One of the contractors at work is a dude who recently moved here from the Bay Area. He is used to Northern California, which is to say that he is NOT used to the general Tornado Alley attitude towards Thor dragging his dick across the plains and causing massive destruction on a semi-regular basis.

Namely, the fact that we get them at all, and the fact that the general Midwestern response is to wander outside to see if we can see it.

We have bad weather forcasted the next few days and I had to talk him through the site tornado plan and storm shelter locations (we have six on site, my office is actually inside one) to head off the poor guy's anxiety and also I had to admit that yes, I also share the general Tornado Alley brain damage and go outside to try and see it when the sirens go off.

Poor man thinks everyone in tornado Alley is out of their minds and as one of those people I can't even deny it. 'I seek shelter if it's heading this way' did not reassure him, he's convinced we are mad.

To answer the question in the notes, @what-about-second-tmblr ; when I visited Sacramento and LA some years ago, the sensation of a minor earthquake shifting the ground around just barely enough for a human to feel it had me freaked out and basically lying flat on my back outside going AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA while the Californians looked at me like I'd lost my mind.

So yes it is reciprocal.

i just saw a post on reddit titled "the writer is cooking but the food doesn't agree with me" and it was about OP clicking off a fic because they don't like the direction it's going in. slightly different context but can we all be more like this reddit OP. i think "the writer is cooking but the food doesn't agree with me" should be the new "don't like don't read." dead doves may give you diarrhea but don't make that everyone else's problem.

Solas' Companion Icon from Inquisition

Today I'm giving you two versions of the same design :)

I got very carried away with the first one and while I'm happy with how it looks, I admit the intricate design might not be everyone's cup of tea, so I made a simpler version as well. (See, I can rein myself in when needed...)

A thing I find intensely frustrating about the Solas Dragon Age debate (TM) is that there are two factions (Solas never did or thought anything morally questionable ever vs. Solas is just a Pride Demon and an irredeemable liar) who are constantly accusing each other of being naive or misunderstanding the character. Meanwhile both sides have the exact same approach to character analysis: Cherrypicking certain things Solas says and hailing them as "canon" while disregarding anything they deem contradictory as "well he was lying when he said that obviously".

Like... You're out here talking about how other people must not be media literate enough to understand, all while never (or only when it serves you) acknowledging that character development (in either direction) is a thing. Or that something a character says might depend on the context of who they are talking to or their mental state at the time. Or that other characters, whose opinions on Solas you take as canon, might have character flaws of their own that skew their reading of him.

You really are taking a multifaceted character and going "Well obviously this one facet is the correct reading and everyone else is stupid". That kind of argument might get you through a high school book report if you're literate enough to give one or two good examples. But as an actual, in-depth reading of a character, it's shallow and just... Boring. Why would you dig your heels in the sand about this? "No this character can't be interesting! You should disregard anything but these two examples of him following his worst (or best) instincts! That's how good character analysis works!"

I hope to God most of the writers of these posts are teenagers, but I know full well they're not.

God damn Dragon Age and their god damn beautiful scenery and their god damn heart wrenching tragic romance. I feel compelled to draw all the moments of dialogs that happen in my head but not in the game because I need more of these two ;_;

So what is Lavellan's favorite ice cream?

She'd never had ice cream before. Her clan had made syrup, boiled it down from tree sap that they'd tapped in late winter, when the sap started to rise again. They'd thrown the skimmings into the snow for the children to eat. It had been a special treat, when she had been small.

But here, at Madame de Fer's little soirée, she'd gotten to try some for the first time. And she'd seen how terribly effective food could be in the Game. It took a mage to do this, at this time of year, or access to one, and that was a symbol of status. The table glistened with glittering transparent lions, cast, not carved, of ice. She could see the lines where they had been unmolded. And delicate little glasses of all sorts of little frozen things.

She'd been trying to look like she wasn't completely out of her depth, in her armor and tabard, among everyone else in their fancy clothing, but she hadn't had anything better, and the Inquisition hadn't had the resources for anything more on such short notice. After they’d talked briefly, sized each other up like two predators circling each other before coming to a mutual understanding, Madame Vivienne had very graciously showed her how she was supposed to eat at an affair like this.

“Won’t you try the ice cream, my dear?” Vivienne said, handing her a small goblet and a delicate little spoon. “Rosewater, with salted pistachio and sugared rosepetal on top.”

And Vivienne took one herself and took a delicate spoonful, then looked at her encouragingly.

Her eyes had fluttered closed as she’d tried it.

