“[Name],” the boy beside you called out. He inched his body and position away from you slowly, no longer having his hand cup yours as it rested on the sand below you. “I’m sorry.”
In the cold, ceaselessly thickening wind that blew through the air, you knew that the atmosphere around you—and your relationship, subsequently—had begun to reflect the state of the soon rigid breeze around you and Gyuvin.
Throughout the past few months, it became an unspoken agreement between the both of you to find each other at the beach once dusk fell. It made you wonder if you’d gotten too comfortable around him, and it’d just been an hour into today’s visit to the coastline when he confirmed what you’d been worried about all summer. “I think we should stop doing this.”
“Stop coming to the beach?” Your brows knit together as if a thread had kept them stitched closely. It took a bit of inquisition on your part and some clarification on Gyuvin’s before you finally understood what he was trying to put a stop to. He wanted to stop meeting up here; rather, he wanted not to see you at all… or at least, for the rest of the time you were here. You had to go back to the city when summer ended, anyway.
You moved your arms to push your knees up into your chest as you attempted to process what he was saying. “I don’t get it,” you refused, shaking your head. “I thought you liked me.”
“I did,” Gyuvin meant to interject; he didn’t think fast enough to be able to interrupt you. “I still do.”
You swallowed. You weren’t exactly dating, but you thought your bond counted for something. As you pieced together a hopefully composed response, you couldn’t help but look around the shore and at everything except Gyuvin—the boy who had just unofficially broken up with you.
The surrounding area of land was deserted for a reason; Gyuvin’s grandfather owned a small portion of the beach, and therefore had it restricted. You were always allowed to come, though, as your families had been friends for a considerable amount of time before you were born. (Read: you were always allowed, but you’d never exercised that privilege until this summer.)
There was no one else around but you and him. You both knew you didn’t have any means to be able to find an excuse to leave or avoid this conversation; so, with a deep breath, you turned your head to the left and stared at Kim Gyuvin for the first time since he brought this entire thing up.
“Then why are you doing this?” You pulled your lips back from frowning—an obvious human reflex when upset. “I thought this was a good summer. It’s been you and me all summer, Gyuvin.”
“I know.” He sighed. “That’s the problem with…” He waved his hand, which had laid atop his knee a few seconds prior, inertly as he gestured to the space between the two of you. “This.”
Your lips parted an infinitesimal distance. Was he pertaining to how you wanted something to come out of this? Sure, you did want a real relationship with Gyuvin—something you’ve thought about the more you spent time with him—but you didn’t expect anything of him. You kept your friendship with him completely as that: friends. He’d never given the indication he wanted to be anything, so you never tried to be anything.
The task of maintaining your composure had become increasingly daunting as the discussion progressed. “What’s wrong with… this?” you asked cautiously, breathless as your tone laced with uncertainty.
Gyuvin visibly hesitated. He inhaled and exhaled deeply, presumably to prepare for what he was about to say to further the conversation. “Nothing,” he replied. “It’s just that it’s August now. You’re leaving in a few weeks, and I won’t see you until next summer again.”
“That has nothing to do with us,” you argued. You let your knees fall flat to the ground instead of hugged to your chest, and you pushed your palms down into the sand a couple inches behind your back to sustain an upright position. “Do you not wanna be friends anymore?”
He bit his lip. Just then, you noticed how tightly his right set of fingers had clung onto his left hand, continuously moving to massage how tensed up it was.
The breeze had come to an irreversible conclusion for the day. The salty undertone in the air became more apparent, and the winds weren’t shifting in degree of intensity as quickly as when you first observed them to.
You breathed it in. As you did so, Gyuvin moved back close to you again, no longer tending to his now reddened knuckles. You wondered what you could say next, but he beat you to it; after what looked like careful deliberation, he gathered the last of his courage for the night and finally initiated eye contact with you.
“I want to be more than friends,” he admitted. “I want this.”
You opened your mouth to speak, but Gyuvin stopped you by lifting the palm of his hand. “I want you, but you’re leaving. I know you’re starting university soon, and you might not come back to me anymore after this summer.
“You’ll be in the city and I’ll just— I’ll be here. I don’t think I’ll ever want to leave this beach, and I don’t think you’ll ever want to leave the city when you get back there,” he half-explained, half-rambled. You hated the way he phrased everything, and the way he implied you were; as though you would simply desert him after a whole summer of whatever this was. “Just— I want to put an end to this before I get hurt.”
You were getting Gyuvin; you were getting a verbal confirmation that whatever you wanted, he wanted too. Still, you felt a dramatic rumble in your chest and a sickening turn in your stomach at the sudden realisation—you wished he was wrong about you, but you couldn’t exactly assure him that he was.
Even you knew you had the tendency not to come back the following year, making his worries a completely possible outcome once you left. You couldn’t promise him anything even if you wanted to.
With your words, you treaded lightly. “I want this too,” you agreed. His face lit up briefly before he realised what you were gonna say next: a guilt-ridden, almost inaudible, “I’m sorry.”
Gyuvin, after a minute of biting his cheek, slowly nodded. “It’s okay,” he told you, lips pursed into a thin line. “I know you are.”
You gulped down and mentally went through everything that had led you to this moment. Maybe if you hadn’t pushed him for an explanation, you wouldn’t both be sat on the floor of the beach helplessly stuck in your own thoughts. It seemed like this was all your fault.
“I’m so sorry,” you apologized again. Gyuvin put his right arm over your shoulder and guided your head into his. “I know.”
With the left side of your face pressed up against Gyuvin’s shoulder bone, you felt the night come to an end. There was no one else around but you and him; unfortunately, you both knew that this would be the last time you’d come to the beach together, and that this exact spot would be left unfrequented for at least a year… even if you decided to come back next summer.

You never thought anything much of the red string bracelet your mother gave you on the day of your middle school graduation—just that it looked kind of stupid. Upon receiving it, at the unripe age of fourteen, you contemplated its purpose and why your mom couldn’t give you a shiny new Pandora charm bracelet as your friends’ parents did for them.
