each time you step out, where fanni just sees camera flashes. she can make her missteps, the public will forgive her or the palace will cover it up, but not you. you have one shot that you have to make stick.

you are used to being passed over. people speak to you at events for a little while when you make conversation and say witty things, it comes easily to you, you make them laugh, but you’re just a pretty face. they’re more interested in what your cousins have to say. it doesn’t surprise you, but it also doesn’t mean you accept it. you take it in your stride with a graciousness that you’ve perfected over time. the green-eyed beast in you grows. it’s hungry and you keep it fed, just enough that it doesn’t devour you whole.
you perfect everything you can with an unrivalled hunger. you educate yourself on topics interesting to men. you’ve always had an intrigue for processes more than outcomes so this isn’t a hard-sell. you position yourself well, learn the ins and outs of networking, you learn about people in ways you haven’t quite searched introspectively yet. you eventually become more well-connected than the royal family. that is not to mean that people don’t know them, there is a difference between being known by many, and being trusted and favored by many. you have become useful to levente, but that’s not enough for you. you want your own stripes. your own path. fanni is content to prop levente up, you are not, even though you do it well. you have become charming, and you participate with civilians, you laugh with them, they find you relatable. you’ve found your niche.

travel suits you. you are isolated from the others. you get to reinvent yourself. be yourself. you like being in the thick of things, causing actionable ripple effects, feel like you’ve built something with your bare hands. it’s a kind of power you’ve never felt before.
he will remember this as the time you fell for each other, but you remember the beginning as something less than that. he was your target. you saw him as a notch on your resumé. a ticket out of your version of obscurity. you dived into his line of sight with your eyes wide open. you hadn’t counted on him being of a different breed. he wasn’t raised like you, which became clearer the more time you spent with him. you’re surprised, you’d met him before and believed you’d had him pegged. he is nothing like your expectations and nothing like the only other crown prince you know well. you tell yourself your interest is purely educational. his persistence irritates you, but you’re becoming addicted to his attention. before long you find yourself inextricable from the fact that he has weaselled his way into your heart. it is the first time you’ve been duped into thinking you have the upper hand, and bested at your own game.

word spreads fast, your courtship is a fairytale. everybody wants to get to know you now. you meet the family five months before he proposes. his father is sober, a quiet commanding presence, but his mother watches you like a hawk. her warmth will be hard-won, he’d schooled you well on that, but reality is harsher than mere warning. it is the first time you find that your intellect, sweet words and a dazzling smile won’t help you. her dislike grates at your nerves, and once again you’re that overlooked little girl. you hate that someone has the power to make you feel this way. regardless of this, you marry him in the most beautiful wedding you could have ever imagined for yourself. scores of people celebrate you. you feel like you’ve finally arrived at your rightful place in the world. you feel loved by people you don’t know for the first time.
you are tense around his mother for the first few months in the palace, but he is close to his family and eventually you observe instead of seethe privately. she has earned her value, her substance is executed with more finesse and her story is similar to yours, with the exception of the word princess to her title at birth. you work harder to earn her trust, to prove you are a worthy successor, not just the wife of one and eventually she prepares you for the scrutiny that is about to come. the time you spend alone together helps. your pride had prevented you from seeing her as a worthy mentor, but now you are grateful for every tool you are given — every door she opens for you. there is nothing quite like having an impressive introduction made for you to a room full of movers and shakers by johanne glücksburg. until then you had been capable, competent, near-perfect, but now, with thore and the danish, you will be formidable to boot. you take her initiatives and add them to yours, you strive to improve them. you attend thore’s meetings with him, you attend johanne’s whenever you can and make sure you always have useful input.
thore begins to worry about you so you learn to delegate. you travel with your husband, years pass in relative bliss. you don’t even notice how fulfilling life has become. your allegiance has shifted with the change in your name. your cousins have become voices at the end of a receiver, when you do meet at the next wedding, you meet them as their equal.

you are 29 when you get the news. a life grows inside of you, something you secretly believe you are ill-equipped for. you start worrying about everything. your plans, what the child will be coming into with strife beginning in the surrounding regions. when you meet her however, your world tilts on its axis. you experience growth of a different kind, suddenly you’re ready to fight tooth and nail for the purest thing in your life that you love so fiercely. it gives your work more meaning, and it shows.

nobody wanted you to leave copenhagen for phuket, but you employed the soft touch and made a case for yourself. you told them it was for family, for viggo, and sten, who needed to be shown more support than they are being given, but in reality you believe it is a mistake that the glücksburgs’ position in the program isn’t bolstered more. it would also be the first time leaving your daughter. you steel yourself and pick duty, but fall apart in the plane anyway. no one will know you stayed on the video call for five hours with her after that.
