a couple months ago, i made a goal to finish all of my drafts by the end of the year and, while i didn’t finish all of them, i finished 9 out of 13 and im still pretty proud of that.
finding motivation to write has been hard for me lately. but i’m making it a goal this year to hopefully be more active on this account.

your breath came out fast, panicked as you hurried along the corridor with your daughter’s hand in yours. it was starting to get dark outside, the street lights just turning on the illuminate the dark streets.
you weren’t sure how he had found the two of you - you had ran from your abusive ex and the father of your child just under a year ago and he was still determined to find you. even flying out of your country and into another didn’t deter him from the hunt.
you noticed an opening to a large building just in front of you and you hurried along, glancing over your shoulder to make sure no one was behind you before you pulled your daughter into the building in front of you.
when the door finally shut behind you, you flinched, hoping that he was far enough behind you to not hear that echo through the streets. but you had to take a break, bending down to catch your breath before standing straight back up. you looked around the building, noticing the front desk to the right and the long corridor in front of you. there wasn’t anyone around but you knew you needed to find some help before he found you.
“mommy? where are we going?” your daughter’s small voice pulled you back to the present and you sighed, kneeling down in front of her and pulling her jacket tighter around her.
“we’re going to find someone to help us, baby.” you whispered, pressing a quick kiss to her forehead before standing back up and grabbing her hand. “let’s go, just a little further.”
the two of you began your way down the long corridor, distancing yourself between the large doorway the longer you walked. the sound of the heavy door echoing through the hallway had you jumping, your breath hitching as you pulled your daughter around a corner, getting out of view. you were glancing over your shoulder again, not paying attention when you suddenly crashed into someone in front of you.
“oh, my gosh, i’m so sorry!” you gasped, facing forward again and promptly losing your breath when you saw who was in front of you. the man you had bumped into was gorgeous, with his long brown hair, glowing pale skin, and deep ruby eyes.
he seemed taken aback by your presence, his eyes locked on you and wide in awe as he took in your appearance. it took a moment for him to regain his composure. “no, i apologize. i wasn’t watching where i was going, either. i’m marcus.”
you huffed a laugh, ready to tell him your name, before the sound of footsteps approaching had you jumping again. you pushed your daughter in between you and marcus before turning back around just as your ex entered the same hallway.
“oh no.” you whispered, dread filling your veins. “i’m so sorry, can you please, please help me?”
marcus frowned now, his gaze jumping to the other approaching man before his eyes darkened. “of course. get behind me.”
“come here, baby.” you spoke to your daughter, gathering her in your arms before you took your place behind his back.
“can i help you?” marcus’ voice was firm now and your ex finally halted in front of him, his eyes narrowed on you where you stood. marcus easily stood a few inches over him, but that didn’t seem to deter your ex.
“look man, i’m not trying to cause any trouble. just stand aside, so i can handle our business.”
“handle your business?” marcus questioned. “not likely going to do that, i’m afraid. turn around and leave before you do something stupid.”
he laughed in marcus’ face, the sound not even remotely friendly. in a split second, your ex reached around marcus, grasping your daughter’s arm in his hand, making her scream. you gripped her back tightly, reaching to grab his arm with your free hand and digging your nails into his skin. “stop being difficult!”
“fuck off!” you screamed back. your grip on him loosened when marcus finally reacted, grabbing your ex’s face in his hands behind twisting his wrists. you gasped, shielding your daughter’s eyes as your ex dropped to the floor, lifeless.
marcus huffed from where he stood, stepping over the body like it was nothing before looking back at you. you were shocked, your eyes not leaving the body for a moment before you raised your gaze to the man in front of you, hoping you hadn’t left one danger and walked right into another one.
“i would say i’m sorry.” he murmured. “but i can’t say that i am. did you know him?”
“he’s my ex boyfriend… or was. and her father.” your voice was shaky as you answered marcus. “i’ve been trying to get away from him for months now.”
marcus assessed you for a moment, but you turned your attention back to your daughter. “are you okay, sweetheart?”
“i’m okay.” she nodded, speaking softly.
“i’m sorry for bothering you and for, you know, all that just happened.” you said to marcus. “i won’t tell anyone, i promise.”
he shook his head. “don’t worry about this. how would you like a place to stay for the night?”
you hesitated. your hotel was a pretty far walk from here and it was getting dark. but the man in front of you had just easily killed your ex, and while he didn’t seem to be a threat to your or your kid, you weren’t sure you could trust him.
he seemed to notice your hesitation. “i promise, i won’t harm you or your daughter. you just seem like you’ve had a rough night.”
you huffed a laugh. “yeah, i’d say that’s an understatement. we’ll stay for the night. thank you.”
and with that, your life was changed once again. you and marcus fell into an easy friendship at first, especially once you realized that he would never hurt you or your daughter in any way.
the castle became your new home and, while the existence of vampires was quite the shock, you wouldn’t have it any other way. you and your daughter were safe now, accepted in a way that you hadn’t been in a long time.
marcus adored your daughter and she adored him back. she followed him everywhere - to the throne room, his offices, anywhere she could get away with. and it wasn’t long before the two of you entered your own relationship, especially when you learned what you were to him.
aro and caius were thrilled to see how much marcus had brightened with you and your daughter now in his life. and you adjusted to your new life easily.
it was sometimes hard to forget all the trauma that had brought you here. but as you watched marcus and your daughter, watched the way that he loved her and you both so fiercely, you couldn’t find it in yourself to regret any of it.
after all, it had finally brought you and marcus to your happily ever after.