Nevertheless, as a relic of representation of your grandmother’s beliefs (as your dad had told you), it became difficult to take off… metaphorically. You couldn’t just disrespect a family member like that; especially one that had essentially raised you. So, the sort of odd-looking, entirely useless red string wrapped around your wrist had to stay just the way it was.
Over time, its significance, and the meaning of it, diminished in your point of view. No one in your family had taken the time to enlighten you on its real purpose, so in the end… what—who were you wearing it for?
“I think it’s cute,” your friend Eunah said one day. She had a stripe of frothed milk above her upper lip from drinking the cafe mocha she ordered, so it was hard to take her seriously. Still, it was clear what she was talking about; she slid the tip of her finger under the red string across your wrist, tugging on it slightly.
In the mid-afternoon of another unremarkable Saturday, you’d found yourselves at the nearest coffee shop to your building on campus. You had a lot of work to catch up on, and Eunah graciously offered to accompany you… but she ended up not much of a help. Additionally, she only got you wondering if you had a milk mustache identical to hers, seeing as you’d gotten the same drink.
“It’s alright,” you replied, letting out a deep breath as you continued writing with your free hand. “I’m thinking of taking it off one of these days.”
“Oh, come on,” your friend groaned. “It means something, you know,” she stated, tone almost defensive. Your best friend was big on myths, theories, and any kind of legend—she was probably about to regale you on another one, this time concerning the bracelet you wore daily. “Like, when you find your soulmate, the string will break—I’ve heard of it.”
You scoffed. “Yeah, okay.” You were never one to believe any of this, which is why you never did any of your own research regarding your red string. It’s stupid, and it looks stupid too.
“Fine. Don’t believe me then,” she said, amused and rolling her eyes. “Just… when it happens, at least tell me I was right. And that I told you so.” Eunah began to pack her things into her blue Herschel backpack, and with all your textbooks and notepads laid out on the table, you didn’t have the chance to notice that she…
She stood up, wearing her bag over both shoulders. “I’ll see you on Monday, [Name]. Text me when you leave later.”
“Mhm,” you passively hummed. “Text me when you get home.”
She nodded. “I will.” Then, she went out the door.
It’d been only a few minutes post-Eunah exit when you came to find that your advanced chem textbook was gone—just— poof. As if it hadn’t had a spot on the table earlier, as if someone had… oh. (As if someone had taken it.)
You dashed out of the cafe as quickly as you could, not minding the passers-by and their brief judgmental glances. You needed that book—your exam was on Monday. You couldn’t even begin to think about what you would do without it. And, sure, it wouldn’t have been the end of the world if you weren’t able to catch up to Eunah, but it was more convenient to chase after her now than to commute to her house or assign a delivery service to bring you your textbook.
It had just so happened when your friend came into view, you… tripped. Shit. At least your arms broke the fall.
You were so certain the palms of your hands were grazed and (a very tiny bit) bloodied—so much so that you concluded it would hurt to prop yourself up to stand. Luckily, although you didn’t know it at the time…
“You alright?” a stranger asked, extending help in the form of his hand reaching for yours.
Despite your better judgment, the first thing that came to your mind had unfortunately been: he’s really, really cute. And tall. He flashed you an awkward smile, which prompted you to wonder why until he shook his empty hand in front of you—a subtle reminder that you had yet to get up from the floor.
“Oh, oh—!” you gasped, taking his offer into grasp. (Not too tightly though. Your palm was still… bleeding.) Your eyes locked onto his wrist as he helped you back up, and it’s just then that you realized it: your red string bracelet is gone.
The boy laughed. “That was a hard fall,” he said, nearly giggling in… amusement at your misfortune. He had taken his hand back before you could even hope that your blood didn’t rub off on him. His smile dropped. “You’re bleeding.”
Your red string bracelet was gone.
Your red string bracelet was gone.
Your red string bracelet was... who even is this guy?
“Hello? Are you good?” He waved his hand ahead of your face.
“[Name],” he called out. How did he know your name? (Newsflash: it was on your ID.) “Are you good?”
With half your consciousness gone due to the sole premise of your bracelet disappearing, you’d lost the ability to lead any train of thought clearly. “What’s your name?” you semi-breathlessly inquired, tilting your head and raising a brow.
He pointed to himself and asked for clarification. With this gesture, you noticed that he wore the same ID lanyard as yours. “Me?”
“Yes.”
“Gunwook.” He smiled softly.
Could Eunah really have been right? You’d just met this guy, when—
“Gunwook, can I have your number?” ... Impulse took over the rationality in you.
He broke into the widest grin you’d ever seen. He let go of your hand, which you hadn’t remotely noticed he took ahold of again, and stared at you intently as he waited for you to open your phone. You didn’t have your phone on you.
With a shake of your head, he immediately understood and pulled a pen out of his pocket. “Got paper?”
That you did. Gunwook ripped it into two, gave you one, wrote his number down first, and then lent you his pen. He wanted your number too…
“Uh, here it is.” Passing the piece of paper back to him, you pursed your lips, and the corners of your mouth came up ever-so-slightly. “Thanks. I’ll, um, go now.”
You rushed away (briskly walking) from the echo of Gunwook’s voice, ringing out with the question: “Wait! How’s your hand?”
“Good!” you yelled back.
Fortunately, when you reached the cafe again, your belongings and coffee were left untouched. There, you fished out your phone from somewhere in your backpack and called Eunah right away, planning to open with the line: “You were right, and you told me so.”

As the sunlight peeked through the trees and poured through the classroom window, you found it relaxing, yet blinding. You were squinting, trying to see what was written on the board, but you could only vaguely make out the large letters written at the top—something about preparing for summer break.
You put a hand above your eyes, blocking the sun so you could write down as much as you could before the bell went off for lunch. You wrote down a mere five words before you heard the shrill ring, and began rushing to get as much done as you could.
With a sigh, you pulled out your phone, deciding to take a picture and write down the rest during lunch instead.
After picking up your things, you made your way into the crowded hallway, pushing past students and slowly making your way to the cafeteria. You had your own lunch so you just tucked yourself into a relatively empty corner of the room, pulling out your food and your notebook.
