“Apparently there’s some other Ashton Maxwell who happens to be a Siren, or their info was bullshit.” He replied, managing a feeble shrug, it was stupid how he actually got out of it but he wasn’t questioning it at this point, he was just glad Mya wouldn’t find him dead somewhere. “They’ll give me a pardon thing, make some announcement. I’m a Government Guard after all, if someone try’s to kill me I can kill them or throw them in jail, doesn’t really bother me.” It did bother him, he wasn’t going to kill some civilian who sided with the government and thought he was an opponent but only he knew that.
Third time, Ashton thought but didn’t voice it as he looked at the girl and nodded. “The Government do worse.” He was speaking from experience after all, he’d been through way worse from the Government although their worst was nothing compared to his other three counts of torture from the wonderful Italian Mafia, who adored him so dearly. “They let me go, they know I’m not a Siren now. I’ll be fine. I have a house.”
Ashton kept his head low as he sat down on some sort of flat surface, his vision was a little blurry to tell what it was but it seemed stable enough. “Why are you helping me?” He asked, almost suspiciously as he stared at her sleepily, sometimes he couldn’t understand the kindness of some people and he didn’t trust anyone but himself and Mya. Although the concerned look seemed genuine an he couldn’t help but wonder how someone could show such thing for a stranger. He looked down at his ripped, bloody shirt and stared at it for a few passing moments, hesitating as he knew that underneath his blood soaked skin there was too many scars, small, large, thick and thin to count and the last thing he wanted was more questions because he didn’t know who to explain them to a stranger. “I can get it myself when I get home…I…a clean shirt will do.” He deflected as he lifted his head again. “Just so I don’t look like an infected walking through the streets.” He managed some sort of humour and smiled slightly.
Even though Maddie couldn’t help but wonder if he was the same Ashton Maxwell that was on the list, she didn’t query it because if so and he was in the state he was in right now because of governement, then that was something she was really against as well. “It doesn’t bother you?” The young brunette looked at him and again, she wasn’t sure that was strictly true. The only thing she knew was, the guy hadn’t come across as threatening--quite the opposite actually and considering the aggressive ones she’d met recently, it was a relief.
“I don’t know who does worse any more...” Maddie looked a little despondent for a moment or two. “The government are capable of doing this...and sirens were responsible for taking away my parents--I blame them because they were at fault...it’s that simple. I have no idea why people are fighting each other when there are deadlier threats out there...everyone should be on the same damn side.”
Maddie brought him a glass of water over and held her hand out for him to take it. She seemed really surprised he would ask why she was helping him. “...because you are hurt.” She looked at him with a furrowed brow. “Why wouldn’t I?...you’d do the same, right?” It was probably wrong of the brunette to assume everyone would do the same, when some in the past had clearly shown otherwise.
“Of course...” Maddie reached over his head and opened a compartment, pulling out three or four different shirts that had been washed. “Try these..one should fit..they are male ones...” She’d got them from a mens store when she had been out scavenging once and used them as oversized shirts to sleep in for herself. She smiled at his humour and nodded. “Well you do look a little worse for wear I gotta admit....no offense mind you.” She couldn’t help but still be concerned though. “I wish you would let me help with those injuries.”