laughter rang through the air at emily’s house, the majority of the pack laughing at jared’s antics again. it was time for another pack night and you had arrived a bit early to hang out with emily and some of the other imprints before the boys arrived.
by now, most of them had arrived - aside from the few that were still out on patrol, including your imprint, embry. jared was entertaining then group for now, laughing and goofing off with seth occasionally joining in, while sam and paul grilled just out back.
it was turning out to be a fun night. so you weren’t exactly sure what was causing the cold, anxious feeling in your chest now.
you’ve had an anxiety and panic disorder for years now, and sometimes you still got panic attacks that seemed to just appear from nowhere. like now, you had been completely comfortable, just enjoying times with your friends when all of a sudden, you noticed that familiar, uncomfortable feeling start to prickle under your skin.
you tried to ignore it - the way that your pulse had begun to pick up pace and the way you were aware of every single beat in your chest. the way that your hands were beginning to sweat, your body cold in a way that it only got during panic attacks.
in the midst of your growing panic, you could see the worried looks that some of the boys were shooting your way now. you sighed deeply, picking at the skin around your nails. you had never had a panic attack around the pack before and the realization that embry wasn’t there with you was only making your panic worse.
“hey.” emily crouched down beside you suddenly, her browns eyes filled with concern. “are you okay? what’s going on?”

“okay, what do we do?” paul asked from somewhere in the background. “how do we calm her down.”
emily glared back at him before focusing her attention back on you. “it’s okay. how do you normally come back down from your panic attacks?”
the panic was making your brain fuzzy and you balled your hands, lowering your face down to your fists. “ugh, i don’t know! embry usually handles them. i don’t get them super often anymore.”
emily glanced back around at sam, quietly asking him how much longer embry would be. you tried not to focus on them, instead trying to focus on controlling your breathing. you counted silently in your head - 1, 2, 3, 4 inhale. 1, 2, 3, 4 exhale.
you jumped when someone’s hands came in contact with your back and your eyes flew open, only to connect with embry’s warm gaze. he looked concerned, his lips flattened into a soft smile as he knelt in front of you.
“hey, hey, you’re okay. deep breaths with me, okay?” he clasped your smaller hands in his warm ones, exaggerating his inhales so that you would match them. “good girl, keep going, okay?”
he broke eye contact briefly, just to tell the others to back off, before his attention was back on you. you could feel the panic receding, your mind becoming more clear and your heart settling back into a more steady pace. “there you go. you okay? what happened?”
“not sure.” you huffed, pulling one of your hands back to brush your hair out of your face. “just hit me out of nowhere.”
“that happens, it’s all good.” embry stood from where he was crouching before pulling up a chair beside you and sitting back down. he pulled you as close as he could to himself before pressing a kiss to your forehead.
“it’s embarrassing.” you mumbled, glancing back to the pack and the imprintees who had made their way outside.
“nah.” he reassured. “it’s just something that happens. they understand.”
you only hummed in response, turning into his warmth for another moment. “okay, i think i’m good. we should probably get back out there.”
“hmm, yeah probably.” he sighed, before smiling down at you. he pulled you closer to him, gathering you in his arms and pressing two short kisses against your lips. “or we could spend just a few more minutes in here.”
you giggled, letting him kiss you again - really, who were you to deny him?

