Week three, short breakdown of twitter going public
Hope where you least expect it.
#dodd2 My friends and I constantly argue about the state of the internet and whether it is getting us as a society into trouble or if it is moving civilization forward. They argue that there are such negative topics covered all over the news and on their websites and even social networking sites like Facebook are bogged down with users petty squabbles. However to my friends I say that there is hope and I do love to point out this example that I found while redditing really opened my eyes to what the internet could become. As an avid Redditor I have come into virtual contact with hundreds of do-gooder stories. Some of these are as little as gifting a fellow user "Reddit Gold." And others are as large scale events such as the case of Omari, the man from Africa. The African man, Omari, caught a machete to the head while trying to protect an orphanage. The post called for action to raise $2000 in order to finish building the walls in order to protect the children and the orphanage. As soon as people realized this was not just a ploy to swindle people out of their hard earned money, but rather a noble cause to help fellow human beings in their time of need. After this story was upvoted to the front page where millions of redditors could read the story, thousands of people pledged money to help the orphanage and over $65,000 was raised. http://tinyurl.com/ojmn58j This is one of the examples of how the internet and Internet communities can solve seemly impossible tasks. People all over the world came together in order to donate to help Omari and the African orphanage get its roots firmly planted in the ground in order to ward off future encounters which in the past have been so grim.
