Hanal’Harel

Many years after Fen’Harel was locked behind the Veil, the elves of Thedas came together to build a new nation. The Dales, under Duchess Briala’s rule, flourished—both city elves and the Dalish that chose to join them lived free from shemlen oppression.

It is said on the nights the Veil is at its thinnest, a golden halla with a glowing leg can be seen standing at the outskirts of their growing cities. Only those with the sharpest eyes would spot the living shadow flanking it: a large wolf, dark as night, with six luminous eyes.

Hanal’Ghilan, those who once called themselves Dalish would whisper. The Pathfinder.

(It is only when a visiting Veil Jumper known as Rook laughs that the tavern goers pause in their tales.

“Of course they found a way out,” he whispered to himself, exasperated. “If it couldn’t hold him when he was alone, what more with both of them there?”

History repeating itself.

Solas and Felassan were obviously close, in a way that I personally see as hard to define between friendship and romance. Whatever you want to call it, their love for each other was obviously very strong.

We don't know for sure why Felassan kept his vallaslin. His most well-established trait is his value for freedom, so I figure there must be a motive within him somewhere to keep what in his day were slave markings. And so I thought, maybe he uses them as a symbol of rebellion in his own way.

Amaris, meanwhile, sees the vallaslin as having been reclaimed and given a new purpose in modern times: marking her as Dalish. Because her biggest fear is assimilation, it means a lot to her to carry that recognition of her culture. So in a way, she too uses it as a rebellious purpose.

I think part of the reason Solas breaks up with Amaris in this moment, is because he realizes that she has proven to him what Felassan tried to say before Solas killed him: the people of modern times are real. And that means he killed Felassan for nothing. We know how hard it is for Solas to admit he's wrong, and this probably crushes him in a way that's scary. Solas pushing Amaris away is both out of grief for Felassan, and fear of repeating his past mistake.