she couldn’t help but watch as the pretty receptionist, andrea, smiled at another one of the guests that made their way into the castle. her painted red lips were spread into a smile, blue eyes twinkling as she pointed a manicured finger in the direction that the visiting vampire had inquired about.
the receptionist made it look so easy, spitting out directions to different places in the castle so easily. the new queen of the volturi had been in the castle for months now and still struggled with getting around.
andrea always looked so well put together, too. her hair was always well done, not a single strand out of place. the makeup she wore was always flawless, showing off her already clear skin perfectly. it was hard to not compare herself to her - she was younger but it seemed like she had everything in her life so well put together. from their conversations, it seemed like she also afforded a well-managed apartment in the center of the city.
before the mate of the three volturi kings had been brought back to the castle from her normal life, she had struggled to make her bill payments on time every month. she lived paycheck to paycheck at a job that couldn’t care about her any less with a boss that pointed out every single thing that she did wrong.
and she knew that she should be grateful - she was now named queen, albeit in a world she knew hardly anything about. but it was hard to be grateful when all she could think about was how she wasn’t worthy of any of it.
her mates - caius, marcus, and aro - were perfect. and she wasn’t just saying that because of her love towards them, but because they genuinely were. they were quick thinkers, always organized and ready to adapt to any change or peril that this life could bring to them.
she had never been any good at change and, despite being fairly well educated by human standards, she couldn’t help that she still stumbled over her thoughts and words.