It wasn’t long before you heard the chattering voices begin to float closer, and a once empty table was now occupied by a friend group. You tried your best to ignore them and let the sounds of their voices blend with the rest of the noise of the cafeteria, but they were simply too close and too loud. You let out a sigh, feeling frustrated at the lack of work you were able to get done today.
You reached into your backpack, pulling out your headphones so that you could play your studying playlist, and just as you had popped one side into your left ear, you heard a certain familiar word. A name—your name.
Your head snapped up, and you looked at the group ahead of you, finding that a few of the boys sitting at the table in front of you were looking at you discreetly. They quickly looked away, eyes darting around as they tried to pretend they weren’t looking at all. What were they doing?
You noticed one boy in particular who was sitting at the end of the table, the perfect spot for you to see his side profile. His cheeks and ears were dusted pink, as he spoke rapidly to his friends. It was kind of cute, actually. You had never seen him like this. Park Gunwook was usually the type that looked so confident in everything he did. He was the cool guy.
For a moment, he glanced at you, looking panicked when he noticed that your gaze hadn’t shifted yet. You looked back down to your notebook, confused at the current events. Why were you the topic of their conversation?
You decided to leave out one of your headphones so that you could listen in, but they were talking quieter now. You felt so awkward and seen knowing that they were probably looking at you. This type of attention wasn’t something that you ever gravitated to. In fact, you tried to avoid it.
By the time you realized that you hadn’t gotten any more work done, you heard footsteps coming towards you, and then you saw someone in your peripherals. When you looked up, Gunwook was standing there, looking far less confident than he usually did.
The moment your gaze fell on him, he looked away awkwardly, and then pointed to the seat opposite to you. “Can I sit here?”
Startled at the question, your mouth fell open for a moment, but you then said, “go ahead.”
When he sat down, there was a a small awkward silence between the two of you, followed by some groans from his friends, one of them even face palming.
“I like your pen.” You saw him pointing to the pen in your hands, which had a cat on the top of it. “It’s cute.”
You pursed your lips, suddenly feeling embarrassed that he noticed the pen. You shifted it around in your fingers, glancing at him. “Thanks.”
Before another awkward silence could fall over the two of you, you spoke next. “I like your shoes.” You tapped the table with your pen. “They’re nice.”
“Thank you.” He said, startled. Somehow his face turned more red. “I- yeah, they’re new.” He nodded. “Anyway, I was thinking…”
You looked down at your notebook, holding back a smile at the way Gunwook was acting. It was strange, seeing someone who always looked to collected, now acting so flustered.
Gunwook put his hand on the back of his neck, dropping his head down as he refused to look you in the eye. “Did you… maybe… uh, hold on— how about— could we maybe—“
“Is he serious? All that pep talk for nothing?” You heard one of his friends murmur in the background.
“Do you want… to go out sometime?” Gunwook mumbled out.
Now, as you sat in front of the boy you’ve been secretly crushing on for months, you felt your heart skip a beat. Your mouth fell open in shock, and the loud cafeteria was no longer bothering you.
Gunwook looked more nervous as the seconds ticked by, hearing nothing but your silence, but before it became too late and he started to make an excuse, you rushed out a response. “I would love that.”
Now Gunwook’s expression was mirroring yours, before he broke out into a delighted smile, his cheeks still tinted red. “Okay.” He nodded, trying to lessen his smile and… is he trying to act cool? “Yeah, okay. Sounds good. Uh, could I get your number?”
You smiled, writing your number onto the bottom corner of the page in your notebook, and ripping it off to give to Gunwook. He took it from you, unable to get rid of his smile. “I’ll text you later than.” He stood up, his hands held behind his back like he didn’t know what to do with them.
“Okay.” I smiled feeling the same joy I saw in him.
When Gunwook returned to his table, some of his friends pat him on the back, and said some form of congratulations for not blowing it.
By the end of the day, you had received a message.

ricky 리키
RICKY HAS not once had a problem with picking you up in his car, despite not going to the same school. You’d always wondered how he found enough time and energy after classes to endure the twenty-kilometer, forty-five-minute drive from his school to yours, especially with how prevalent and severe the traffic was in the city you lived in.
You’ve repeatedly told him—borderline reprimanded—that he’s never had to do this, and that you can make the effort home all by yourself. Ricky’s always replied with a shrug and an excuse about how he likes doing this for you, even if your high schools were in completely opposite directions from the heart of the city.
As your class ends today, you fully expect him to be there, waiting in front of the gate in his wildly expensive bright red car (which used to embarrass you slightly when he pulled up, but you’ve gotten used to it) with a warm smile on his face and a drink in hand for you. Amongst the hurried footsteps of your peers, you manage to find a way past them and straight to the exit, eager to find your boyfriend’s familiar face in the crowd of other students dismissed the same time as you.
It might sound a little hypocritical of you, but even though you didn’t hold it to a standard of Ricky to pick you up everyday, it still made you feel happy inside whenever he did—which has been everyday since the new semester started.
Without fail, the moment you step outside the bounds of campus, your boyfriend is there waiting for you in the expensive bright red car you expected him to be in, with two strawberry lattes in his front seat cup holders visible through the window—one being intended for you.
He unlocks the door as you walk up, waiting for you to fasten your seatbelt and settle in before he shifts the gear stick to drive.
“How was your day?” he inquires, coming to a halt at the first stop light. He pulls the straw of your latte from its spot in the small compartment on the door panel, poking it through the wrapped paper and putting it into the drink for you.
You take a sip when he hands it to you, gulping down before replying. “Good, actually! My teacher was sick and didn’t show up, so I had an entire period to catch up on assignments,” you say. “What about you?”
“Good now that I’m with you,” he answers, shrugging. “My presentation didn’t really go so well, and I didn’t get much sleep last night.”
The school he attended was a notoriously strict, high-standard international school that was practically established to cater to company heirs and others alike—and Ricky was no exception to that. However, it meant that he was also held to a higher standard than most students the same age, and you knew that your schedule and school were more lax than his.
“Let’s get some sleep,” you suggest. He simply hums in agreement as the traffic light turns to green, putting his focus back on the road while accelerating.
