Idea: Kistrel is probably not immortal, even though he is a big magical friend. He has a soul, because I fucking said so, so we’ve got a giant intelligent magical spider running around on the Fugue Plane, wanting absolutely nothing to do with the minions of Lolth that usually scoop up postmortem intelligent spiders, cause... I love him.... but he is not so good at hunting, my poor useless glowing baby.

Arizan finds him.

Arizan ends up standing in front of Kelemvor with a giant spectral spider arguing that technically this is a temple guardian. He lived in my basement, Kelemvor. You know. The basement that was also my shrine to you. The one that you gave me the power to make hallowed ground. Temple Guardian.

And that’s how Kistrel joins the ranks of the defenders of the City of Judgement.

[Are you referring to Valindra? Because if so, NOPE. No one EVER destroys Valindra’s phylactery. Valindra is still around a century later when Neverwinter Online’s timeline starts. Valindra is still around and terrorizing Thayans into investigating things as of the Chult storyline 12 modules later.

If you’re referring to Arklem, I can’t actually remember what happens to him, but it looks like something did get rid of him in the past century, so. That’s SOMETHING, at least.]

Neutral Tiny Outsider

Pathfinder Bestiary 4, pg. 220

This friendly-looking little bird is a Psychopomp, a creature tasked with escorting lost and wayward souls to the afterlife, or getting souls already in the Waiting Room Of The Damned sorted into their proper paradise (or punishment). The Nosoi is mostly responsible for the paperwork, though, flitting to and fro as they record all happenings in Purgatory, carrying messages back and forth between more powerful Psychopomps and other outsiders, and sorting the immense amounts of information flowing into and out of Purgatory in regards to the hundreds of thousands of souls it processes each day.

The Nosoi aren’t particularly adept at combat, dealing even 2 damage requiring quite a bit of luck, but as mailmen and messengers of the dead they have a few handy functions that can make them too useful to fight. They can turn invisible at will, use Speak With Dead three times per day, and can unleash a Sound Burst once per day to stun everyone around them. They are also experts at pacifying the hordes of dead that march through Purgatory, able to use Haunting Melody to cause all living and undead beings (who are usually immune to mind affecting effects) to placidly stay still and listen, either calming emotional spirits… or keeping enemies still for more powerful agents of death to deal with.

Far from humorless, emotionless mail-bots, Nosoi are social and chatty, often conversing with one another in their otherwise silent libraries as they share stories to liven up their duties. They’ll gladly talk up a storm with anyone that engages them in conversation so long as the chat doesn’t interrupt their work, but even that bit can be brushed aside if one offers the creature some food. Nosoi do not need to eat but delight in the sensation, and can be bribed into handing over juicy bits of information with a juicier treat. As chatty scribes of the afterlife, they can be an excellent source of “You didn’t hear this from me, but…” types of stories.

my fave bit of black dog folklore is that in some folklore there is a belief that the first person buried in a cemetery stays there and doesn’t cross over and helps other spirits move on and protects them from evil spirits, now naturally people want to avoid this fate for their loved ones and themselves so they would sometimes bury a dog first and it would return in the shape of a big black dog and protect the newly dead from evil spirits and occasionally the living as well
