ARI BASSILI is 29 and is portrayed by RAMI MALEK.
Occupation: NEXT model management secretary; Con artist
Ari Bassili hadn’t known much of their own biological family. In fact, only a picture remains in their possession of the woman they’ve been told gave them life. The photograph, now a thin wisp of yellowed parchment, was once a front page story of a Saudi newspaper, depicting a woman with tears in her eyes and joy splattered across her face. The crown perched perfectly atop her calculated mess of dark hair and bouquet of flowers swaddled in her arms made the story obvious; she was a beauty queen, and, as the caption said, her name was Mina Bassili. Though, her life taken after that picture hadn’t held up to the glamor one might assume.
Their mother was out of their life before they reached the age of two, because as the turmoil in neighboring countries poisoned their own homeland, they were forced to the UK as refugees, thus igniting the fated path of this mother and child duo. The tragedies facing her country handed Mina addictions in handfuls. It wasn’t long until she was unfit to care for her child, and they were forcibly separated by the law. None of which they recall, but even a child’s earliest years can act as a foundation of what has yet to develop, like the first days of snowfall eventually leading to an avalanche.
The child was passed from foster home to foster home through most of their young life, and with each new home they were introduced to a varying severity of abuse. Ari soon became a modern day Cinderella of sorts, coping with the new situations and the erratic tendencies accompanying them by transforming their little body into whatever machine a vintage housewife could dream of. From occasional messes to daily chores, the young child accomplished it all with little error. They were an impressionable and highly intuitive kid, repetitively scrubbed bare of all self worth gathered in the dark crevices of his little child mind. That is, until they reached their teens.
The bad kids from the neighborhood turned into juvenile delinquents as years pressed on, and even though they were labelled as a struggling member of that very group, Ari was still no exception to this evolution. Always under someone’s lead, they used the same process from cleaning and cooking to thieving and teenaged vandalism. Though their last foster home held a different kind of promise than the rest, as the man and woman of the household bore a son just a year and some before their own birth into this world, and within the first week of cohabitation Ari had imprinted on him.
The older boy was rough and showed a crude arrogance that Ari hadn’t known existed up until that point. He gave the younger teen a sense of protection as he had taken them under his wing, and that appealed wholly to the self-preservation laced throughout the entirety of Ari’s eccentric behavior. Ari loved him and the young man took this affection in and dealt it back in his own unique ways. The young man introduced darker paths Ari hadn’t previously thought of; Ari’s first sip of alcohol was with him, Ari’s first line of coke was with him, Ari’s first time was with him, Ari’s first love was him, and, in an predictable twist of fate, Ari’s first John was introduced by him.
Though this feeling of love and altruistic care, of protection and guidance in the real world had a rather short grace period before the whole thing crumbled right before Ari’s wide Bambi eyes. Only months in to their son’s new business it was found out by his parents. Their child was immediately shipped away, off to train for the military, where as Ari was simply kicked out, though refusing to rejoin the foster system, they instead joined the eclectic ragtag bunch of felons littering the streets. It was in those same exact streets where Ari worked for the next six or so years of their life. Pickpocketing turned to identity theft, scamming, and fraud, while those weird favors done for their ex-boyfriend had turned into a working relationship between a prostitute and their pimp.
While they worked the same street as several others of similar age and biological sex, their toned body and exotic looks proved to work in their favor. Within a year Ari had become one of his pimp’s most celebrated employees. They remained lost through out these years, hoping someday that they would snag the role of Julia Roberts in their own little version of Pretty Woman. Alas that never occurred as drugs flowed through their system, reality melted away, and their owner was given their beating heart and all the emotions that came along with it.
Though all of that changed just years ago when they were recruited into the secret society of criminals known as the Organization. They were discovered when they almost got away with a perfect scam, involving one of well established members of this underground kingdom. Over the course of a week their whole entire life shifted. Their second love and pimp had been forced away, threatened with the awesome power the Organization held, and Ari was moved into an apartment, given a job at NEXT Model Management as a secretary, accessorized to their own contentment, and told what exactly what this cover job entailed. And from then on they owed this group something, and they wouldn’t let Ari go until all their hard work was paid and then some.