You get to Ricky’s house not long after that, greeting his mom before making a beeline to his room. You both sneak under the covers of his bed, and take a minute to talk a bit more about each of your days before settling in fully.
Your boyfriend’s hesitation is palpable, and you’re sure it’s because he feels a little guilty for sleeping when you would usually spend time (awake) together after classes. But his eyelids are betraying him, and his eyes are shutting as the conversation pursues, so you resolve to let him know it’s alright.
“You can go to sleep, I’m okay,” you assure him. “I’ll wake you up later.”
Ricky nods. “Thanks a lot, [Name].” He sinks down into the mattress a bit more. “I love you.”
“Just get some sleep,” you quickly respond. “I love you too.”
You often wondered how your boyfriend always had the energy to pick you up everyday, and today you got your answer—he doesn’t. He’s just been able to find the energy because it was you, and now you know how lucky you are.
gyuvin 규빈
GYUVIN’S UNSURE when this arrangement between the two of you started. It was majorly unspoken, even from the beginning—after class, you would follow the languid crowd of students to the main gate, and you’d find him waiting by the potted camellia plant placed adjacent to the cement post near the opening of the school.
Then, you’d stop by the 7-Eleven around the corner for your fix of ice cream (if you felt like it; if not, the row of frozen yoghurt shops and local coffee pop-ups across were just as inviting). He would offer—no, insist on paying—and you would engage in a back-and-forth about how it shouldn’t be this way, that you should just let him pay, because, you know... he wants to.
And then it’s bittersweet—literally. For some reason, you always pick some kind of wack flavour that Gyuvin has no interest in. Today, it’s limited-edition Baskin Robins espresso-flavoured ice cream in a 4-ounce cup. You probe him to try at least half a spoonful of it, and he does, noting the bitter top note of the taste. He also notes that you let him use the same spoon you used just now, which somehow makes the ice cream come off a bit sweeter on his tongue.
Gyuvin doesn’t remember when all of this became a daily thing. You weren’t even classmates a year ago, much less friends; how did this... happen between you two?
You’ve begun your trek home, side-by-side (him nearer to the street, of course), when he realizes this all started because you live two blocks apart. What he still doesn’t know, though, is why you’ve both kept this routine up for so long.
Whatever. Gyuvin shakes off the thought with a literal shake of the head, tuning back in to what you were saying. He divides the focus of his gaze between you and the path ahead.
“... I suck at the sciences, and, you know, Park Gunwook, all-knowing science genius is always out to get my top 1 spot in class. I’m so—” You groan. “Frustrated!”
He chuckles. “I’ll sabotage him for you.”
“Oh, sure you would. You’d sabotage your best friend’s grades for some classmate.” Rolling your eyes, the notion almost makes you laugh. Gyuvin’s cute when he jokes like this; he always says he’d do all kinds of things for you, and it’s clearly an exaggeration, but it also makes you insanely giddy to believe that he could really mean what he says for a second.
You lick the mini wooden spoon in your hand clean of any remaining melted ice cream. “I hope you don’t tell Gunwook any of this, by the way. I kind of need him to tutor me in physics,” you not-so-sheepishly add, nudging Gyuvin’s arm with your elbow.
“Yeah, he won’t hear anything from me. My loyalty lies with you only,” he jokes.
“I’d hoped so,” you reply.
Then, as per usual, the rest of the walk is silent—with many mumbled warnings from him whenever you cross the road. He’s made it a point to notify you of oncoming vehicles or any potential hazards (like a puddle you can slip in or an obstacle you might trip on). You’ve observed he’s always had that habit, and even though you’re well aware of the ground you walk on yourself, you don’t mind it too much; it just means that he cares for your safety.
Gyuvin’s house is short two blocks in the journey to and fro the school compared to yours, meaning your house is farther away and further behind his. Still, since the first time he walked you home, he’s never complained of the extra steps he takes past his house on the way to yours and the ones he takes back to his after he’s dropped you off.
Today is just like any other day. You arrive at your doorstep, and he hands you the backpack he decided to carry for you halfway into the trip home.
You sling a strap over one shoulder before looking up at him again. “Same time tomorrow?”
Gyuvin nods, a small smile on his face as he affirms your statement. “Same time tomorrow.”
He waits for you to close the door after stepping inside, and then he pivots his heel ninety degrees back towards his house. He’s sure it’s only him, and it must all be in his head, but the air between you has shifted. He might even know why he still chooses to walk you home after all this time.
gunwook 건욱
GUNWOOK AND your favourite time of day is the period just before dusk, when you’ve finished studying together for the afternoon and head up to the—more often than not—restricted rooftop of your school building.
You’re aware that your boyfriend can get in trouble (and perhaps lose his status as class rep) by sneaking up to a blocked-off area of the school, so these visits have become a lot less frequent over the past few months; despite this, you’ve viewed the rooftop as one of your favorite places even though you’ve only been there with Gunwook, and not as frequently as you did before.
To you, whenever you were up there with the boy you loved and held so dearly to your heart, time seemed to slow—you’d take your places on the floor, knees close to your chests as you stared up at the sky, awaiting the sunset and subsequent dusk to fall on you both.
There have been some days that have served as exceptions to the rooftop being exclusively your and Gunwook’s spot, though, like when you feel the desire to be there yourself on the occasion your boyfriend can’t join you due to a prior engagement—a day like today.
The rooftop offered a view of the Seoul skyline, with your school being established strategically near the middle of the city. The breeze was colder in higher places, and it ruffled your hair as it blew past you.
Gunwook assured you that he’d meet with you after he finished something up for the incoming school festival. You admired your boyfriend for being so hardworking and kind towards everyone, even when you and he both knew he felt pressured most of the time.
And at this moment in time—the rooftop doesn’t feel as special to you alone in comparison to when Gunwook is here to accompany you. The view is still breathtaking, and the winds hitting your face are refreshing, but time isn’t slowing down for you like it does when you’re with him. This is your spot together, after all.
A tap on your shoulder wakes you straight out of your thoughts, and you turn to see a smiley Gunwook preparing to sit down beside you on the floor. When he has, he inches closer to you so you can lie your head on his shoulder the way he knows you want to. Then, the motion of your hands finding each other is almost automatic; he begins to stroke the back of your hand in circular movements with his thumb.
