TW1ST: 180° is the second extended play by South Korean girl group, TWIST. The album was released on May 5, 2017, through JYL Records. Consisting of nine songs, including the three singles, “Come Back Home”, “Triangle”, and “Overdose”. Musically, the album spans between R&B, hip hop, EDM, metal, and dance-pop. The group earned the title ‘self-produce’ group as all members have taken the lead in the album production. “Come Back Home” was written and composed by Chaeyoung and Hyerim, whereas “Overdose” was composed by Sohye and written by Hyerim. “Triangle” is the first track that contains credits from all the members, in which the live arrangement consisting of an electric guitar and violins were composed by Sohye and Chaeyoung, while the lyrics were written by Mina and Hyerim.

As a sequel to their first eponymous extended play, TW1ST, 180° was a commercial success. The album debuted atop the Gaon Albums Chart, with over 400,000 copies sold in the first week, with Twist breaking their own record for having the highest girl group first week album sales, which was previously held by the predecessor album known as TW1ST. By the end of 2017, 180° had sold over 700,000 copies, making Twist hold the top two selling girl group albums of the year.

The lead single, “Come Back Home”, debuted atop the Gaon Digital Chart with other 567,888 digital units sold in the first week of release. The song remained atop the chart for four consecutive weeks. The second single, “Overdose”, debuted at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart with 309,362 digital units sold. In the first week of June 2017, “Overdose” rose to the summit of the chart with a huge increase in sales after the group held a one-time performance at the Apollo Theater in New York City, leading the performance to gain popularity. “Overdose” topped the Gaon Digital Chart for seven consecutive weeks. Due to the sudden traction from the viral performance, “Overdose” peaked at number 10 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100. The third single, “Triangle” peaked at number 80 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of September 3, 2017.

For the album’s release, a special “TWIST Comeback Show”, hosted by a collaboration of Mnet and MTV, was broadcast live worldwide on May 6, 2017. The show consisted of performances from the following albums: TW1ST and 180°.

It was difficult to follow up to the release of TW1ST, the general public counted them out, but Twist came back FIGHTING! 

Come Back Home topped all the real time charts, earning 50 perfect-all-kills.

Overdose was the REAL hit of the album! It became bigger than Come Back Home and earned 73 perfect-all-kills.

Overdose debuted in the Bubbling Under on Billboard at number 10! 

Sohye had a vengeance. After a winter of taking violin, guitar, and writing lessons, she composed Overdose as her first project. She then enlisted Hyerim to help her with the lyrical material of the song. 2HYE lives on!

Mina joined the cast of Hello Counselor, to give advice to individuals!

As a gift for such a successful first half of 2017, Twist went on vacation to Malaysia!

To get to know the members more, Chaeyoung began her own radio show; Chae’s Clubhouse, where the Twist members and other idols are interviewed every week.

Performance Highlights (Iconic Moments / Popular Performances):

On 050417, the official comeback stages for Come Back Home and Overdose took place at Mnet Countdown. The stage for Come Back Home was rather futuristic, inspired by The Matrix and TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’. Each member had a white monochrome and colorful latex outfit suited for them, as they would dance in unison. The Overdose set in comparison was rather dark, sleek, and simplistic with white greek statues surrounding the girls. The beginning of the performances shows 20 backup dancers in the form of a choir as they surround Twist. Chaeyoung and Hyerim are directing the orchestra before the song begins.

On 050717 at SBS Inkigayo, Twist descended onto the stage from the ceiling via a small shaft and broke the glass wall that is used as an entrance to their performance of Overdose. Notable moments include Sohye opening up the performance with an electric guitar solo which transitions into Hyerim’s opening verse, Chaeyoung and Hyerim’s duo rap at the bridge, and Mina’s high note before the bridge.

At The 2017 Mnet Asian Music Awards, Twist performed a symphony orchestra version of Overdose, which included 100 members and backup dancers on stage performing various string instruments of the melody. At the opening of the symphony orchestra segment, Mina has an operatic vocal solo stage and is followed by Sohye’s electric guitar solo segment. The girls are seen rising onto the stage in a ring of blue fire, which intensifies with every movement of the symphony behind them. Notable moments include a dance break before the bridge, Chaeyoung and Hyerim’s duo rap, Hyerim’s signature hand movement that commands the audience from each direction to sing or scream louder, and a solo Hyerim dance stage. The performance received critical acclaim and is listed as one of the most iconic MAMA stages.