Lightly sweet, rich and unctuous on the tongue, the faint aroma and flavor of rose, the salty crunch of the pistachio, the way that it coated the tongue as it slipped down, cool and refreshing. The rosepetal with a light vegetal crunch, the sugar crystals crunching under her teeth.

She opened her eyes, and Vivienne was looking at her with a faint smile. Not an unkind one, merely one that looked like she was remembering something from long ago.

“Did you like it, my dear?" Vivienne asked kindly. “Strictly speaking, it’s more of an iced custard than an iced cream. Terribly rich, but one of my favorites.”

She smiled back.

“It’s wonderful,” she said, taking another spoonful, '‘thank you.”

Vivienne took another spoonful of her own.

“No, my dear,” she said, “thank you for coming.”

(I think she'd like matcha ice cream or mint a lot also. All those herbal flavors.)

I don’t know why, but some people like to place Solas into a kind of emotional and ideological stasis where he never changes. But Solas is capable of change. It might feel slow and complicated, but we see it across the games.

I’ve talked before about how Solas goes from 'sorry, I’m going to have to destroy your world completely to save mine' to 'I’ve gathered spirits to help minimise the damage.' He admits it would still mean thousands of deaths, which is horrific, but it’s no longer the total annihilation he spoke about in Trespasser. So while it’s not perfect moral progression, it's still change.

And the topic of the Dalish shows change in him too.

Solas didn’t hate the Dalish because they weren’t ancient elves. His frustration was tied to grief, disorientation, and what happened when he first woke up.

“I tried to explain the truth to one clan. When I convinced them that I was truly Fen’Harel, they attacked me. After that, I hid my explanations behind the façade of having witnessed events in the Fade.”

As a fellow Solavellan in a server I'm in said so eloquently: “It’s interesting to consider his deception wasn’t born from a desire to deceive, but to protect himself.”

People can interpret Solas however they want, but context has to matter at some point. He wakes from uthenera traumatised. He’s lost his world, his people, and thousands of years of history because of him! He awakens into a Thedas where almost everything he knew has been distorted, forgotten, or exaggerated. Of course he struggles to connect to modern elves at first. That disconnect is part of the tragedy of his character.

But even on the Dalish, Solas changes. Yes, early on in DAI, Solas expresses a lot of anger towards the Dalish and considers himself apart.

Solas: I have wandered many roads in my time, and crossed paths with your people on more than one occasion. Inquisitor Lavellan: We are both of the same people, Solas. Solas: The Dalish I met felt... differently on the subject. OR Inquisitor: I hope Briala uses her position to help your people. Solas: How would helping Briala help… Oh, you mean elves! I’m sorry, I was confused. I do not consider myself to have much in common with the elves.”

Then later, in Veilguard, after helping rescue enslaved Dalish prisoners:

Solas: The Dalish prisoners escaped safely? Rook (elven): We got them away free and clear. Solas: Good. Your time with the Veil Jumpers probably taught you some of my history with our people. Whatever my frustrations with them, it was a privilege to be able to help our people again.

In DAI he distances himself from modern elves but his time in the Inquisition changes him - he tells Rook that despite himself, he grew fond of people in the Inquisition (maybe fell in love even). In VG, he includes himself with them: our people. And calling it a privilege carries genuine emotional meaning. He valued being able to save and protect them.

And when Rook asks him directly why he found the Dalish frustrating:

Solas: It is unfair to them. I lived for thousands of years, and after I imprisoned the Evanuris, I slept for thousands more. I awoke in a world that had forgotten the ancient times almost entirely. And those who tried to remember elven history, like the Dalish, had gotten so much wrong.”

Again, this frustration isn’t rooted in hatred or superiority. It’s rooted in waking up to find history he personally lived through distorted beyond recognition (to him). But even then, he still acknowledges their perspective:

There was truth to their stories. My rebellion had indeed disrupted the lives of those who had been comfortable. And when I created the Veil, I destroyed an empire. Their judgments were fair, if clouded.

Ok, so he's still being so Solas here, but in that, he's acknowledging their perspective and his role in creating the world they inherited. Solas is a character that reflects and has awareness.

I can’t engage with interpretations of Solas that flatten him into a completely static character with no capacity for growth or reconsideration. If people want to read him as a liar manipulating everyone 24/7, fine. If they want to keep him emotionally frozen in place forever, they are free to do so. My interest lies in engaging with the narrative arc the story presents, and that arc shows Solas changing, reassessing, softening in some areas, and struggling in others. He’s contradictory and paradoxical and capable of change.