“So, how long have you been up here, huh?” your boyfriend teases, flashing his gummy smile and earning a light chuckle from you. “Since you left me to go do your student council thing,” you respond, scoffing.
Gunwook laughs. “Hey, I think you’ll enjoy the school festival when it happens. We even got that bungeoppang seller outside that you like so much to come in,” he tells you, “I just have one thing to do on festival day—and then, after that, I’m free and we can sneak off up here.”
“What do you have to do on festival day?” you ask.
The boy next to you giggles, knowing that what’s about to come out of his mouth is too cheesy for how long you’ve been dating (which was about to be three years soon). “Take a picture with my [Name], of course.”
You can’t even begin to digest that overly exaggerated sweet statement, and you rip your hand away from Gunwook’s jokingly. “You’re so...” You shake your head in feigned disapproval. “Cheesy.”
“I am, but it’s only for you,” he says, beaming.
“Yeah, yeah, okay,” you brush it off, lips curving into an upward crescent. “If other people knew you said this kind of stuff to me, they’d never see you the same way again.”
Gunwook rolls his eyes, now throwing his arm over your shoulder. “I’m lucky it’s just us here then.”

YUJIN’S BEEN athletically inclined since elementary school, and you’d be lying to say you weren’t envious of him sometimes. With training and his becoming popular overnight when the first semester of tenth grade started, though, it’s undeniable that he’s been perpetually busy.
So, whenever your long-time best friend does get the time to spend with you, you make the most out of it and do something memorable together; however, you could never really tell when his high school varsity coach would schedule a last-minute training session and ruin your plans.
Today is... unfortunately one of those days. You’d taken a bit of time to plan a hang out consisting of a late afternoon stroll through the park, then dinner at a restaurant you stumbled upon recently Yujin hadn’t tried yet but served his favourite food. You knew this was all in vain, though, when just as the bell rang, you found him at the foot of your classroom door, holding a drink from the vending machine as an “I’m sorry” gift to express his regret (and guilt).
He grins an awkward, strained grin when you make eye contact. “[Name], I know you had something planned out today, but—”
“It’s okay, Yujin. We can do it another time,” you say, taking his hand in yours and starting to walk away from the door.
“Really?” he questions. “I hate doing this to you, and I’d spend all my time with you if l could, because, you know, you’re...” he pauses, visibly deliberating what to say, “you’re my best friend, and I don’t want to make you feel like our friendship is one-sided because it’s not, I don’t want it to be, and we’ve been friends since middle—”
Due to the frequency of this kind of thing happening, you’ve grown accustomed to it. The first few times your best friend bailed on you, you felt hurt (and maybe upset), but it’s happened enough times now that it doesn’t faze you anymore.
You stop in your tracks, facing Yujin. “It’s really okay,” you repeat, dropping his hand. You understand that he has his own obligations, and you could take no other course of action than to give way; moreover, you’d known for a while that since approaching high school, your friendship would be different. Things were bound to change, anyway.
He winces. “Are you sure?”
“I am,” you answer. “I’ll wait for you.”
“Okay.”
You decide to spend the two hours Yujin’s at practice to finish all your due assignments—but it’s hard to devote yourself entirely to organic chemistry when all you can do is think of him. You’d liked your best friend since the summer of ninth grade.. and you’re in eleventh now. Evidently, you’ve never told anyone, much less Yujin himself, and it’s starting to take a toll on you... and so does simply thinking about it. So, to avoid giving your feelings any more thought than you already have, you put down the black Muji pen you’ve been using to revise your notes and surrender to sleep.
When Yujin finds you, your eyelids are closed and you’re lying down on your left arm, head turned to the right. The homework he presumes you were trying to do is sprawled out across the table messily, but your pen still has a place in your hand. He wonders how long you’ve been asleep, mimicking your position this time facing you. Not long after, he falls asleep staring at you.
When you wake up, your eyes feel like they’ve been glued shut. You can’t flutter them open as easily as you usually can, and even when you do, your vision is clouded and hazy. Still, you can make out the sleeping Yujin resting his head on his forearms and facing you—sure, your eyelids had a hard time fluttering, but your heart didn’t (as cliché as that sounds). Sitting up, you click your phone on and discover that it’s an hour past the time he finished practice. He must’ve fallen asleep waiting for you to wake up; you fell asleep waiting for him.
You know you should probably wake him up, but you can’t help it and rest your head back down onto the table anyway. He looks really... calm this way; it’s nice. Your gaze flickers from one facial feature of his to another, then another, and so on. And then, suddenly, you remember why you’ve liked him for this long.
Yujin slowly wakes up, rubbing his eyes and running a hand through his hair as he does. The second he becomes aware that you’re awake too, he jolts up.
“Come on, [Nickname]. Let’s go get dinner,” he invites.
You’re packing your things into your backpack when Yujin, who is standing awkwardly off to the side, interrupts. “I’ll skip practice next time—I’m sorry.”

↳ warnings: jiwoong is drunk in his, reader is a little insecure in gunwooks ?? they r slightly adjusted for context 😭
↳ note: i dont talk to any of the men who have sent me these texts anymore because MEN AINT SHIT!! 🗣️🗣️ this was also a little pain inducing for me to write bc i had to dig through the deep depths of my memories of situationships (dont worry i have a sense of dignity now 😝)
↳ warnings: lowercase intended, these r a lot longer than blurbs LMFAO, implied situationship at the beginning of jiwoong's?? mentions of drinking in zhang hao's, gunwook's is short sawry :(
↳ note: these r so fun i want to do a part 2 of just them as other taylor swift songs. taerae and hao's are my personal favs they are literally so cute i will die.

― KIM JIWOONG.
↳ now playing: style by taylor swift.
jiwoong finds himself slowing his pace as your house gets closer into his view. the light thuds on the concrete pavement are the only sounds that are heard at this time of night in your neighbourhood, but it evokes a sense of comfort.
in hopes of distracting you from his slowing pace, he reaches out to thread your fingers into his. when he hears the hitch of your breath, he smiles- suddenly the thoughts of parting for the night turn into an overwhelming amount of admiration towards you.
despite never disclosing your relationship, it is clear that the two of you are very into each other. however, that didn’t stop the heavy question from lingering on your lips every time you see him.