At The 2017 Melon Music Awards, Twist performed a rock version of Triangle with an orchestra live band to enhance the live instrumental of the song. The girls are seen descending onto the stage as angels with fluffy white wings in a ring of pure white light (in contrast to the ring of blue fire they stood in at MAMA for Overdose). Notable moments include Sohye’s violin solo, Hyerim’s runway walk before her bridge (insp @ 3:01 here), Chaeyoung’s screamo rap, Hyerim’s high note at the end (4:30 here), and Mina leading a metal-insp dance break.

"i'm the female monster! twist, let's go!"

TW1ST is the eponymous first extended play by South Korean girl group TWIST. The album was released on January 1, 2017. Consisting of seven tracks which feature various genres such as Hip Hop, Trap, Pop, and R&B, the album is supported by the lead single, “Crazy”, produced by Pdogg and Supreme Boi while the lyrics were written by Chaeyoung and Hyerim. Prior to the release of the lead single, "Crazy" made its' debut performance at MBC Gayo Daejun's 2016 Music Festival as a surprise for a stellar debut era of TWIST.

The EP was a commercial success, topping the Gaon Album Chart for the week of January 8, 2017 with 300,000 albums sold in the first week and remained atop the chart for six consecutive weeks. Prior to the release, TW1ST received a record-breaking pre-order of over 400,000 physical copies, the highest for a girl group in the first half of 2017. The album also became the group’s first entry on the Billboard 200 at no. 30, the highest charting position for a Korean girl group at the time. By the end of 2017, TW1ST had sold over 800,000 copies. The album topped the Gaon Monthly Chart for January, as it was the album that sold the most copies that month.

The album has two singles; Crazy and Whistle. 

With the surprise release of “Crazy”, Crazy was a commercial success in South Korea and debuted atop the Gaon Digital Chart for the week of January 1. It also peaked at number one on the equivalent Download Chart, selling over 532,191 digital copies in its release week. “Crazy” remained atop the charts for ten weeks, becoming the longest-running number one song in the chart’s history. 

“Whistle” was released as a single on February 1, 2017. Although blocked by its predecessor, “Whistle” also experienced success in South Korea. The song debuted and peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart for the week of January 8, 2017. It sold over 200,000 digital units and earned 5 million streams in the album’s release week.

This was an extremely ambitious project that TWIST and JYL Records collaborated in regarding budget. The girls take WORLDWIDE to a whole different level as they showcase various performances in different cities, showing the endless possibilities of TWIST.

You thought you had enough of Twist? TOO BAD! They opened the year up with the plan of DOMINATING 2017!

The lead single, Crazy, was praised for its production and hip hop sound. The girls also sounded amazing! 

When I say the girls were ALL OVER South Korea with this album?!

Crazy was choreographed by Sohye and Son Sungdeuk from Big Hit!

Composer!Sohye made her debut! She has a credit for “Love Song”, where she wrote and played the violin!

“Boy” is a track written by Hyerim, and she explains that she was influenced by Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” in terms of harmonies and a Darkchild-inspired sound.

The album earned 400,000 preorders and sold over 800,000 copies by the end of 2017, becoming the best-selling girl group album of the year.

The girls first performed “Crazy” at the 2016 MBC GAYO DAEJUN MUSIC FESTIVAL as a surprise performance! Netizens roared! 

This was Hyerim’s era! She said the rent was due and she was gonna be a beast on stage!

Mina made her debut as a host on Mnet Countdown! 

Crazy earned 15 wins and a grand slam across all music shows!

The girls had their first solo concert “Let’s Get Twisted!” in Seoul, South Korea, which was an album showcase for the release. The girls had a sold out concert of 15,000 fans. 

Whistle was a certified hit in South Korea!

