he watched as the girl provided tulip the love she almost NEEDED constantly, jokes on him for raising such a brat. he listened to the girl but was UNFAMILIAR with the camp. he knew names, faces — not camps. but even the services he provided weren’t always ASKED by camps but rather rouges like himself. he nodded his head, ❝ i’m john and this is tulip. ❞ he replied, grin now dissolving. ❝ the sun setting soon and i think axel and elliot would like you home soon. ❞ he added eyes meeting the horizon line. ❝ would you like me to walk you home ?? ❞
“tulip is a really pretty name! back in scotland, my neighbours dog was called daisy and then they got a cat and named it petunia - but they never had a tulip. they just really liked flowers, i guess,” she smiled up at the rugged, serious man as she petted the affectionate dog. tulip put it’s small paws on her shoulders and proceeded to lick her face as she laughed and play-wrestled with her - trying to maintain her balance. “oh, i don’t like with axel and elliot, and they don’t live together - or at the suites. i live with my camp, but...” she looked towards the horizon and noted the setting sun, “it might be nice if you could walk me home - i’m... sort of scared of the DARK. and of the dead ones.”

❝ lemony snicket is cool n’all — like, i got KINDA bored after book nine. ❞ he admitted while looking at the book in the girl’s hands. he shrugged his shoulders as his CURIOUS expression transformed into a smug grin. ❝ but the greatest young adult saga is… hold on — ❞ he slung his backpack in front of him and dug inside where he retrieved a copy of THE CRIMSON CHRONICLES written by mommy dearest. ❝ the crimson chronicles by dahlia quill but i like to call her mom. ❞ his chin lifted proudly especially as he pointed at the now faded golden sticker in the top right corner. ❝ see that ?? that’s a printz award sticker. that’s a really big deal. i’ll let you borrow it sometime but it’s about zombies n’stuff which is kind of funny since they actually ended up becoming real. ❞
“well i haven’t read it,” she replied, frowning at his COCKY grin, “if it’s so GOOD then why haven’t i heard of it?” she sassed back, crossing her arms across her chest. “i never saw anyone with those books and my dad’s library was the size of the one in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - with ladders and everything, and i never saw it.”
she wrinkled her nose, annoyed by his smugness, “my dad wrote books too, really big books that went to universities all over the world.” she developed an instant dislike of the boy all of a sudden - surly and quick to anger, her frown deepend. why did he get to have his family around and she didn’t? why did she have to be alone? her dad was smart too, he wrote books - her mam was clever too but ellie was too young to really understand what she was doing with her camera and photoshoots and clients. it made her so mad, the thought that she wasn’t ever going to see them again and HE had his mam right here - she felt herself tearing up unexpectedly as she stamped her foot down ( how could she be a teenager when she was really such a child? ) “i don’t WANT to read it! it’s about those... those dead things that killed my dad - that’s not fun !” she wiped her eyes on the back of her sleeve, “it’s so STUPID to read about sad things when everything is already SAD anyway!”

Her lips formed an O shape, lips CURLING with realization. Best friend – it’d been some time since Beatrice had had one of THOSE. The detailed description of the man flowed perfectly from the little girl’s mouth; words carefully entwined and laced together to create the image of a LOVABLE man. “He sounds…NICE,” Beatrice supplied, feeling rather empty-handed. Her fingertips brushed past her forehead and pulled stray hair behind her ear. The IDEA of a grown man being best friends with a little girl was bewildering, but she’d already seen so many STRANGE things – another to add to the list wasn’t really groundbreaking. “Where is Axel now?” She found herself asking, both out of GENUINE curiosity and caution.
“he is actually, i think he likes to think he’s too TOUGH to be nice or something, but he’s always nice to me. i just can’t get him to READ to me,” she rolled her eyes, “he’s too stubborn.” ellie put the dry leaf in her book, the one she used for a bookmark, “but he’s really a big softie, he kind of reminds me of my big brother a little bit; he was ALWAYS too ‘tough’ for hanging out with me.” she felt a slight pang of homesickness, for her family in scotland - they HAD to still be there, she believed that - her mam and her brothers and her little brother or sister ( she hoped it was a girl ) “oh, i don’t know. off doing something, he lives not far from here but i’m not supposed to get inside without him there, even though i can because i can fit through the doggie door and scare him sometimes,” she gave a soft giggle at the latest memory, “oh, i’m elspeth allaway, but most people call me ellie or el - but elliot’s nickname is el as well so it gets kind of ... confusing sometimes, only if we’re in the same room though. what’s your name?”

“Is that the one with the aunt?” Ashley questioned, trying to recall it. “I think i liked that one. The puzzles and stuff… I always had a soft spot for Violet, myself. I wished i was nearly as smart and creative as she is.” She said with a small laugh, before shaking her head, turning her attention back to the girl before her. “Well i for one, appreciating the non-biting thus far.”
“yeah, aunt josephine. mam said that meryl streep played her and she was really good, but i never watched it. the movie, i mean,” elspeth smiled at the other girl, “violet is really smart, but klaus is a genius i think. i think sunny is practical and cute. i don’t think i could be so SERIOUS all the time, like violet and klaus.”