(more under the cut!)
sure the silence was nice, but your overwhelming thoughts consume you and a question seems to sprout out unprovoked.
“jiwoong, i’m not the only one you’re seeing, aren’t i?”
of course, you couldn't blame anyone for also take interest in him either, he was attractive, dreamy and kind.
jiwoong seems to freeze for a moment, his grip on your hand loosening while the rest of his body tenses in reaction; quite the juxtaposition, but it showed that even in the most compromising situations, he chose to be delicate with you.
"yn, i-" when the sound of his wavering voice fills your ears, you instantly back down.
the last thing you wanted was to make him uncomfortable and lose him altogether, "sorry it's just- i'm so tired of this cat and mouse game-"
"yn." this time, his tone was quite the opposite of what it had been before. that was one thing you admired about him; the way he picked himself back up so easily.
you look at him with furrowed brows, your rambling voice slowly fading out as yours eyes meet his. "i'm the one who should be sorry... i may have been seeing other people but trust me- none of them compare to how much i feel for you."
watching as your lips part in surprise, a warm smile makes its way onto his lips before he continues, "you are worth more than i think i could ever give to you- but if you will have me, i'll try my hardest to give you everything you deserve."
"jiwoong, you have given me everything i have ever wanted and more."
― ZHANG HAO.
↳ now playing: you are in love by taylor swift.
it wasn't like mieun meant to do it of course- she was hammered; but even with that in mind, you couldn't help but be pissed. your clothes were now drenched in her concoction of drinks and spots were starting to dry, causing bits of your shirt to stick to your skin. thankfully, while you were patting your shirt with a wet paper towel, hanbin came over to offer to look after her while you either went home or found a change of clothes.
spoiler alert- you ended up doing both of those things.
however, the last thing you expected was to see your best friend zhang hao at the party as well- also as a designated sober friend. he watched the interaction from afar: your figure in distress as you try to find a way to either get home or get out of these clothes.
"yn!", he calls from over the music, and your head immediately turns in his direction. he gestures to you to follow him and you oblige.
"wait in the bathroom, i'll grab you the spare clothes i have in my car", he then opens the bathroom door for you and gives you a reassuring smile, before shutting it as you walk in.
after what felt like forever, a gentle knock sounds throughout the bathroom.
"it's me, i'll just leave the clothes hanging on the doorknob alright?"
you let out a small 'okay', before opening the door just a crack and reaching for the bag hung around the door knob and shutting it once again once it was in your grasp.
fortunately for you, the liquid had not gotten onto your jeans so you just had to change into his shirt. disgustedly stripping off your shirt, you turn on the sink and wash off any alcohol that had stuck to your skin and when you finally put on zhang hao's shirt- a whiff of his cologne wafts into your nose.
fighting off the blush that threatened to creep up on your cheeks, you take the leftover fabric from the shirt that draped just past your mid-thigh and tie it into a thick knot before leaving the bathroom altogether.
you hadn't expected zhang hao to just be a few inches from the bathroom waiting patiently for your return, but there he was, and his eyes lit up at the sight of you.
"you ready to get out of here?" he asks, silently basking in the sight of you in his shirt.
"but what about mieun?"
"hanbin's already taking her home."
to say the ride home was filled with conversation would be a big fat lie. it was quite silent, zhang hao's radio was turned down to almost a whisper. although you were itching to say something, you couldn't find anything to talk about and it seemed like zhang hao was very comfortable in the silence. did you only see him as a best friend? does someone who only sees someone as a best friend find it hard to find something to converse about with them? all the more, blush when they give you their shirt to help you out?
"zhang hao.." you started, but you couldn't seem to find words to let you finish.
after a few seconds following your failed attempt at conversation, zhang hao smiles gently before glancing at you briefly, "you're my best friend."
tilting your head at the cryptic statement, you want to inquire before he beats you to it, "but i'm in love with you. like truly in love."
licking your lips, your eyes never leave his figure. his eyes stick to the road, but you can tell he meant it- you could sense how he itched to look back at you, "i think i'm in love with you too..."
― SUNG HANBIN.
↳ now playing: call it what you want by taylor swift.
hanbin has made it very clear that he would do anything for you and more. if he had the ability to give you the world he'd also find a way to gift you the moon as well.
for example, when earlier today you had told him you were craving stir fried spicy pork- now he had just texted you that he was on his way with spicy pork and your favourite dessert.
when he arrived at your door with the biggest grin, both the stir fried pork and dessert in his arms, he quickly sets them down to replace them with you. the embrace was quick but full of every feeling that bubbled within him everytime he saw you.
when you lean in to peck him on his cheeks, his eyes catch a gold necklace with a heart pendant dangling from your neck. obliging to your kiss, he smiles before his hands move to rub the heart between his fingers.
you quickly blush- you hadn't expected him to notice the new necklace so quickly.
"what's this?", he asks, before a carving on the back of the heart scratches at his finger tips.
he flips it over to find his initials engraved on the back side of the heart- a big goofy grin finds its way onto his lips and you can't help but focus on each and every feature of his face as he reacts.
"you bought a necklace with my initials engraved onto it?"
"yeah... not in a weird possesive way or anything i just... the way you love me is the most precious thing in my life and i never want to forget what- or rather who makes it so precious in the first place..."
"we better get me one of your initials too then."
― SEOK MATTHEW.
↳ now playing paper rings by taylor swift.
matthew liked you. like really really liked you. he found it so unbelievable that you held the same emotions for him, but you did- and god did you know how to make it known.
you were on the same boat, matthew has always been the sweetest, most patient and understanding person you had ever met.
the night he had confessed to you while rewatching a romcom for the 13th time in a row had made it’s way into your “favourite memories” folder in your head.
he was everything you could ever ask for and more- everything he did for you was so much even if it was just buying you your favourite snacks.
before you even considered your feelings for matthew, you considered yourself as someone who wasn’t exactly the most romantic- but when you were around him it’s like a switch flipped.
even if you adored the thought of the idea of a beautiful crystal sitting in the middle of your wedding ring, one which glistened beautifully when the light hit no matter the angle, even if matthew proposed with a ring made of newspaper- you’d accept it in a heartbeat.