Performance Highlights (Popular Performances / Iconic Moments):

For the debut surprise performance (123116) of ‘Crazy’, Hyerim is shown dropping from MBC Gayo’s ceiling and onto the main stage as an entrance. She was previously stated by JYL Records to not be attending the festival due to an undisclosed injury, nor was she on the red carpet. (Which was suggested by Hyerim to create high expectations for the performances that night)

For the official comeback stage of ‘Crazy’ (01117), the performance takes place at night, in which the girls are dropped off via helicopter on a helipad rooftop and surrounded by 30 backup dancers. Hyerim kicks the camera in her opening verse and leads a dance break, Mina makes her debut as a sub-rapper in Twist, Chaeyoung gets the bridge where the backup dancers and the rest of the group drop around her. At the end of the performance, the girls are seen exiting the rooftop via helicopter, in which Sohye makes a run and hangs off the rope ladder as the helicopter flies off. The performance sets an all-time high viewership record in Korean television history with 10 million viewers.  

On 010817, the stage for ‘Crazy’ took place at the Summit One Vanderbilt Skyscraper in New York City. The girls are seen performing intensely atop glass floors above the bright city. The reasoning behind the international performance connects to Chaeyoung’s verse in ‘Crazy’; “You can’t step to me, I go crazy wherever I go New York, Paris, Milano, Tokyo, London”. The performance goes viral, earning a television viewership of 8.7 million viewers. 

On 011217, the stage for ‘Crazy’ took place in Milan, where the girls performed an opera version of the song at the Teatro alla Scalla, an 18th century theatre for Italian opera and ballet. Twist’s ability to switch up the rendition of ‘Crazy’ garnered praise for the girl’s creativity. The performance received a total of 7 million viewers in television history.

On 012117, The performance took place at the Musée d’Orsay museum with 50 backup dancers. In the second half of the performance, the setting cuts to the Eiffel Tower, where the girls perform in front of. 50 backup dancers surround the Eiffel Tower in circular unison as they dance in sync. 

For the final stage of ‘Crazy’, the girls were seen performing in the streets of Tokyo and London, leading a flash mob with fans.

Despite only debuting a mere half a year ago, Japanese singer and actress Kaori Takahashi—mononymously known as KAORI—is already paving her own way in the industry. Her debut album, aptly self-titled, sold over 400,000 copies in Japan alone. Although not the highest selling album in the country, nearly half a million copies for a rookie artist is a testament to Takahashi’s appeal. An even more impressive feat is her appearance on the Billboard 200, as her album debuted within the Top 20, at a surprising No. 18.

Takahashi’s debut single—“Treat Me (Akachan o Atsukatte)”—was an instant hit, something that surprised even her. It wasn’t a No. 1 in her home country (it actually debuted at No. 2), but it still sold nearly 100,000 units and was downloaded nearly 60,000 times within its first week of release. What’s surprising, however, is that the single found itself on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at No. 86. Not everyone—especially an Asian artist and especially a rookie—finds themselves on the Billboard charts, the last to do so was Psy for his viral hit “Gangnam Style” just nine months ago.

Just a few weeks ago, Takahashi’s first headlining tour began in Tokyo. And once again proving how popular she is already, she sold out the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, which holds a staggering 10,000 people. Reportedly, Takahashi managed to do so in a little over two hours. And it could’ve been much faster than that if it weren’t for the traffic caused by countless fans. Apparently, she also sold out Jamsil Arena in three hours, which is practically unheard of for a six month old rookie artist from Japan.

Dubbed “Baby Amuro” in her home country (with the style and 90s/2000s-esque stage costumes to boot), Takahashi is definitely proving to be a potential icon within the Japanese music industry. Her performance at her opening show went viral on Japanese social media and even caught attention in the West, with users comparing her to the likes of Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, and even the “Princess of Pop” herself, Britney Spears. With these comparisons and her ever growing fanbase, Takahashi is clearly set to become the world’s next J-pop icon.

🌈, 🔥, and 👁 for the ask game !

👁️ EYE - what colour are their eyes? do people notice their eyes? is there anything special about them (shows emotion easily, literally magical...)?

“If we’re talking in a magical sense… I am most definitely a psychic. The girls always make fun of me when I say this!” Hyerim tries to stifle a laugh as she looks towards the members who all sigh dramatically as she begins to ramble about astrology and her spiritual powers. Sohye immediately intervenes before the girls are here for hours being told about their birth chart. 

