Hey there! I saw posts of your IWB from IB! I'm new and am still getting my bearings on how dp visual arts works. Anyway, I want to know, how was the basic structure of your art projects in you journal? Like how did you start off your project in your journal? What should an analysis include? What projects did you do? The syllabus has changed slightly already and it isn't called an IWB but a visual arts journal now but I'm guessing it's relatively similar. It'd be great help if you could help! C:

Hello there! Someone asked me something similar, so here’s a link to that post to read what I said there.

For the sketchbook: I’d start of with a very general/vague idea with what I wanted to do. I’d write my current ideas down, then I’d do some research.

For example:

1) Idea: Drawing a couple having tea. Drinking tea is something personal to me.

2) Research: What does tea represent? How do other cultures drink tea? This led me to finding articles about food and intimacy, and how the kind of food you eat is very representative of how intimate you are with that person.

3) Art history research: Has another artist done the same thing or has dealt with similar ideas? Is there a certain style you’d like to incorporate? Are you using a medium that’s unfamiliar to you? Find someone who rocks at that medium and try working with it in your IWB before you work on the finished product. Make sure to print out pictures of references you use, and artist’s works you may like!

4) Thumbnails, Thumbnails, Thumbnails: sketch like crazy! Keep drawing / exploring your medium until you’ve come up with a unique composition. The more you push yourself and the idea the farther the artwork will go.

Art Analysis: Depending on whether or not it’s your work or someone else’s work the analysis of artwork will vary somewhat. (If you want to know how to analyze someone else’s artwork, shoot me another ask.)

First: Mention the title, dates started (if available) and completed, the medium(s) you used, the surface it’s on (ex: paper, canvas, etc), the dimensions in both inches and cm. Do a general description of it (ex: A girl sitting in front of an implied figure having tea in a public place. The girl takes up most of the composition, and the overall feel of it is very warm, due to the color choices.)

Next, write about the idea behind it, how does it relate personally and on a larger scale? Does it connect to things happening in the world around you? This is when you can bring in some of the research you did whether it be cultural/art history.

Discuss your strengths and weaknesses. “I don’t like it,” isn’t good enough. Discuss what works for you and doesn’t. What was the most difficult/fun/challenging/rewarding thing about making this piece? What have you gained from creating this/the research in creating it? What would you change if you had to re-do it? What are some of your ideas going forward? Did making this piece inspire you to come up with other things?

What projects did I do? Well if you check my IB Art tag you can possibly find some of my works there. My focus was “intimacy” and relationships. :)

IB Visual Arts Option A - Candidate Statement

   For some, photography is a record of reality that comes close to depicting truth. Although I recognized this documentary value of photography, I aimed to explore photography’s potential for capturing uncertainty. With this intention, my work has moved from explorations of the human form to narratives that blur the borders of fantasy and reality.

   In the beginning, I believed I held some degree of mastery in photographing portraits. However, I found that my work was largely superficial, favoring aesthetics over sustenance. By deconstructing my more successful works, I found two common qualities: first, they were self-portraits, and second, they balanced aesthetics with meaning. Hoping to continue this balance, I sought to explore disjunctions between identity and the individual while developing ideas for visually engaging portraits. Through my conceptual investigations, I gravitated towards artists like Tim Walker and Salvador Dalí. For me, Walker is an artist whose fashion photography does not sacrifice meaning or fine art principles despite its consumerist purpose. He weaves fashion into his fairytale worlds, blending fantasy with evocative reality. Although Dalí is a painter, I borrow his use of continual metaphors to relate fantastic motifs with real emotions and contemporary issues. In the same way, I focus on crafting fantastic narratives rooted in reality through my personal motifs of water and night.

   My work consists of only digital photographs, although I also explored cyanotypes. Experiments with other media, such as chalk pastel or pencil, eventually aided my post-processing in Adobe Photoshop. I often struggled with realizing my convoluted concepts. Through Connie Imboden’s mantra of viewing light as a subject, I simplified my photographs to their essential elements.

   Nearing the end of the IB program, I believe I emerge as a storyteller of unorthodox yet familiar worlds. Through the language of visual arts, I can invite viewers into these new realities.

I am so excited right now! I not only received my IB Diploma, I received a 7 in IB Visual Arts. Everything seems to have paid off and honestly, I feel a tad more academically validated with my photography. Above is a selection from both my studio work and my investigation workbook.