“definitely.” she nodded before turning away, trying not to walk away too fast but also desperate to get away from her friend and the insecure feelings that always seem to wreck her head.
she managed to hold in the tears until she got to the chambers she shared with her three mates. after shutting the door quietly behind her, she collapsed on the bed, silent tears making their way down her reddened cheeks. she wished she didn’t feel this way - the kings had made it very clear how they felt about her, but their words were never enough to quell the quiet insecurity she always felt.
she didn’t know how long she laid there for, feeling sorry for herself. it must have been long enough for her to fall asleep, because she startled awake and jumped up when she heard the large door to their room open behind her.
“oh, i’m sorry.” she sniffled, wiping her eyes quickly, trying futilely to hide the fact that she’d been crying. there was no use in that, the kings likely already knew before they’d entered the room. a large hand cupped her chin and gently turned her head towards them. caius was kneeled in front of her, his ruby red eyes filled with concern.
“why are you apologizing for crying?” he asked, his voice that same quiet tone that he used every time he spoke to her. it made her feel even worse - he spoke to her like she was something simple, something that would break easily if it wasn’t handled properly. “what’s wrong?”
she stumbled over her words, trying to find a quick excuse that would satisfy the three of them. when it was clear that she was trying to make excuses, aro reached forward, softly grasping her hand in his. she flinched at his touch, turning her head to hide her face from her mates.
“oh, my dear.” aro sighed heavily, his voice filled with sorrow. “i wish i could take these feelings from you.”
“and i wish i didn’t burden you with them.” the queen sighed back, feeling another wave of tears wash over her. she swallowed against the lump in her throat, willing her voice to be steady. “i hate that i feel this way. i know how each of you feel.”
marcus moved to sit beside her on the bed. “you are perfect to us, my love. in no way, do we think badly of you. you are not worth less than anyone to us.”
“you’re worth more.” caius followed marcus’ thoughts. “you are the most precious thing in the world, dearest. no matter your thoughts on your self or your perceived shortcomings. everything that you are is enough for us.”
“we just wish you could see it from our point of view.” aro nodded. “i hate how you think of yourself.”
“i’m sorry.” she whispered again, feeling a strange array of feelings. despite the loving words from each of her three mates, a part of her just couldn’t believe them. another tear fell from her eyes and marcus reached forward to swipe her cheek with his thumb.
“we’re going to start telling you this every hour of every day if that’s what it takes, love.” marcus grinned down at her softly now, his voice light with teasing. “you’re never going to know a moment of peace until you learn to accept how we feel.”
the queen of the volturi couldn't help the quiet laugh that escaped her now. “i’m not sure i could complain too much.”
she sighed again, reaching forward to squeeze caius’ hand, drawing her comfort from him. “i’m sorry that i have these insecurities. i’m trying not to be so hard on myself all the time. the three of you make it easier, but it’s something that i’ve struggled with for a long time.”
“we know.” aro told her, his face soft with understanding and acceptance. “and we know that it won’t be fixed overnight, but we’ll be there with you every day. and every time you have a bad thought, just come to one of us. we’ll help talk you out of it.”
she smiled at him, leaning forward on her knees to kiss him softly. “thank you.”
“thank you, tesoro.” he reached up, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “no matter what you think of yourself, you are our heaven. nothing will ever compare to you or be better than you again.”
he seemed so sure of his statement and with the way that marcus and caius agreed so earnestly, she couldn’t help but believe it a little bit. and hopefully, she’d believe many more of their statements in the future.

the pan in front of her sizzled as she placed another piece of chicken in it to cook. the air was filled with delicious aromas as she continued preparing dinner for her and her imprint, paul lahote. paul’s imprint loved cooking, having spent a lot of her time in the kitchen with her mother when she was little.
paul was due home from his patrol at anytime. it took some getting used to - finding out that he was a shifter and that he had to split his time between her and the pack - but now his imprint was well adversed to her new lifestyle. she loved the pack and the other imprintees.
when the rest of the pack met paul’s imprint, they were all surprised to say the least. compared to paul, his imprint was much quieter, soft spoken and slow to anger. she often liked to sit back and soak in the conversations around her, only piping in quietly here or there. paul, on the other hand, was rowdy. he had a short temper, a great sense of humor and was always ready to throw out a quick quip to another pack member.
she enjoyed being around them all - really, she did - but nothing compared to the quiet moments her and paul shared.
as she flipped the chicken around in the pan, she could hear the quiet click of the front door. she smiled to herself, knowing that paul was finally home with her again. his warm arms wrapped around her middle just a moment later and he nuzzled his face into her neck, pressing small kisses against her skin as he did. “hello beautiful. smells good in here.”

bright sunlight streamed in through the sheer curtains, illuminating the bedroom and shining on the small human asleep on the bed. the sun was just rising in volterra, signaling the start of a new day.
she was alone now - the girl was used to waking up by herself nowadays. it was a treat whenever her mate - marcus, one of the kings of the volturi - was still by her side after a night of sleep. usually when she woke by herself, she was fine - she was never alone for long, whether it was her king who came to find her or one of the many friends she had throughout the castle.
but this morning, she felt differently. she yearned for marcus’ company now, almost jittery with the thoughts of not being near him.
she sat up straight in bed, throwing the blanket off her legs and sliding into her slippers before racing towards the closet. it taken take her long to change into something appropriate for the throne room, just in case he was there, and then she was out the door, starting her search for her mate.
the throne room was the first room she checked, but when she didn’t see marcus, she made her way to the kings’ offices. aro was standing over some papers on his desk when she walked in, and he smiled brightly at the young girl. “what can i do for you, my dear?”
“sorry aro.” she blushed, leaning up against his doorway. “i was actually just looking for marcus.”
“ah, of course. no offense taken this time.” he teased. “i believe he was also on his way to look for you once our trial ended. you two have probably just missed each other.”
she smiled, thanking aro before leaving his office and heading back to their shared room. she smiled at some of her friends as she passed them, bidding them quick hello’s and goodbye’s before she finally made it back to her and marcus’ room.