“Please do not get Hyerim started about powers. She will claim that she had dejavu at the smallest situations ever…” Sohye laughs, playfully shoving Hyerim in the chair. 

“It’s true! I had dejavu when we were at Inkigayo and we got our first win! I was told I was delusional!” A loud Hyerim emerges in the room, standing up from the chair. She begins to point at the members, specifically Sohye and Chaeyoung. It was one of Hyerim’s many perks, to get loud and defensive. Chaeyoung audibly gasps as she wasn’t expecting to be brought into this little debacle. “That’s because who expects a 1 day old rookie group to their first win in 10 days?! Be realistic!” Matching Hyerim’s volume, the youngest two begin to get into a debate.

Mina suddenly speaks up, a bit overwhelmed by the sudden chaos in the room, she tries to everyone to a reasonable volume. “Well, to answer the first question… We all have brown eyes!” Stating the obvious, she hears laughter from the three other members.

“Why thank you, Catherine Obvious!” Sohye blurts out, despite having the incorrect saying. Providing even more laughter from Chaeyoung and Hyerim, the group’s lovely maknaes.

“Don’t you mean Captain Obvious?” Hyerim, now in tears of laughter, says as she holds onto Chaeyoung for more laughter. “Where in the world did you get Catherine from?!” Chaeyoung yells, her face is way beyond baffled. This was a new low for Sohye, who is now sitting flustered in her seat. Her cheeks are red and she covers her face in peak embarrassment.

“Shut up! I said what I said!” Sohye yells in defense, she folds her arms and turns her cheek to the girls. “Yeah, and you definitely said it wrong.” Mina makes a remark as she looks at the live comments.

“Well, as you can see, Sohye gets red in the face when she is embarrassed!”

🔥 FIRE - do they have any self destructive tendencies? what habits do they have that hinder them from becoming their best self?

“Self destruction is this one’s middle name.” Sohye points to Hyerim, completely throwing the maknae under the bus. So much for loyalty, huh? Hyerim rolls her eyes and completely shrugs off Sohye’s remarks. 

“Let’s not talk about self destruction when you’ve destroyed every relationship with a man that you’ve come across!” A passive aggressive Hyerim smiles as she pours herself some tea. A loud silence falls amongst the girls. This was pretty common between Sohye and Hyerim. There was a slight competition between the two behind the scenes. Quite frankly, it was an annoying thing to deal with if you have lived with them for multiple years.

“I may be self-destructive in my relationships, but aren’t you the one who destroys actual prior existing ones? If I recall, weren’t you just crying about being called a homewrecker?” Sohye questions. Leaving Mina and Chaeyoung in complete shock and having to clean up the mess that takes place after.

The comments are going insane, in the meantime. “I can’t help but be attractive to those who come across me. I’ve done nothing but exist and men with audacity feel the need to offer me things! Sohye, that’s what happens when you have a pleasant personality!” Hyerim chimes, her voice lowers as she leaves her tea on the counter.

“Please do not be alarmed, guys! This is just them joking with each other.. As you can see it gets really intense here, aha!” Mina, now feeling secondhand embarrassment and wanting to shut the livestream off. She can only imagine the rumors and possible controversy that can come out of this.

“Umm, I personally tend to overthink my work and critique myself way too much! I’ve deleted a lot of unreleased music because of this.” Chaeyoung switches the topic as she looks at the comments with Mina. Noticing the worried look upon her leader’s face, Chaeyoung squeezes her hand unbeknownst to the average viewer’s knowledge.

🌈 RAINBOW - what advice would they give to their younger self?

“What advice would you give your younger self, guys?” Mina cheers up as she looks at this particular question in the comments. She looks to her members for approval before she answers.

“You know? I would honestly start a bakery or get into cooking at a younger age. Baking is just very peaceful to me.” Chaeyoung smiles, her eyes twinkling as she begins to think about what could have been a nice alternate future for her. “You love baking. I’ve had some of Chae’s cookies, they’re really good!” Hyerim agrees with Chaeyoung as she recalls a memory.

“Oh, yes! Chaeyoung actually made a cake for my older brother’s wedding. Everyone loved it!” Mina exclaims, nodding her head in excitement.

