📌 Finally getting around to making a pinned post lol

Hi, I'm a massive Doctor Who fan and I like coding & using Discord far too much 😅. I also like watching anime and playing (chaotic?) games with my friends.

I am a part of the chat moderation team for the Twitch Chat & Discord Server for streamer Dr1fterX; and a Bug Hunter for Discord in their Discord Testers program. I also do my own casual streams on my Twitch channel, found here!

In the world of coding/programming, I have made a number of Discord Server Apps (previously called Bots before Discord rebranded them to get away from the negative connotation the term "bot" now has) - most of which were private or for Dr1fterX.

My programming journey has only just begun though, as I am now trying my hardest to expand my programming skillset outside of Discord Apps/Bots, and onto other stuff too. 👀

Update on plans for the future of Doctor Who

Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC

Today we’re announcing an update on plans for the future of Doctor Who. As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year. Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come. After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode. This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory. The previously announced new Doctor Who animation series for CBeebies is currently in production. Details of the tender will be announced in due course.

The BBC retains all IP in Doctor Who. BBC Studios will continue to lead the global distribution of Doctor Who as well as licensing, consumer products, digital and immersive experiences on behalf of the BBC.

And so GOODBYE from me to Doctor Who but HELLO to a big new future for the show, as the BBC announces it’s putting the show out to tender. As a result, there won’t be a Christmas Special - we only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there’s no need for it. You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you’ll be waiting for MORE Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it! For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor. You may disagree; fine, sit in that chair and wait to be proved right. You’ll wait a lonnng time 🪑 Now I’m as excited as anyone to see what comes next! Will they keep the theme tune? Will they lose the blue box? Will they bring back the Drahvin?! I do love it (/s) when people are like "ohhh my Discord account/Server got hacked!" when actually no hack took place and it's almost always:

Someone having their account compromised due to a phishing scam, accidentally installing malware, or fell to social engineering

or, in the case of Discord Servers: someone giving people they don't trust elevated permissions, a server admin or mod going rogue, or a Bot that was added (by someone with "Manage Server" permission) went rogue or was malicious

(Side note: Never, EVER, give Bots the "Admin" permission. No Bot ever needs that "Admin" permission. And never give Bots permissions they don't actually need)

A *lot* of these instances could be avoid with educating people on what to look out for. Something that can't happen while governments are trying to force companies to baby-proof everything (which is not possible lol)

So much of online discourse is people writing posts about why XYZ Thing is bad and then the only source for their claims is just 'this would be awesome for my argument if it was true'.

Just gonna say this for those in the back.

Stop putting the blame on companies when PARENTS are the FIRST line of defense for YOUR children!

Sure, companies have their part to play in keeping their services safe, but ultimately that means nothing when the first line of defence, the parents, don't want to actually take parental responsibility for their own children. This includes them actually TALKING to and LISTENING to their children too.

Stop shifting all the blame to companies when parents are just as much to blame too! (and no amount of technological advances will replace parents).

It's funny how people still think Nitro is solely what is funding Discord.

It's not.

Discord is funded by Nitro yes, but also by:

Quests (big money right there),

Server Boost subscriptions (yes it's always been possible to buy Boost subscriptions without Nitro, and additional Boosts on top of Nitro)

Profile Cosmetics,

taking a cut from their new Game Shop integration,

taking a cut from Server monetisation feature

taking a cut from Bot/App monetisation features

and private (soon to be public maybe?) investors.

So even if Discord ran out of Nitro money, they'll be fine for a little bit anyways due to their other income sources (and their tiny layoffs round they apparently sneakily did a few weeks ago that went under the radar).

Just realised that it seems like people stopped trying to push back against VRChat who doubled-down on using Persona as their age verifier.

Persona, an age verification service with ties to the US's anti-human government.

That sucks.

Why did y'all stop pushing back? Keep making noise about it!

In contrast: Discord, a much bigger company, was very quick to drop and distance themselves away from Persona! Why can't VRChat do the same too?

Apparently if your a Star Fox fan you just want 64 again, at least according to Tyrranux, I also love how he completely ignores Star Fox Zero, like bro that game is considered the worst game in the whole franchise.
