Round 3 - Arachnida - Oribatida

Order: Oribatida

Common Name: Oribatid mites, “moss mites”, “beetle mites”

Suborders: 6 - Brachypylina, Enarthronota, Desmonomata, Mixonomata, Palaeosomata, Poronota

(there are 200 families so…)

Anatomy: mineralized exoskeleton as adults; some have a pair of pteromorphae, wing-like flaps that overhang the legs on either side that can be shut like a clam shell for defense, others simply tuck their legs under their protective armor

Diet: living and dead plant and fungal material, lichens, carrion; some are predatory on smaller arthropods

Habitat: moist forest floors worldwide; some specialized species live on bare, lichen covered rocks; some live on submersed aquatic plants

Evolved in: Middle Devonian

Oribatid mites are one of the few orders of mites without any parasitic species, and are by far the most prevalent of all arthropods in forest soils. There can be anywhere from 50,000 to 500,000 oribatid mites per square meter of leaf litter on the forest floor. They are essential for soil health, as they break down organic detritus and distribute fungi.

Some Oribatid mites produce alkaloids, presumably as a defence against predators. However, poison dart frogs that prey on oribatids can sequester these alkaloids to use for their own poison.

There are currently 12,000 species of Oribatid mite that have been identified, but researchers estimate that there may be anywhere from 60,000 to 120,000 total species out there.