“I would take up modeling. I can easily do that now, but I’ve always wanted to be in the children's beauty pageants, my parents on the other hand…” Sohye sighs. She shudders at the mere thought of that small part of her childhood where she actually lived with her parents.

“For me, I would grow a backbone early on and actually defend myself. I’m too timid as of now.” Mina gets candid for a bit. She believed she found herself to be a pushover and a bit weak at times. She often questions her leader role, as well. Especially when it becomes hard to tell if her members are fighting or playing, she finds herself wondering… Can she really do this?

“I would tell myself that I can do anything I want! Technically speaking, I’m already doing that. But I mean in the sense that I can major in Psychology as I’m also an idol. You know, multitasking! I have a deep love for psychology!” Hyerim stirs her tea and takes another sip. She found herself wanting to ramble about the human mind and the influences of society.

Noticing the comments still mentioning the questionable tension between Sohye and Hyerim, Mina finds that it is time to end the livestream. Mina puts on a forced smile, “Well, that’ll be all for today, guys! We actually have to go to rehearsal soon! Oops, did I mention rehearsal?” Mina giggles, she internally pats herself on the back for shifting the focus onto something that really matters.

The girls say their respective farewells to the livestream and it soon ends. Leaving the girls to look at each other in silence. Mina slowly becomes furious, but she would never let it show.

“You two need to get it together. I know you both read the comments. There’s no reason that little stunt should have taken the focus of the whole livestream. You are aware that people are going to think there’s tension, right?” Mina sighs once again, her voice starts to fluctuate between several volumes. This might have been the angriest the members have seen their leader.

“Unnie, it’s okay. You did a great job on distracting the comments! They actually think there’s music coming and me being me, I can fix that.” Chaeyoung places her hands on Mina’s shoulders, trying to ease her leader’s stress. 

“Sohye started first! She shouldn’t have said that I’m self destructive. I simply pointed out facts.” Hyerim retorted. “It’s actually hilarious that I can get under your skin like that,” Sohye smiles as she leaves the three, going into her room. She knew she would be hearing Mina’s mouth for the rest of the day. 

Mina’s eyes widened, she couldn’t believe Sohye had the audacity to leave the room in the middle of a group meeting. Immediately rising from her chair, Mina follows Sohye into her room.

“How dare you! You have the nerve to leave when I’m in the middle of letting you guys know that the idiocy taking place is ridiculous?!” Mina yells, this was her first time even calling the members out their name. Sohye’s heart might have dropped just a teensy bit. She’s lived with Mina for four years, and hearing the insult being hurled from the leader was shocking.

“You’re not excluded from the lecture, Sohye! It’s not solely Hyerim’s fault, this is yours too! Do you know how serious bully accusations are?!” Mina’s voice gets louder, she knew the general public weren’t fond of bullies. Hell, they’ll petition for both Sohye and Hyerim to leave, leaving the rest of Twist to fend for themselves. Mina valued her career, and she knew Chaeyoung did too.

Sohye, still silent, begins to paint her toenails as she dismisses Mina’s need to yell. “Mina, please. It was a joke. Don’t you think you’re overthinking, a bit?” Shrugging Mina’s worries off, Sohye finally looks to her leader. Deep down, Sohye was not joking. It was a bit fun doing whatever she was doing to Hyerim. It’s not exactly a competition, but the banter is indeed fun. 

As the older two of the group are arguing amongst themselves, Chaeyoung doing damage control, has uploaded a song to the group’s soundcloud. Hyerim, sitting next to her, witnesses the moment right before her eyes. “I cannot believe you just did that, thank you.” Hyerim says as she looks towards Chaeyoung.

Slowly regretting her prior remarks to Sohye earlier, Hyerim did not like seeing Mina in such an angered state. Chaeyoung on the other hand, did not take any offense to Sohye and Hyerim’s continuous banter. Did it become too much at times? Yes. But she also understood why her leader was under panic.

After a few minutes of yelling from Mina, she heads back to the living room and sits in silence. She finally notices the soundcloud notification on her phone; ‘Twist have uploaded a new track. Listen here.’ Slightly easing her previous anxiety, Mina sighs in relief. She knew there wasn’t much that could be done about Sohye and Hyerim in the current moment, but as long as fans were focused on something else for the time being, she was fine.
