Mikaiah and Anaiah Lei. Two young brothers straight outta South Central Los Angeles, they ain't going to gun you down, they'll probably just melt your face with some interesting music.
Skateboarding. Groovy music. Enjoying life.
O2 Academy Liverpool - 8th July -
I met up with these two interesting characters outside of the venue 5 hours before they were due on stage to support the Dropkick Murphys. After spending Sunday in a field at Sonisphere Festival with the band, Anaiah was desperate for a skate. Two days later they were in Liverpool. Ideal place to go push our planks around for a few hours while trying not to get bonneted going through traffic.
We had to stay close by to the O2 academy so we skated some hill further up from the academy (not London road, don't go there).
When you are a drummer that has to play a show in a few hours time and you are skating before hand you are going to try your best not to eat shit...
Easier said than done…
Anaiah got his first experience of rubbing his face across Liverpool's rough as fuck grounds.
Where better to go on a late sunny afternoon than the Pier Head. After some local scallies on bikes approached our American friend demanding to have a go of his board we finally got to skate.
Never seen anyone skate as good and as spontaneous as this lad. Fastplants and 360 whizzers were all on show that afternoon at the pier.
Didn't have long left so we decided to go and perform our moves at the weird wall ride spot at the Albert Dock. After some gravity defying tricks it was time to go back up to the O2 for the gig.
Both dressed all in white, The Bots step on stage while the crowd are chanting “Let’s go Murphys".
“You can cheer for the Dropkick Murphys after our set”. Those were the first words from Mikaiah as he adjusted his microphone stand.
Standing at the side of the stage watching The Bots playing was very enjoyable. Their music makes you want to get on down. Rhythms and riffs to please your ears. No rockstar bullshit, they just get straight to the point. Playing their music to a crowd of people who were mostly observing waiting for the Dropkick Murphys to arrive on stage. This doesn’t phase The Bots.
Half way through the set, Mikaiah noticed a guy on his own at the front with an OG “The Bots” shirt from way back. Props to that guy whoever he was! Mikaiah’s body twists and turns like the fucking exorcist while he’s playing guitar, I was standing there waiting for his head to turn a full 360 degrees.
Storming through their last two songs and then dragging out the ending to their final song ‘5:17’ as though it was the last piece of music they would ever play. Looping the main riff on a loop machine then storming into some insane screeching Jack White style solo, Mikaiah defiantly can play guitar and Anaiah can defiantly play drums. The Bots are becoming masters of their trade and will only continue to grow. Pretty positive future for these two young G’s.
Go and like their Facebook page so you don’t miss out on the new album PINK PALMS coming out later this year.