“what you thinkin’ about?” he drawls, nudging you by the shoulder as he left no space between the two of you on the couch.
“mm.. js’ really love you.” you smile, glacing at him with adoration.
his eyes crinkle as he smiles and he grabs your arms and pulls you closer to him- if even possible.
“i think the world of you.” he replies, hands resting on your thighs as you were now straddling his waist. you knew that even if that engagement ring was made of newspaper, matthew’s neverending fondness for you would make up for it.
― KIM TAERAE.
↳ now playing: fearless by taylor swift.
as much as you felt bad for leaving your coworker's wedding, it was getting boring and you weren't about to waste the 150 dollars you spent on a nice outfit just to sit and clap while others danced.
thus leading you to be drive down the dark streets in taerae’s car with the radio on blast. the late summer rain started pouring, but taerae's windshield wipers found it easy to wipe away any droplets of rain from the windshield.
lovers wasn't the right word to describe your relationship with taerae- it more of you having a crush and not knowing if he felt the same. way he looked in a button down, his blazer discarded in the backseat, and his sleeves folded up to his elbows.
he hums along to the song while you simply stare, he looked so good right now- that wasn't exactly what someone should be thinking about they're best friend, right?
"the rain's starting to pour really hard, how about we park at the 711?", his suggestion immediately snaps you away from your stupor and you find his eyes glancing back and forth between you and the road.
"uh- yeah... that's fine."
when taerae pulls into the parking lot, he cranks the radio even louder and you look at his with a raised brow, "c'mon!"
widening your eyes at the sight of him opening his door to make way for the pouring rain, he steps out and kneels to make eye contact with you, his gaze expecting you to do the same.
"what?!"
"we didn't leave the wedding just to not have any fun, c'mon!" you bite your lip in contemplation at his reasoning- surely it was a good argument.
nodding to yourself, you open your door and try not to flinch at the feeling of the rain starting to soak your well done hair.
taerae quickly makes his way you your side of the car, keeping the door of the passenger side slightly agape to hear the blasting radio better.
once he turns back to you, you swear you had tunnel vision- his hair was slicked back by his own doing as the rain soaked it and so was his button-down.
he takes hold of one of your hands and raises it above your head, twisting it to help you spin- the sudden action makes you grin.
then he grabs onto both of your hands and starts to dance, relishing in the way the music echoed throughout the desolate gas station parking lot.
"taerae! my clothes were 150 dollars, i don't know if playing in the rain would make the price worth it", you say between giggles. even as you said it, you complied with his dancing.
he tilts his head in amusement, watching as you too enjoyed the moment albeit the comments that were meant to bring the two of you back to reality, "alright then, if we get it dry cleaned and i take you out to dinner, will it be worth the price then?"
he pulls you close, the two of you stopping in your tracks and a burst of confidence surges through your veins, "yeah... it'll be worth every moment i spent thinking about you too."
― SHEN RICKY.
↳ now playing gorgeous by taylor swift.
your relationship with ricky was simply that there wasn't one. sure you were acquaintances as you know each other through mutual friends and those mutual friends hang out a lot, but you just can't seem to talk to him.
grudgingly, you'll admit that you don't talk to him because you hate the butterflies he gives you from simply looking at you, or the fact that you swear you would melt into a puddle if he smiled at you.
however, for ricky, he enjoyed how painfully obvious your ignoring of his existence was. sure, he found himself smirking at himself at the thought of you unable to even maintain eye contact with him when he asked you a question, but had he ever found out why? the answer was no.
maybe it was because of the rumour that you truly did have a boyfriend? perhaps the rumour had been true and you were simply just avoiding him because your boyfriend had asked you to. or it was something completely unrelated to even having a boyfriend at all and you just had some problem with him that he was unaware of.
he settled on the former- he didn't want to suffer through a headache due to mindless thinking.
however, his observation was clearly proven wrong when he finds himself left alone in a room with you after both of your guys' friends went to the convenience store without you two knowing.
the silence was awkward, ricky watched as you fidgeted with your fingers and absolutely avoided even looking in his general direction.
"why won't you look at me? or talk to me? we've known each other for 2 months now..."
you purse your lips and finally find the courage to meet his eyes, you quickly regret that decision as you find it hard to look away.
"i'm not good with talking to people..."
"such a cop-out answer", he chuckles, his smile only making your heart race faster than it already was.
"do you have a boyfriend?" the casualty of his question catches you off guard and you part your lips in surprise, an obnoxious questioning sound coming from your lips.
"what made you think that?!" you finally manage to sputter out an answer, and ricky gives you an entertained smirk- you feel like you will melt in your spot if he keeps it up.
"so you aren't avoiding me because you have a boyfriend?"
"what kind of nonsense is that? i'm avoiding you because you're really cute and i hate that just by looking at me i find myself unable to process anything!"
a few seconds of silence overlaps the two of you before you snap your mouth open in distress, "shit..."
"hey, don't stress, we can take this slow. at least now i know why you were avoiding me."
"take things slow..?"
"you didn't think i'd care about you ignoring me if i wasn't an ounce interested in you, did you?"
― KIM GYUVIN.
↳ now playing: cruel summer by taylor swift.
you were in quite the predicament. kim gyuvin was your brothers best friend, not someone you could have a crush on. you two were friends, not close of course; only usually talking when your brother was around. after all, it would be quite weird to hang out alone- at least in your opinion.
in all fairness, you hated your relationship with him. you hated keeping secrets from him just to keep him around. sure, it was selfish to wish for more, if you told him you liked him and it didn't turn out well, your brother may end up losing his best friend too.
however, you were in much luck. your brother along with gyuvin had just graduated. you once had overheard the two talking about moving out together and going to a school the next city away.
summer was dawning in, the rain started to leave and your mind turned it gears with careful cogs. now was the perfect time to confess- if he rejected you, your relationship would not weigh in on his and your brothers', if he said yes- well, you hadn't really thought about it.
either way, either ending satisfied you. you didn't expect much from it, really- but the thought of having a chance to keep him around filled your being with much hope.
it was at least 1 hour past midnight. you went down to grab a small midnight snack, the weight of seeing gyuvin in the living room with your brother free from your chest after hearing the snores coming from your siblings' room just down the hall.
as you turn from the stairs to face the kitchen, you find a tall brunette sitting at the kitchen island, eyes already on your figure.