Beatrice hadn’t ASKED the teen anything, really – just given her a CURIOUS look after she’d walked in on the reading stranger. She was…confused, to say the least, but humored the girl regardless. “Oh – uh; who’s Axel?”
“axel is my best friend,” she replied easily, “or one of. he takes care of me sometimes and always brings me food because he thinks i’m too skinny.” she gave a light shrug, “he’s a bit of a butthead, but he’s my favourite boy in this town. most of the others are just gross." she wasn’t counting elliot, because it was still confusing to her how she could be a boy sometimes and then be a girl. they didn’t teach that back in scotland, but it didn’t really matter to her anymore. “but axel? he’s... really tall, and has dark hair and he’s almost 35 - but really grumpy. like all the time.” describing him was harder than she thought as she looked back down to her book; “but i don’t think he talks to everyone much. oh, and his last name is middleton. but that probably doesn’t help.”

❝ oh, i’ve heard of that, ❞ daphne remarks, staring at the book in the other girl’s hands. ❝ i’ve never actually read the books or watched the movie though, which SUCKS because i probably will never be able to, ❞ she shrugs. ❝ which book is it ? ❞
“it’s one of my favourites. the series, i mean. before i came over to the states a few years ago, my mam and dad was collecting them for me. one book for each dance competition i won,” she grinned, “it’s the wide window. the THIRD one. i have a few of them, you can... borrow them? if you want? and if you take care of them.”

there was no intent of killing today even if the cohaire ca-415 strapped in front of him was a bit OFF PUTTING. he needed to walk tulip because he knew that the little beagle pup sensed that her owner was PREPARING for a new house guest; a brother. name ?? TBA — the little girl’s reaction to the dog caused a small smile to grow on his pale complexion. he nodded his head, ❝ of course. ❞ he knelt down to the girl’s eye level, he ADJUSTED his rifle to rest behind his back. ❝ she loves being rubbed behind the ears. ❞ he too gave tulip a pat before looking back at the girl. ❝ are you out here all by yourself ?? ❞
“she’s really cute,” elspeth smiled - doing as directed and scratching the dog behind her soft ears, her short nails making little patterns as she rubbed across the pups snout, to the top of her head and all over her wriggly little chubby body. ellie had always liked how dogs seemed to be really wrinkly and fat when they were little - but they were just big balls of love really. “at the moment, yeah. i stay in the springhill suites most of the time, but sometimes i stay with a guy called axel, he gives me books and food. oh, an elliot ricker - i hang out with her a lot, even if she is an ass sometimes. what’s your name and what’s hers?”

italia couldn’t help but watch as the girl trembled. she wasn’t as fixated on the knife she held in her hands as she was at the tears in her eyes. even if it was because of debris, or because she was scared. her eyes wandered outside, the sun now setting completely over the area. and it seemed like the loud groan had been distracted by something else, as it became fainter. she didn’t have time to argue with her, or to kick her out. it wasn’t the best way to approach the situation anymore.
she closed the door, shushing the girl. “it’s too late to go out there now. sun’s gone down and the dead are about to get more active.” hand reached up to close the window blinds of all the small windows, locking the one the other had climbed into. “you can stay here for the night. there’s a bucket of water in the freezer. clean your eyes out with it. leave your knife on the counter.”
it didn’t bother her to leave her knife on the counter - slipping it into it’s hard leather sheath. her old one had been a tiny pocket knife, and axel bought her a new one to protect herself. she’d never used it. she didn’t want to use it, not really. she moved to the freezer, scooping a small pool of water into her hands and draining it into her stinging eye. it took a little bit of time but for a few “is this where you live?” she asked after a moment of incredulous disbelief, “it doesn’t seem too... SAFE.”
but then again, that was probably her fault. she pulled her pack from her back and opened it. “i have some food in my pack, you have have half of it. but not my books.”

“I didn’t make the rules, kid.” Elliot said, picking a sturdier branch and hanging herself upside down, knees locked and a lit cigarette dangling from her plump lips. She was the babysitter that parents didn’t want, but the kids kept requesting. Though with that thought considered, she was never the one asked to mind anybody’s anything, especially their kids. Her sister had been the trustworthy one, and she just the deviant who knew how to have fun. “In fact, I don’t think there were any rules.” Said thoughtfully, a drag taken from her cigarette as she swayed gently watching the world from her new upside down perspective. “Who says you can’t reach me? You’re not even trying.”
“no, i made the rules and you’re BREAKING THEM,” she taunted, trying to find a foothold that was slightly higher up so she could at least PUSH herself off it and reach the next branch. “and my arms aren’t long enough,” her frown was so deep it could have cracked her young face in half, “and i am trying, you ASS !”

“oh my god you have a PUPPY !” elspeth said with surprise, lowering her leg down from the tree which she was using as a make-shift ballet bar. “can i pat him? please? i haven’t seen one in so long.”
