This right here. I think this was the cruelest line. It was very Dean, just venting his anger and hurt without a filter, and I think it was completely within character. Dean internalizes until he explodes, and there’s always collateral damage among those he loves. That’s why he talks about “saying some stuff that’s knocked you back on your heels” because he knows he does this to Sam and Castiel. It’s how he reacts to being hurt and afraid; he lashes out. He cares more than anyone else that his war buddy is broken. But Castiel has contributed to Dean’s hurt and fear, and he can’t help throwing it back at him. These are really the times that I think about Daddy Winchester, because that’s probably exactly how he acted with Dean, especially as the boy got older. A hunt goes badly, and he is afraid and so he lashes out at Dean. “Nobody cares that you’re hurt, Dean! There’s no excuse for screwing up! You almost got yourself killed!” I can see that. It doesn’t mean he didn’t love his son, or that Dean doesn’t love his friend, but it’s just another example of these men never having learned to communicate their negative emotions.