"oh-"
"hey", his smile was gentle, his voice was laced in fatigue but he didn't seem to want to move in his spot, almost waiting for something- or someone?
"sorry, i thought you were asleep. i heard snoring..."
"oh, your brother fell asleep five minutes into the movie, i couldn't stand his snoring so i brought him up to his room", he chuckled, you find yourself smiling at the sound.
you walk towards your stove, feeling a little intimidated as his gaze does not leave your body.
"you happy you graduated?" you ask, your back turned towards him as you set a pot of water onto the stove.
"hm, bittersweet feelings."
"why's that?" you furrow a brow, staring at the water in the pot, praying it would boil faster.
"js' wish i had done somethings while i was still in highschool... 'dunno"
you only hum, the thought of confessing digging itself to the top of your brain. was now a good time?
"yn?" you blink, turning you head in his direction. had you been in a trance for an embarrassing amount of time?
"think you could make me a pack too?" he gestures towards the singular pack of ramen sitting atop the counter. you tense for a moment before complying, turning to the pantry to retrieve another pack.
by the time you make your way back in front of the pot, the water is already boiling. you open both packets, dumping the noodles in and pulling the flavour packets out. turning the heat to medium, you still refuse to turn your body back towards gyuvin in fear.
now. right now is the best time.
"you thought about the university you want to go to once you graduate-"
"gyuvin i like you... it's bad."
taking his silence as a definite no, you try to blink away the tears the surface, eyes burning into the noodles that slowly softened in the water.
you think that he's found his escape, quietly going up the stairs while your back is still turned but you find your observation wrong. a gentle hand wraps around your wrist and beckons you to look at the culprit.
when you turn, you expect to find gyuvin looking at you with sincere apology. instead, you find a coy smile on his lips.
"what's so bad about that?" you look at his eyes in exasperation, searching for evidence of a joke- was he teasing you right now?
"you're my brothers best friend! not to mention you're moving away!"
"would you believe me if i told you that your brother knew about my crush on you?"
"what?!" gyuvin snickers before putting a finger to his lips, sure you were being adorable- but too loud at 1am.
he turns to turn the heat on the stove off before looking at you again, "and we've decided we're not moving... we both didn't get in so we're staying here to go to uni."
letting out a breath of relief, you still shook in your spot, "so you don't think it's weird that you're best friends with my brother and i'm his sister who has feelings for you?"
"what, is there some love handbook i don't know about?"
you can't help the light-hearted laugh that erupts from your throat at his sarcasm, "no... i guess there isn't."
"good, because not telling you i liked you before i graduated was my one and only regret..."
― PARK GUNWOOK.
↳ now playing: message in a bottle by taylor swift.
park gunwook was an admirable classmate of yours. he was bound to have admirers, he was class prez after all. his ranks were good and he is attractive- no denying that.
what is embarrasing however, is how you found yourself as one of those admirers.
it started off with simple notes of motivation. you only signed with an anagram. then, it turned into small gifts from the school store.
you revelled in the way he surveyed the room after each time he read a note from you, or the way he would ask his friends if the had seen someone set something on his desk.
however, you were diligent with being sneaky. you would only set something on his desk when the hallway and classroom were clear- it was usually during lunch or, if you got to the school too early, you would do it then.
what you weren't diligent with though, was estimating his intelligence.
arriving at the school late today, you rush into the classroom, praying that teacher was also running late. to your misfortune- he was not.
you stops you at the door, publicly announcing your arrival, making your rushed morning even worse before handing you a detention slip and dismissing you to your desk.
you set your bag down beside the desk chair and when you look up, a light pink sticky note tabbed to your desk catches your eye.
you frown before sitting down, grabbing the sticky note and fumbling to read it.
"thanks for the gifts yn- or should i say, my secret admirer. want to go to the convenience store with my at lunch? - p. gunwook" it read.
in surprise, you perk your head up and immediatley jerk your head into his direction. he was already looking back at you, a bashful smile on his face accompanied by a shy tilt of his head.
a goofy smile breaks through it restraints before you could stop it and you nod- suddenly your morning wasn't too bad.
― HAN YUJIN.
↳ now playing: enchanted by taylor swift.
han yujin did not think that the last thing that would be engraved in his mind after gunwook’s birthday party would be you.
you were gunwook’s childhood friend- sure he’d mentioned you every once in a while, but yujin had never truly met you.
he was glad that gunwook’s birthday party gave him that chance.
you were absolutely captivating- the way you looked in your formal yet casual attire, the way you lit up around the people you were close to, and the kindness you spread to everyone even if you didn’t know them.
yujin actually had the chance to talk to you, probably the main reason you had been lingering in his mind since he had left the gathering.
gunwook had pulled you over to finally introduce you to his friends. when you introduced yourself, he found out that you were actually from around here, just attending a different school.
the two of you actually hit it off pretty well, while gunwook and gyuvin were goofing on the dance floor, yujin and you just decided to sit and watch.
as he grew to know more about you; your school life, your friends, you rank in class, your hobbies and more, he couldn’t help the pit that grew in his stomach.
with everything that you do, you were bound to have someone interested in you- or have your interest lying on someone else, right?
little did yujin know that you were thinking just the same. it would be impossible to imply that yujin has never had an encounter with an admirer, let alone have his eye on someone.
when you two parted ways at the party, the longing to see eachother again had already started to set in. after a few bittersweet goodbyes, you two got into seperate cars and headed home.
as if the world heard both of your prayers, the next week, yujin was invited to hangout with gunwook and a few other friends- he could only hope that by “a few other friends” you would make an appearance.
and you did.
the way your eyes lit up at the sight of him gave him his answer. the only person you had been waiting for was him.