he reached a hand up, sliding his thumb underneath her eyes, along her cheek and behind her ear as he tucked a strand of hair back behind it. “i have a couple of hours, yes, my dear.”
“then i’m stealing you for as long as i can.” she finally pulled back all the way, but no before rolling up on her toes to press a long, sweet to his lips. she tucked her hand into his before pulling his back towards the bed. “and i demand cuddles. after i eat my breakfast.”
“whatever my love demands.” marcus chuckled, following behind her willingly. he sat back against the pillows, making himself comfortable as she settled against him with her food on her lap. “i’m yours until i have to be pulled away.”
“how i despise those times.” she teased, twisting to kiss him again before returning to her meal.
marcus reached his hand up to thread it through her hair, pressing another kiss to the crown of her head. “as do i, my dear. as do i.”

your throat burned. shuffling and mumbled voices invaded your ears and you groaned, the sounds amplified and echoing around in your head louder than you’d ever experienced. you had no idea where you were and couldn’t recall how you had even gotten there - all you could tell was that you were in some dirty alley surrounded by a bunch of people that you didn’t know.
“you’re awake.” you jumped, moving quickly away from the man approaching you from behind. the boy smirked, his ruby red eyes narrowing in amusement as he continued his approach.
the boy didn’t seem much older than you were but it was obvious he was the leader of whatever was going on. you adverted your gaze for half a second, flinching when you saw the violence and deaths occurring around you. “what is this? where i am?”
“you’re in seattle.” he answered you, gesturing around the scene with spread arms. with more questions written plainly all over your face, the boy sighed and folded his arms. “that burn in your throat? means your thirsty. take your pick, there’s plenty of blood bags for you to pick from.”
“what?” you rubbed her throat, trying to quell the pain. “what the hell are you talking about? tell me what the hell is going on.”

carlisle, the blonde-haired leader gave her a tight-lipped smile. “we were lucky.”
“i doubt that.” she answered coolly, her hardened gaze passing over the group before landing on you and bree. “you missed a couple.”
you tensed, bree moving in closer to you as all eyes locked on the both of you. esme immediately jumped to your aid. “they’re innocent. we’ve offered them asylum.”
the blonde clicked her tongue. “that wasn’t yours to offer. felix, make this quick. i’d like to go home.”
your wide eyes flickered to the tallest man of their group, at the wicked smirk that formed across his lips as he began to stalk towards you. bree gripped your hand, the two of you frozen in fear as felix approached.
“wait.”
a soft voice broke through your panicked thoughts and you looked past felix, locking eyes with the brunette boy who had been standing next to the blonde. your breath caught in your throat, struck by the handsome boy who was now approaching felix. “leave them be, felix.”
“alec?” the blonde called out, only for him to ignore her as he stopped in front of you. if you were still human, your heart would have been racing, but all you could do now was stare in shock as the boy reached out to grab your free hand.
“i’ve finally found you.” he murmured, tone quiet, almost like he wanted to savor this moment between just the two of you. “i’m alec. what’s your name?”
you told him quietly, not able to break eye contact, even as you heard the confused mutterings from the others around you. amongst their conversations, you heard the word “soulmate” and everything seemed to make sense.
he smiled, eyes lighting up. “we’ll go back to italy. your friend may come if that would make you happy.”
it was your turn to smile and you nodded at him, squeezing the hand that bree was still holding as you turned to look at her. she looked relieved now, and the two of you couldn’t help but release the tension in your shoulders now.
because, finally, after the whirlwind that these past few days had provided, it seemed like things were finally looking up.
