Hi philes, it’s been a long time! Far too long if you ask us.  Would you believe that 7 years ago today we posted our first recommendation? In celebration of our 7 year anniversary, we reached out to a few old friends and asked them to write a little something anniversary-themed for what we are calling, The Anniversary Collection. And hooboy did they come through! The collection will be updated throughout the day as more stories are added.

Casefile Monday

To say just about anything about tonight’s rec would probably be to say too much. At just shy of 800 words, it’s about as quick a casefile as you can get away with reading in just a minute or two. It stays with you, though, this story, as you find yourself seeing through the eyes of the killer.

It’s from a writer we’re not super familiar with, but if tonight’s rec is any indication, you’ll probably be reading more of this author if we can help it.

Smut Sunday

Okay, okay, we’re willing to admit it. Milagro has its pluses and minuses. In the Plus Category, we have some of the sexiest versions of Mulder and Scully to date, canonwise. Seriously, those two are really, really ridiculously good-looking. In the Minus Category, we have a creepy stalker dude basically fetishizing our girl Scully, and going to really gross and disgusting lengths to “observe” her.

But we also get that line. That one brilliant, perfect line: “Agent Scully is already in love.” (Insert Kill Bill sirens here, and also, DUH, THE AUDIENCE HAS KNOWN THIS FOR LIKE FIVE SEASONS.)

So maybe that one line, that one realization, could have been all it took for that last, final bridge to be crossed. And maybe it could have looked something like tonight’s rec.

Title:  I Believe

Casefile Monday

Tonight’s rec is dark and unsettling, but not uncomfortably so. Right off the bat, it’s an AU that takes a sharp left turn where Gethsemane left off. (And full disclosure, we also have some Scully/Skinner action when Scully still thinks Mulder has killed himself.)

But the ship quickly rights itself and gets back on track, insofar as this fic can get back on track. It’s incredibly dark, but maintains its grip on the story to stay true to both the characters and the mythology, an amazing feat. Where the story takes Scully, in particular, given that she is still dying of cancer, is believable and deeply disturbing. Of the many violations she actually faced canonically on the show, the things she grapples with in this fic are heavy.

And since this is written by none other than RivkaT, you know it’s going to be a couple of things: Insanely good, and probably painful. Just the way we like it.

Smut Sunday

Wellllll, it’s not hard to imagine, is it? What a frantic phone call from Dr. Parenti’s office bathroom might have sounded like around about, oh, say, Season 7-ish, pre-relationship era? That’s mostly when we imagine that Per Manum must have taken place, right?

And the awkward, fumbling, sticky pages of a few too many well-used magazines that might have put Mulder off for the first time in his life when he needed to be on in every possible way. Jiminy Christmas, what a treat a scene like that might have been for us, huh? A phone call where Mulder might have been struggling a bit, when literally everything was on the line?

This is one of those early attempts for a fic writer to do that scene justice, and it is...well, it’s pretty much everything we could have wanted.

Novel-Length Friday

It’s been a hot minute since we were so excited to bring you guys a fic that had us bolted to the edges of our seats because it was so stinkin’ good. But that’s where we’re at with tonight’s rec.

It reads like a cross between the movie Family Man with Nicholas Cage and the episode Dreamland. Basically, the premise is, our version of S6 Scully, on the verge of getting the X-Files back with Mulder, suddenly and mysteriously finds herself having switched places with a version of Scully that is...well, not where she is. When she wakes up, she’s pregnant with a child and in bed with a version of Fox Mulder she can’t remember ever having married, but there’s a ring on her finger and a baby in her belly that tells her otherwise.

It’s a fantastic fic and grabs you from the very first word. And it’s one of those fics that deserves a read, because it’s such a unique story and told so well that we think you’ll probably lose sleep over it.

Post-Ep/Missing Scene Thursday

Who knows what our two crazy kids got up to with a Bureau credit card and all of glitzy, glamorous Los Angeles at their disposal after Hollywood A.D.?

It’s one of those questions that, like all things, there just aren’t enough fics out there that attempt to answer it. There never will be. But this is one of those interpretations that we consider to be top shelf. Top notch. Worth a read, if only because, you know, established MSR is our jam and we think we know damn good established MSR when we find it.

And this is it. Sexy. Sweet. Satisfying.

Editor’s Pick Wednesday

There seems to be an awful lot of cancer arc fic going around lately, and for good reason. That’s a gut punch and a half, for sure. But even angstier (angstier?? is that a word?), a majority of the time, is pregnancy arc fic. The first pregnancy, naturally, where Scully found herself without her child’s father and her partner and her best friend and her lover all in one fell swoop.

So. That being the theme of tonight’s rec, you think you know what’s going on here, until you don’t. And you’re left wondering if the gut punch you thought you were signing up for is the gut punch you might have welcomed after all.

Casefile Monday

A casefile about hunting season comes just in time for...well, hunting season! This one takes place in the wilderness of Maine, and it almost seems like it might be that nice little trip to the forest Mulder keeps promising Scully.

Except it never is, is it? And in this case, it’s a couple of dead hunters and a several hundred years-old curse that brings them into moose country. It’s one of those really great fics where the tone of MSR is just perfect for where they’re at (sometime during S7, presumably), just pre-established relationship but right on the verge.

So there’s flirting. There’s murder. There’s autopsies. And there’s moose.

What could possibly go wrong?

Flashback Friday

**Bonetree rarely gets enough love around here, so we’re bringing back an old fave from an old fave.**

We love a great little AU stand-alone story that seems to say and do so much in less than 10K words; it takes some serious talent to create a vibe and weave a cohesive story in so little time from some of the nearly unsalvagable strands of the frayed mytharc that were either forgotten or just fell by the wayside altogether.  

One of those threads we always wanted to see more of were the Kurt Crawford clones.  We always harbored a secret hope that there was more to their genetic history than met the eye, especially when one of the Kurts said, tellingly, “They’re our mothers.”  

Today’s author is one of the greats in the fandom.  So when we stumbled across this hidden gem of a fic that found our duo crossing the country on nothing more than a whim and whisper and dealing with the aftermath of having fallen into bed together not just once, but twice, we jumped in head first and weren’t disappointed.  We don’t think you will be either.
